The main idea behind the short sized smart car was to make it easy to park in Europe's congested city street. Amazingly, it is short enough for it to be parked nose-in; and even long ways in it only takes up about a third of a normal sized car. Smart, formerly MCC smart and originally supported by Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch, is now part of DaimlerChrysler. The name smart is an acronym for Swatch Mercedes ART. It was merged with Mercedes-Benz in 2006. Apart from the original smart Fortwo, a sporty smart Roadster and a supermini smart Forfour were also offered. These other cars have now been discontinued.



There were also plans to introduce a small off-roader called the Formore but development of this was cancelled. The original Smart car has found fame in a number of films including The Da Vinci Code where the main characters used a Smart Car throughout.

    Now on my second Smart Fortwo - the newer model is a great improvement. Easy to park, easy on petrol, nippy, loaded with lots of goodies and despite what you would think, you can get a heck of a lot into it. What's not to like?     We have the newer smart the 57 reg and it is fantastic, even my husband of whom would not admit to owning one at the start has admitted that it is a fantastic little car. There is a suprising amount of room, we have a Labradour of whom rides comfortably in the boot and when we looked after afriends ...

    If I were to advise anyone on buying a Smart Car it would be DONT unless you are willing to fork out a fortune on repairs then steer clear.. other than that the car is brill but some garages will take you for granted.

    Only had it for a few weeks, bought as a replacement for a Merc SL. I have not stopped smiling, it's great fun, and I'm saving the planet as well.
