“Steve Haze Review”

★★★★★

written by Phil1975 on 16/04/2013

I learned to fly with Steve Haze. Here are my impressions: The first thing that struck me about Steve is that he is a very genuine character, who has a clear passion for the sport. However safety is also something he pushes right from the start. I felt that because of these qualities I would train with Steve, as opposed to other local schools. I think Steve's instructional style is sometimes direct and this is sometimes what is needed. If I was ever about to unknowingly do something potentially unsafe then I was sometimes firmly told to drop the wing, but then we would discuss where I had gone wrong so that I could correct any errors and continue safely. Personally I would rather have a firm, safe instructor than someone who is willing to watch someone do something potentially unsafe. If you can't take a bit of banter (or give it back) then you may have to think about weather knitting might be a more suitable activity for you! I was only allowed to fly when Steve felt I was ready and not when I thought I was enough of a hero. However I progressed reasonably quickly because I committed 100 percent to the training, this is the real key to success. If you leave it too long between training sessions then you tend to forget things & end up having to spend time getting back up to the standard you were at beforehand. I have been flying just over a year now & would consider Steve to be a mate because he has always taken an interest in my flying & I know he is always at the end of the telephone for advice. Interestingly, since Getting signed off I have been lucky enough to be able to fly in various parts of the country & with various groups of pilots I have seen many of the (numerous) techniques for handling wings etc & I can honestly say that the techniques the I have been taught are the best and most up to date of what I have seen. I would have to say that the negative review is not a fair representation of Steve as an instructor, in fact reading this reviewers other reviews I would suggest they tend to be very negative & whinging.

“Great, Professional and Safe!”

★★★★★

written by PaulGrover on 06/03/2013

As someone who has always had a passion for the early days of aviation, the growing dream that I myself might one day take to the air has always had to be tempered by family duties and a lack of the necessary cash to invest in gaining a PPL along with the ongoing cost of hangerage, maintenance, etc. It was a happy coming together of both these factors to discover paramotoring and to the realization that a. it was within my budget and b. was as close to the physical simplicity of the early days as you could possibly get. In the autumn, having been earthbound for almost all my 45 years, I finally achieved my dream, and what’s more, can now safely fly an aircraft that fits neatly into the back of my Mini…wow! [name removed]’s enthusiasm and commitment to the sport is infectious. From the start he makes you feel you are about to join a happy band of people for whom the dream can become a reality. He also takes the safety aspects of the sport seriously – paramotoring is different from other forms of flying (all of which have a risk factor) in that you are very much part of the flying machine especially on take off and landing. I was under no illusion that to achieve success with paramotoring you need to commit, both physically and mentally, and under Steve’s watchful gaze I progressed reasonably swiftly through the syllabus. At times it was frustrating when my skill at handling the wing (crucial before you can even think about flying safely) just wouldn’t match the solid theories being developed through [name removed]’s insightful tuition, or the vagaries of the British weather got in the way. I have seen an earlier negative review on this site and have to take issue with it. [name removed] pushes you, a little like a personal trainer, but without this I think it would take much, much longer to make progression. A paramotor is not like so many other modern gadgets that you just jump in, switch on, and set off in. Surely that is the point. And just like any personal goal that you set yourself, the thrill of achievement is so much the sweeter when it comes. So I would heartily recommend [name removed] Paramotoring to anyone wishing to take up the sport. You don’t have to be young or super-fit (I am neither of these), but you do have to be committed. If you are [name removed] will see you safely take your first steps into the air. PS - As well as continuing to paramotor, I have just started my hill conversion (to allow me to free-fly paraglider sites) and on my first day my new instructor complimented me on my ground-handling skills. He suggested that I had obviously been taught properly! Money well spent… or should I say invested as I aim to be benefitting for years to come. Thanks [name removed]

“Love paramotoring, but instructor is a bully”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Joninlondon on 30/05/2012

I started this course full of passion and enthusiasm for paramotoring but had to quit due to Steve Haze acting like a bully during this course. Let me start by saying I already have my Private Pilots License, ran the London Marathon this year and climbed to Everest Base Camp 2 in Nepal. I'm not super fit, but certainly can handle myself. Steve Haze told me on the second day of training that I would not have the strength to do it when one hand control of the wing ripped out of hand during ground handling. I told him a massive gust of wind hit it and pulled me off the ground, to which Steve said "Can't fly then, you won't have the strength to do it". Another time he said "It makes me very angry you appear to have forgotten what we learnt last time". I can handle a light joshing, but he was an outright bully and an older man on the same course as me complained to him after he had experienced similar "joshing”. I am currently reviewing legal options as it makes me very sick that he asks for the whole fee, nearly thousand pounds, up front which gives him no incentive to be a good coach at all. Tread carefully and think it through before parting with your hard earnt cash.
