“I have just purchased my very first MK1 which I picked...”

written by on 15/05/2010

I have just purchased my very first MK1 which I picked up 1 week ago. It is 1983 New Zealand new with only 1 owner and only 100,000km's or 60,000miles. Completely original with no radio ever being fitted or paint work ever done. It still has signs of the cavity wax showing throughout the vehicle. This vehicle is probably the best example of a MK1 in New Zealand. It has been garaged all its life and has a complete service history from a VW agent.
I drove from Auckland to Dunedin (approx 16hrs)in one hit and had an absolute blast. This little car is so much fun and fast. Will be a shame not to use it much but will be keeping the km's down. Happy driving!!!!

I'm now 35 and had to wait until I was 31 before I could get my hands on this - I still don't get much time to use her but could never part with her - I only did 300 miles last year and turned down an offer of £3000 for her and this is an old c reg - I could have sold it and bought 3 Saxos for that but then again that would have been stupid.

“I have had this dream of owning a Volkswagen Golf GTi...”

★★★★★

written by Andy the Cab on 28/04/2005

I have had this dream of owning a Volkswagen Golf GTi Mk1 Cab since I was 18 it has taken me till im 41 to realise my dream due to family commitments (kids)

I bought the car off ebay for £1000 about three weeks ago, I have put some alloys on it, new roof and cd player, so it stands me at about £1600 now, (bargain) I live in Bolton Lancashire and I have to say you don't see many Golf softops up here must be the rain. I have never driven a car that poeple stop and look at with green eyes before.
I now want the traffic lights to go red so that I can teach the youthfull drivers of today in their kitted out cleo's, 106s, 206s and newer golf GTIs why the 80s where such a good time to grow up. I love the look on their faces I see through my rear view mirror.
I also have a new 307 (the wifes car) but the golf demands to be driven a real drivers car.
I am in no doubt that my spending on this car will get out of hand if im not carefull but I cant help myself, I'm now thinking of a respray, and an induction kit, and god knows what else. Any views on the induction kit would be helpfull.

You cant beat a old school golf the greatest.
Be nice to see more of them about these days.
I hardly see one anymore and when I do it usually ragged and sketchy looking.
Its good too see so many people have still got interest in them.

Sorry mate, but I would love to agree with you, but the only hot hatch that has stood the test of time from the 80's is the Vauxhall Chevette HSR. I love mk1 golf's - doesn't even need to be a GTi. I don't know why, but I just do. But a Saxo VTS would kill you off at the lights, depending on the driver; unless your car is modified.

hi guys ,it seems that teh GTi mk1 bug is a world wide, or rather, global phenomenan. i am from South africa and have owned a the gti mk 1 for the last 8 yrs. like the original author of the article, i am 41, and now wish to indulge my golf with some of the "fancies". my current mileage is 401950 kms with teh original motor. i have had countless offers to purchase, but replacement value is unrealistic. the model is an '84 rhd and i am curious as to how it differs from the uk model

written by Bigpimp on 14/09/2004

I own a Volkswagen Golf GTi Mk1 1.8 Cabriolet. My older brother owned a Golf convertable in its peak time, my sister owned one as well, and both never failed to impress the locals and neighbours.
So now I followed the tradition and bought one as well. Now, I can without a doubt, say that the Golf is truely stunning.
When I pull up to the lights, the guy sat in his £10,000 drop top goes green with envy, because he paid 10 times the amount I did, and I still look better sat on 17" rims, with my music popping, while the ladies walk past giving me the eye.
Naturally when the lights go amber the race is on, and believe me it shifts, 2nd gear eats 50mph with no problem. I give the guy a good run for his money, before his 3.0 litre engine starts to roar behind my rear end and naturally he's going to keep going, but my points already been made, I don't need to risk riting my car off to win the race.
I love the Mk1 because its looks great, moves lovely and its one of a kind.
My car is finished in white with a black hood and colour co-ordinated white interior. I have had future plans for my car and after reading the reviews, its helped to reassure me that I've made the right choice and stuck with VW.
The only downfall is no A.B.S or Power steering. Doing 110 mph and then braking doesn't make me feel greatly confident, but you can't have it all. Also the rims on my car make it difficult to do a 3 point turn, and its definatley murder on the arms, but I look on the bright side, MY BICEPS ARE BEGINNING TO BULGE (LOL).
I love my car, and I'm sure Golf Mk1 drivers agree. Bow down to the CLASSIC!!!

Brakes can be easily improved by the fitting of steel braided brake hoses about 60 quid and fitting the right pads try www.cludgti.com for advice. If its too thirsty try having the fuel injection system overhauled mines about 35mpg on mixed use mines red with the white interior and white roof if you use a higher octane additive you might start leaving the 10000 drop for dust trust me........

Ive had the VW Golf GTi Mk1 now for about 8 months in all that time nothing has gone wrong with it. Its got 15x7 inch alloys on and has been lowerd not much can touch it on the b-roads. As for straight line perfomance its not bad either its only a 1.8 8 valve but its still gives most thing a good run but in wet its hard to stop wheel spin which can be annoying. Im soon to put a 1.8 20valve turbo engine in it so ill update u soon.

I think this car is great but it won\'t really keep up with my 205- still it is a classic and if you have one you should hold on to it.
The old school hatches are brilliant fun but will not been there modern counter parts such as a clio cup or civic type r- I have driven them and they are absolutley fantastic.

written by d4m0n on 12/01/2004

I own both a Saxo VTR and a Golf 1800 GTi campaign model. I use my Saxo as the day to day car and Golf for when I need cheering up and on the weekend.
There is no comparison for me. I find the saxo fun to drive but the golf is amazing.
The saxo is common and so was the golf in its time. Could you imagine a saxo standing the sands of time and still being in such good condition in 20 years time?
They are both good cars, but the golf wins hands down.
At the end of the day I'm lucky I have the best of both worlds.
The simple question for me is ......
....Which will I have in 5 years time?....

No need to answer....as long as the trees, walls and Sunday drivers stand back!!

I own a 1.1 VW Golf GTi Mk1, it was my first car, ive been reading all your reveiws and agree with you all, i cant stop praising it! i bought this car for nothing off my parents at 17, i drove it for a yr an a half then misstakingly bought a ford orion! (what was i thinking!!) when the orion was causing me problems it was time to dust off the golf again, i resprayed the drivers door, wheel arches and boot, replaced all filters oil and rad antifreeze, turned the key and it roard into action! after it standing for a year or two i was very impressed but neva doubted it for a second. ive plans for a bigger engine and gut the interior, id like any comments on hints and tips as im still fresh to the dub scene, i will neva part with my car again!
