In the past we (my wife and I)have often not made any bookings in advance when touring Europe, and indeed the task of doing so was, more often than not, a tedious and long-winded business. However, on planning a trip to northern Spain in the high summer season in 2012 it seemed foolish not to do so and fortunately we discovered Booking.com.

The accommodation for the entire trip, which entailed seven different venues, was accomplished in just a few hours, despite being rather fussy as to exactly where we preferred to stay and taking full advantage of the wide spread of choices available.

The map facility is absolutely brilliant when looking for a choice of accommodation in a specific area and could not be easier to use.

Also having settled for one night in a place where we really wanted to stay two nights, (due to it being nearly booked out), and then having regretted the decision; the 'no-fee' cancellation, confirmed by e-mail very quickly was very much appreciated.

The fact that you can select accommodation, book it and print out a confirmation immediately is a boon. Indeed, it almost makes shopping around a pleasure. On top of this, when making multiple bookings, the fact that the web-site remembers your details is another bonus.

As a regular user of the web to book airline tickets, hire cars and accommodation it is in my opinion hard to imagine a web-site being more user friendly. The sheer speed and ease of reviewing multiple choices, and the amount of information available (should you need it)is quite astonishing.

Booking.com must surely be heartily congratulated for doing such a good job. Perhaps I should add that I have travelled extensively on both business and pleasure for over forty years so am not easily impressed.
Indeed, staying in modern and/or four and five star hotels on business is, quite frankly, a bit of a bore so searching for places with more character has,in the past, been quite a chore. Hence my opening remarks.
