“Poor quality fresh produce”

★★☆☆☆

written by bonzo26 on 07/02/2014

Other people have told me that Lidl fresh produce does not last as long as that from the more established supermarkets. Recently as a new customer I bought two packs of green beans that when I got them home were already rotting - you know the horrible smelly grey mould that spreads from the tips up the stem - and this was two days before the sell-by date! I live a long way from the store so rather than spend a lot of time and money taking them back I wrote to their Scotland Customer Services department enclosing a photograph of the offending product and the till receipt. I got a quick reply but it asked me for all the information I had already provided. It was headed "Without Prejudice" as if I was claiming thousands of pounds rather than for two packs of beans at 89p each and the cost of a second class stamp!

Surprised at such a wasteful and inefficient Customer Services response I wrote politely to the UK Managing Director at Worple Road, Wimbledon again asking for a refund. Two weeks later no acknowledgement and certainly no reply.

It is clear that the poor service culture described in many of the reviews posted on this site stems right from the top. This is a shame - they can be a low cost retailer with a basic level of facilities and yet provide good customer service. It would cost them less in the long run but the management seems to be too blinkered to see that.

In summary avoid fresh produce and ignore their so called "freshness guarantee" that clearly is meaningless. If you have a problem then you are on your own.
