Natwest is actually one of the best banks i've come across. They are fair, honest and upfront. The terms & conditions regarding overdraft charges, fees, etc is clearly noted both on the website and on their leaflets. It's not their fault people choose not to read them.

I don't get why people have rated natwest so low. I personally have not had a bad experience. With online banking I can check my statements at anytime, I am a shopalic so I have not been paying it off monthly but I think the interest is very low and fair!!

“Since opening a Natwest student account I ' ve had...”

Since opening a Natwest student account I ' ve had nothing but problems. The staff don't know what they're talking about and then make me feel like a terrible customer when I go to make a payment on my credit card without the slip at the bottom, bearing in mind I ' m a student who doesn't carry bank statements round everyday and who doesn't drive so if I ' m passing a Nat West bank and I ' ve got my card I might just want to nip in and make a payment. The problems started last july when I tried to apply for a student account online to get the fee webcam. I encountered some difficulties so phoned the helpline who told me to go into my local branch and complete the application there, where I would still be eligible for a webcam as I started the application online. So I did, and confirmed I would get the webcam, which, no 12 months on I still haven ' t received. So anyway the application went through and they sad I would receive my card within 10 days, 10 days passed, no card, so I rang the branch. "Oh your card is here Miss, waiting for you to pick up". Thanks for letting me know!! So I aid for a taxi to town, no card! "No no, your card is on its way to home address" So paid for a taxi back, waste of time and money! Eventually after 8 weeks of applying and waiting, the card arrived. So now, perhaps this should have out me off, and yet I still went on to apply for a student credit card. Wish I hadnt now! Application was successful, card arrived. Fine. Never use the card for a very long time, was jus for emergencies. When I did eventually use the card and received my statement I noticed a direct debit had been set up on the account to take the minimum payment ot of my student account every month. Now as far as I am aware, you are suppose to be asked if you would like to set up a direct debit?! So, knowing that it was unlikely there would ever e sufficient enough funds to pay this direct debit I rang to cancel it and got an apology for the incorrect way in which it was set up. Fine? No. I then incurred a £38 charge because I obviously hadn ' t cancelled it in time to stop the next months direct debit, which I hadn't been warned about. However, being at uni and receiving so many letters I failed to notice this and continued to pay the minimum every month myself by going into a branch. I have now finished uni for the year and decided to organise all my bank statements etc and discovered this £38. So I rang to find out what it was all about. They explained that when there wasn't enough funds to pay the direct debit, I am charged this ridiculous amount of money. And apparently it is compulsory to have a direct debit set up in the first 6 months of your student credit card. So, why wasn't I told this, and 2; why was I able to cancel it after 2 months?
I have never experienced so much problems with anything else in my life. And I ' m not the only one, everyone I know who banks with Natwest wishes they never had.
I just cant wait to be earning enough money to pay everything off and never have to deal with them again.
Whats more is, with all the problems and incorrect information I have been given, I've probably spent more than £38 on phone calls because when you have a problem, you have to pay to sort it out!

“I applied for NatWest credit card when I was student,...”

written by Linda shih on 27/02/2008

I applied for NatWest credit card when I was student, and hold it for around 1.5 yr. I get a credit limit for £350 but this limit isn't enough for me when I travel (I use it to buy airtickets). I've been charged by 'Overlimit Fee' £12 several times, and have requested to increase my credit limit but was refused without a reasonable reason. Therefore, I have to treat this credit card as a 'Debit Card': I deposit fund to increase my credit limit. However, even so, I receive bill of 'Overlimit Fee'!!! BTW, the customer service hotline seems always busy... : (

“I applied for a student Natwest credit card at the...”

I applied for a student Natwest credit card at the same time as applying for a student current account with Natwest. Since i had been banking with natwest for four years before that i had no trouble with the process. i had overdraft facilities for my account before but never went into them so i think they knew me and knew i was okay handling finances hence why i was approved the credit card.
this is my very first credit card and im an undergrad student.
have used my card every month but each time stayed in my limit. i only purchase things which i know i will be able to pay (when my wages come in). i always pay my bill in full about 7days before the due date. Ive received no problems and no unexpected charges. i pay them back exactly what i borrowed and nothing more.
also when i make big payments using my card (100 pounds or more) natwest customer service rings me to make sure that the spending was in fact me. which i think is nice. gives me piece of mind that they are monitoring my acc for fraudulent use.
i am very happy with natwest and would definitely recommend them.

“I am first year student and just applied for a credit...”

written by AWILLIA on 10/05/2007

I am first year student and just applied for a credit card from Natwest with a credit limit is £250. Unfortunately I was over limit on my fifth month by £22. Before I even know it, I got £43 fine. I called the Customer Service to find out what has happened and the answer is ...?
£12 over limit for the fifth month
£12 for late payment
£ 7 for interest rate
£12 over limit for the sixth month (even though I was only late for one day )
Now I asked how come the advert said 56 interest free days or 0% interest for 9 months ... what did they answer? Did you read the terms and conditions?
It is a joke right? How many pages are they? plus they are small prints. If we read all the terms and conditions every time we buy something or do something then properly it will be forever.
So WATCH OUT FOR NATWEST STUDENT CREDIT CARD. they are not what they say.

“I applied for a Natwest credit card, as my student...”

written by Laur on 27/07/2006

I applied for a Natwest credit card, as my student account is with them. I received the first statement and paid it in full. Then just before I received the second statement I received a letter saying the card had to be cut up and returned without any explanation as to why. Pretty confused as to what I had done wrong, I phoned them, only be to told they had changed their criteria and I no longer fitted it. They refused to discuss what the actual problem was. The limit on the credit card was only £350, and I was not up to that limit. I had used it a few times when I was skint, as all students usually are, to buy food and petrol. My advice is, if you are looking for a student credit card that you can use when your student loan has run out and your funds are low, Natwest are really not a good idea.
