“The King of Reality Shows or Trash TV”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Adelyn1977 on 22/05/2014

Before the terrible invention of reality shows, the Discovery line-up (Animal Planet, TLC, History, Science) provided a wealth of informative programming. Now, the airing of anything educational and/or of value, has become so rare I seldom even check to see what's on anymore. Just do an online search for "discovery channel reality shows" (not even including their related channels) and one can clearly see just how bad this has become. Not long ago they aired a [rare] worthwhile show about Christ, the title escapes my bad memory right now. After this, they were glowing in the extremely HIGH viewer results this program garnered, yet they STILL can't see THIS is the kind of programming their public expect from them?! Personally, my favorites involve archeology, history, and Egyptology. I especially loved TLC! Shows like these are are as rare as snow in July! The final straw was the moronic addition of Naked & Afraid and NO, I am NOT a prude! The unnecessary nudity has no value as "the body beautiful" as in Art, as the ones I've seen on their ads have been UGLY. This show has absolutely no value whatsoever and it's not even believable, so what is the point? Yeah, all of these terrible events are taking place with the Discovery crew- right there and they won't offer any assistance??? Come on! When the ad for Naked & Afraid was aired right after Nic Wallenda's crossing the Grand Canyon, I was outraged!!! And they still run ads showing nudity during the day-- when my grandson can see this. WHY aren't more parents outraged by this?! Maybe I am a prude after all, since I don't feel this should be shown during the day-- like when my grandson is here watching Too Cute in Animal Planet. I was forced to block these channels!!!! There is ZERO value in worthless programs like Honey Boo-Boo, a fat little spoiled brat whose claim to fame is based on just how gross and obnoxious she can be. Add Toddlers & Tiaras, a show all about LEGAL child abuse. And I've only touched on 3 examples! The bottom line: Discovery programmers have discovered the real cash cow is in TV FOR IDIOTS, aka Reality Shows and for the sake of profit, they have sacrificed the truly great, Quality programs we all came to expect. I have been paying an extra $33/mo just for these channels (and NatGeo, but they're going the same direction). This garbage content is not worth $33, so I've dropped back to basic cable. I can get plenty of good shows, the ones Discovery, etc., used to show, thru Netflix.

“They are slipping a bit”

Overall, I love Discovery, it taught me a lot of great things. I just got the feeling that, recently, they seem to be a bit more into reality-like format.

Mostly good shows but let them stand on their own and don't try to make everything 10 timce more dangerous than it really is. Ex west-coast logger and fisherman.

Discovery Channel is very interesting and educational, it can be a little graphic nature at times but other than that i like it.
