In 2004 and 2005 Rufus Wainwright released his album Want in two parts. It was meant to be his observations about the world upon turning thirty.
Part one, titled, unsurprisingly, Want One is the more straightforward record of the two - Want Two being almost operatic in places and far less immediate, though no less rewarding. It opens with the orchestral giddiness of "Oh What a World," a charming song about the fast pace of modern life, with Rufus lamenting about constant travel and the confusion of seeing "Men reading fashion magazines" and of "always travelling but not in love."
He takes us through a series of tracks about unrequited love ("14th Street"), heartbreak ("Harvester of Hearts"), the first tentative moments of a new relationship ("Natasha"), family misunderstandings ("Dinner at Eight") and the confusion of growing older in a fast-paced world ("Vibrate").
This is such a lush and warm album, that even without the sincerity and beauty of Rufus' lyrics it would be enough to just sit and listen to the soothing tones of his voice, and the rich instrumentation which he uses to great effect. He is a masterful songwriter, and only continues to grow stronger with each album.
Recently he released his two Want albums as one double CD, and together they do comprise a very accessible, meaningful and touching masterpiece, which anyone willing to give it a bit of time and concentration will grow to love.
