I had one of these little beasts from 1986 to 1990 - best car I've ever had. Did regular runs from Borders to Skye for the weekend - 600 mile round trip mixing motorway, Dual c/way, A roads and silly twisty B roads - ate them all up with ease. Handling was amost F1 like - cornered like it was on rails and was exceptionally forgiving (maybe that was the Pirellis - an expensive luxury!! Slight reliability issues, but like many others on this page, would buy another one tomorrow!

I bought a Mercury Grey XR2 back in 1991 when it was 2 years old. I sold it about 5 years ago and regret it.... the best little car I have ever had. I would love to trace it so see if it is still on the road.

I bought a mk2 XR2 in 1987 and the engine rebuilt by Brogg Bros nr Malton north yorkshire to stage 4 spec producing
160bhp. The car very fast to a dangerous level at times it used to just accelerate away leaving must cars for dead. The only car that it could keep with was a old sierra coswoth. The car had a stage 4 BDA head with holbay cam and used 2 weber 40 DCNF which drank petrol like water average mpg of 10mpg. The only fault was the cars body could not cpe with the extreme power.
It was a very exciting car to drive.

Was my first car at 17 and paid twice the value of the car for the insurance but was worth it. Great little car, excellent road holding, very responsive, good fun, reliable and easy to work on. Biscuit tin build quality and most parts were falling off or rusting especially under the plastic body kit. Would love to own a refurbished one now for a run around.

I have had 7 of these little beasts and am in the middle of restoring one back to its former glory after its been sitting under a tree on a farm for 3 years. This particular car im restoring I will never sell and other cars I have had including a brand new focus and mr2 do not compare to these superb little hot hatch's. Highly reccomended to anyone who wants a fast and reliable motor, and I guarantee you will not look back.

I had a Mercury Grey concourse MK2 XR2 in 1993 and it was the best car I have ever owned without a doubt. This car summed up Ford in the late 80's and early nineties, before the insurance geeks killed them off and Ford decided to go down the Euro box route. Would love another XR2.

This car was great in its time, but is now seen mainly in provincial market towns being driven by young men in burberry baseball caps at high speed with a lot of smoke coming out of the back. To rate this car the same as a Porsche Boxster 3.2 S is simply ludicrous and highlights the need to set up a separate part of this site for cars worth less than £200

I've got a BoraV5 now but I still look on with envy when I pass an Ford Fiesta XR2 mkII, fun and loud, Good looks, I thought, and the drive was so much fun I'll mention it again. Winding roads are what this car was made for - sticks like glue. The standard set up was bang on and the engine had a certain drone that only an XR2 makes, a place in my heart forever.

★★★★★

written by Hellequin on 21/04/2006

I've now owned two MkII XR2's, both have been brilliant cars and real fun to own and drive.

Both mine Ford Fiesta's were in Mercury Grey which I think looks best and both were unmodified with the original pepperpot alloys.

The power is quite good even though the cars are now getting on in years, they won't smoke the latest hot hatches but you wouldn't be left too far behind either, certainly not on a twisty road! Handling is brilliant even on a car 17y ears old which my last one was. It feels glued to the road in the dry and I found that quiet roundabouts were good fun in the wet, getting really controllable front end slides!

The brakes showed their age on my last car and if I'd kept it I would have considered a disc conversion kit for the back and some bigger discs up front.

You can pick these cars up really cheaply now and if you get a good one you won't lose, I made money on my last one! Bits are quite cheap and there are quite a few specialist spares dealers about. Go for the best standard, unmodified one you can afford.

A cracking, fun little car for not a lot of money!

written by ASTRABOY on 28/02/2006

Ok I had a MK 1 Ford Fiesta XR2(you can tell as it had 4 gears) I was only 17 when I bought it and 6 months later had to sell it because I couldn't afford the insurance. I always wanted a Fiesta Super sport for a first car and if I had bought one I would probably been able to afford to have run it and kept it longer. When I couldn't find a Supersport I decided either to get a Metro turbo or XR2. An XR2 came up first and it was a good little car with very hard suppension and a noisy engine that needed another gear badly. It was fun while it lasted though.

written by yoshiebikes on 17/03/2005

Just bought my second Ford Fiesta XR2 mkII after a gap of about 11 years. Had a selection of cars since including an Audi 90 Quattro and recently a turbo'd Scooby (my second car is an old 2.9 4x4 Sierra) but have returned to my old favourite. Being an "oldie" now at 36 the insurance is now a bit healthier at £165 fully comp compared to £1200 TPFT on my last one. Loving being back behind the wheel of one and I would recommend these to anyone but make sure you get a good one. Planning a K+N, four branch manifold, full stainless system and maybe some day a cam (if the wife let's me!)
