“Whirlwind tour of Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, and Oxford”

★★★★☆

written by on 15/12/2014

My December tour started with a courtesy pickup to Victoria bus station. I booked the Select tour, so I paid the tour guide for attraction admissions on the bus. From there, we set out first to Windsor Castle where we stayed for about 2 hours. This actually includes waiting in the queue unless you have a London Pass. 2 hours is not nearly enough time to do Windsor Castle justice, especially if you also watch the Changing the Guard ceremony. Factoring all of the above, we only had a little over an hour inside the castle itself, of which about 30 minutes was for the Changing the Guard. The timing is good to watch the ceremony, but be sure to check the schedule before booking your tour. There are also fewer crowds here vs Buckingham Palace, so you're more likely to actually be able to see what's going on. The Castle itself is magnificent and definitely worth spending 2-3 full hours inside. If you're staying in London for 6 days, you can get the 6 or 10 Day London Pass and use it to bypass the queue and get free admission (a <6-Day London Pass is poor value, especially if you're going to spend a day on this tour). After Windsor Castle, we headed to Stonehenge. There's no lunch stop, so be sure to bring/buy a cold lunch (eg. sandwich) with you to eat on board. We stayed at Stonehenge for 1.5 hours, which I found to be just about appropriate. You can pay for the audio tour, but the stones themselves are now fenced off about 20-50 metres or so away. It was also very windy. After Stonehenge, we headed to Oxford. As it was December, it was already after sunset by the time we arrived. Our tour guide gave us a walking tour, followed by some free time. We stayed in Oxford also for about 1.5 hours before heading back to London. Overall, I enjoyed the tour. I would have preferred more time at Windsor Castle, perhaps paring back the Stonehenge and Oxford time just a bit. It's a lot of time on the bus, but it's a quick way to say you've been to all these places. The guide was friendly and personable.
