“Pretty good sound”

★★★★☆

written by PhillyRindos685 on 06/06/2013

I bought these speaker more then 1 year ago, I must say that I've been really pleased with my purchase, the kind of music I listen to is very bass driven, mainly electronic music with loads of sounds and deep pumping baseline, before deciding to buy the speakers I went to a shop to listen to them and was quite impressed, I then decided to buy them and never looked back, the price was decent, the style is great, and the sound is very good.

“good looking and good sound”

★★★★☆

written by PinoyM on 26/01/2013

Firstly I'm impressed by the looking of these speakers, really quite nice! After trying the sound, it's not bad too, high/low pitch, bass all good, I especially love the way to turn it load, very beating. Then I decided to take it! Basically quite worth the money!

decidedly average sounding, wich i suppose for the price is all u can ask, i did notice there is a rather large flat spot in the audio range, they seem to be all bass and treble but rather lacking in the mid range section. If you are concidering buying a set of these i would reccomend also buying a small set of bookshelf speakers to add to the mid range sound.... All in all good looks, not a bad sound and good value...

I have had my set for 6 years now, along with another pair of acoustic floor-standers which are "power house 2000 series" much larger than "av1" series and just as good value 4 money. i run these together with two of acoustics mini subs with a denon pma-255 uk amp.Sound comes from Cambridge audio separates cd player and modified x-box 360 ltd edition, witch sounds great!. i make my own tunes with music software, so i sometimes plug the laptop in 2 the amp and hey presto recording studio! i have several hifi set ups in my house. this one is the cheapest but, i enjoy it just as much as the others witch cost much more. but well done Acoustic sSlution's for selling excellent sound at an affordable price witch can be enjoyed by everyone! Nice!

Overall i am very happy with my pair of acoustics and they have really proven to be tough old gals as well!! i recommend them for the starter enthusiast who is looking to upgrade from a packaged speaker set with an AV amp!! These speakers are very good value for money, i paid £50 for the pair about 4 years ago! I do run some quality gale speaker cable though and it does make a difference! Overall i am very happy with my pair of acoustics and they have really proven to be tough old gals as well!!

I too run the 5.1 set up of these speakers and use them with the Yamaha sub that came with my old Yamaha RX-V396rds amp, I have only got praise for these speakers- I binned the small speakers that came with the amp as they lacked midrange and bought these frm Currys as they were brand new and clearance boxed stock-Wow when they settled in after around 2 weeks, I was so impressed! The bass is kicking even with the sub off line and the treble and midrange are tight and cut through the bass for great definition. if you can get hold of these now in 2008--------GET THEM! Better performance with the covers off- but my cat likes testing here claws on speakers so I leave the covers on.

Do not spend loads of money on bug name speakers without testing these out!

“Just got a mint pair of Acoustic Solutions AV120 for...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 16/09/2008

Just got a mint pair of Acoustic Solutions AV120 for 12 quid, yes that 12 British Pounds. They have a solid sound, although the bass can boom with cab resonance, and I think they can't be properly designed reflex speakers with a reflex baffle and tuned tube and port. Probably just a hole in the back. Mids are a bit harsh, and the freq separation is a bit ho hum. They have a generally good sound, actually, think beefed up and slightly tighter midi system speakers and you are there. OK the last floorstanders I bought were Bowers and Wilkins DM603's and these are not in the same league, so I'm not giving a particularly critical or detailed review, suffice to say, for the price of a burger and pint down the local, these are good value. Pay more than 60-70 quid new, you might start getting disappointed at the inoffensive, unremarkable but good background music sound from their Argos furniture type cabinets, but they will give an acceptably good quality sound to fill an average room.

I have had a pair of these AV120 speakers for about 6 years. I still have them! Don't get me wrong my home cinema kit isn't brilliant, I have a Sherwood amp and Celestion surrounds. These speakers kick some butt for the dosh. I have a reasonable sized lounge: 15 ft square, unless you want to annoy the neighbours I don't think you need a sub with these. The bass is loud and sounds good across wood flooring. I would recommend these to any student or lower budgeted sound listener.

Go on, buy some!

“If you are skint , look no further. They are medium...”

★★★★★

written by robred on 11/02/2007

If you are skint , look no further. They are medium efficiency, so 30 watt per channel amps are minimum required to be able to crank up the volume without clipping.
Use a good front end and amp however and they perform way beyond the price on most music. Used this way they are a good choice for someone who has bought a high quality CD player, a good turntable ( yes vinyl still lives), with a mid to high end amp and run out of money. These will do fine until better speakers can be afforded.
Just like the Hi-Fi specialist advice that in the 80's paired a £600+ turntable tonearm, and cartridge a £400 amp with a £70 set of speakers, good advice that still holds true.
Speakers cannot reproduce what is not there, so the better the source the better the sound. This applies whatever the cost of the speakers. Put expensive speakers with a mediocre amp and front end big disappointment.

I bought mine 3 years ago and have used them with a Rotel 830 mk 2 and a Sony XE570 CD when I needed new bass drivers for some Bose 301's.
They are now driven by a Cambridge Azur 640C CD and a Valve Amp. They sound great with tight bass and clean and open mid/top, and will do while I save up for some better speakers.

“When I saw these Acoustic Solutions AV120 stereo...”

★★★★★

written by joewetherill on 23/06/2004

When I saw these Acoustic Solutions AV120 stereo speakers over a year and a half ago for £50 in Currys they immediately caught my eye, mainly because I didn't think they would sell floorstanders in Currys!

I thought I'd give them a go anyway, I figured even if they were rubbish it's not too much money to loose out on.

To my amazement when I got them home and hooked them up to my amp (which was then a Sony TAFE 570) they really surprised me. The bass was punchy and loud, perfectly complimented by the crisp treble from the powerful tweeters.

Since then I have had 2 amps (Cambridge Audio Azur 540c & Technics SUV500) The Cambridge made them sound even clearer but because of the CAP5 protection system I could never really turn it up as loud as I wanted without the temperature sensor cutting in.

The Technics I have now is perfect and with a second set of speaker outputs I am tempted to buy 2 more and hooking them up to that.

The sound you want is basically the sound you get. If I want punchy bass then I just set the amp to play direct and slap up the volume or for the resonating bass just adjust the frequency controls and the speakers respond perfectly at low or high volumes. (I can turn my amp up to 3/4 without distortion and believe me this is pretty loud)

I can hear what other reviewers are talking about with the mid-range as sometimes you loose a bit but this is only an issue for some kinds of music and it's not too much of a problem, I think some other AS speakers have a tweeter bass driver and mid-range driver?

★★☆☆☆

written by drewshardlow on 26/04/2004

The Acoustic Solutions AV120 Stereo speakers perform well in the high and middle ranges, but the base is confused, with some irritating resonances and I am sure develops marked non-linearities at higher volumes. Never really creates a convincing base image. OK for some classical music but lousy for indie pop.

written by PaulOvereem on 23/03/2004

Yes there are better out there, but not for this money, the Acoustic Solutions AV120 are £49.99 at currys so I took a chance, ended up £39.99 at the check out.
Got them home hooked them up to a Dennon DCD 825 CD
Musical Fidelity Elektra E11 amp with a pair of Audio Henly Interconneccts, I know this is 4-5 year old kit, All I can say is after running in, is they kept up with Female Vocals, Said bring it on to Lenny Kravits, and kept up with Hard house& Psy Trance, Have not checked them out on any clasical, but from what I have had time to listen to so far, I expect to be pleased.
