“Great Couple of days in Glenshee”

★★★★☆

written by mick85 on 04/04/2013

Skiing in the UK is hit and miss sorted a last minute trip to Glenshee having seen the five day forecast. Result one good day a bit overcast but loads of snow and no queues. Day two blue skies big lumps of powder off Glas Maol and near alpine conditions as good a days skiing as I have had all year. The lifts are hard work and you dont get a rest and the runs are shorter but a brilliant and unexpected extra couple of days on the snow.

“Huge area, friendly staff, accessible skiing”

★★★★★

written by on 31/03/2013

Glenshee is the largest ski resort in Scotland, stretching over 3 valleys, with a total of 22 lifts. I ski there regularly with my family and love it. Staff are friendly and approachable both in the base area and on the hills. Tips; Don't use the outside toilets at the base area. These are owned by Grampian council who do not maintain them well at all. Not pleasant. There are toilets inside the cafe area or at the other cafes on the hills, Much better. If coming up at the weekend, especially on a good snow day, it will be BUSY. FACT, accept it and make the best of it. If you can, come midweek. It is often like having your own private resort, even on powder days. Leave early, book ticket online or bring cash as the q's are much shorter. Get hire equipment sorted before you arrive - there are a few places on the road up from Blairgowrie or in Braemar. Bring a packed lunch, (food is not the cheapest and not gourmet, although soups are always nice) If you go to the cafe, eat lunch early to avoid q's at cafe and then you can get out on the slopes when they get quiet as everyone else then goes to lunch! The roads can be difficult to clear. Check on the glenshee website/transport scotland/winterhighland websites to get an indication if road is open/likely to open. Bramear snowgates tend to open first as the road is less steep from that side. There are a number of nice b&bs there and a couple of bigger (bit anonymous though) bus tour type hotels. Ski school is good. Freshtracks run a good school, great with kids.

“Not a good place”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Bigdavefrombrummy on 28/03/2013

Spent a few days here skiing with family. Not a good idea the ski pass was incredibly over priced for what was on offer. The food was cheap and undercooked and charged at gourmet prices. Over zealous ski patrol who started screaming at 10 year old boy. Save your money go to the alps

Penfold2012's Response to Bigdavefrombrummy's Review

Don't recognise Glenshee in this review at all!!!! The staff at the centre and on the hill have always been unfailingly polite and friendly. Lifties are forever offering my 7yr old assistance and encouragement. Food, yes is expensive but that comes with the territory. ALL ski resorts (or indeed most remote areas where supplies have to be transported distances) are eye wateringly expensive. Last year I was charged £4 for a mediocre coffee in france. Coffee in Glenshee is £1.80. .Ski pass at £24 compares well with prices in Europe. Totally perplexed with your review.

“Glenshee is this what we have to put up with in 2013 ?”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 11/02/2013

Went to Glenshee on 19th Jan 2013, Note to self: big mistake to go at the weekend, Biggggg snow day at the weekend, so conditions were very reasonable !! However only half the lifts were open so queue's were mad, 20 mins for tickets to board and don't bother if you want to hire over an hour extra !!! Then queue's for poma's were up to 40 mins, that's about 3 times down a piste in the morning ! ! ! and to top it all off some guy from the ski patrol suggesting it was the punters fault the poma's kept breaking down and was responsible for the long queue's. Finally to top it off going to the toilet's was worse than going to the portal cabin's at a music festival while wearing your snow board gear, stank to high heaven and clearly hadn't been cleaned for months. Come on Glenshee you can do better ! ! !

“I skied at Glenshee yesterday and found the following. ”

★★★★☆

written by Trumplesneaker on 28/02/2011

I skied at Glenshee yesterday and found the following.

Plus points - Lots of uplift so on a sunny, snowy Sunday there were no queues the whole day - Cairngorm the day before had 20 minute waits at times! There are lots of cafes and toilets scattered around. Lots of variety in the runs. Beautiful location and ample parking. Lots to explore all day as the area is nicely spread out.

Minus points - Contrary to other reviews I've seen, I found the lift staff unhelp and uninterested, bordering on surly! Not good for your customers. Coffee in the cafes wasn't great.

Conclusion: In many ways I preferred it to Cairngorm, especially the lack of queues! Well worth a visit.

“I have just been to Glenshee for the first time. There...”

★★★★☆

written by on 23/12/2010

I have just been to Glenshee for the first time. There were great conditions at the mountain today and I was very surprised by the skiable area on the mountain. There are lots of pisted runs and wide open non-pisted areas which had excellent snow cover and very few rocks (which is unusual for Scotland).

The resort is really spread out so there is plenty of room on the slopes. The pomas go across about 4 different valleys so you can travel quite far, going up and down across multiple summits, with lots of off piste in between. I know Glencoe well, have been to Nevis a few times and did a day at Aviemore. Based on my experience today, I'd rate Glenshee as my favourite.

Negatives are that the last 25 miles on the road (driving from Glasgow) are along a pretty bendy stretch which takes a while to drive. If it was an icy day, it might be a bit of a nightmare both driving and on the mountain(but that's true anywhere in Scotland). The pomas weren't really a problem and it's great that there are so many.

I will be going back again. If there were sunny days with snow like today consistently, Glenshee would be comparable with any small resort in Europe.

“Glenshee is excellent. We have skied there for years....”

★★★★☆

written by JW14 on 07/04/2010

Glenshee is excellent. We have skied there for years. This year we have had four trips and all had great snow and three out of four had fantastic weather. The fourth was a bit overcast making the snow surface difficult to see. May just have been my goggles !
Food is excellent - bacon rolls fab. Baked potatoes and salad lovely too. Two cafes in the mountains and one down at the car park. Tows fine to use although one of the T-Bars - to the right of Butcharts, not recommended with a young child, particularly if any chance of ice under the tow. But the slopes are all great. Butcharts is our favourite for variety. There were also some snowboard small jumps set up to try (and large too). The far run on sunnyside beyond the cafe seems to get the best of the snow. Watch your head at this tow as you get on as its one of these ones with a low thing. I would say that if you are a beginner then the runs at the car park are flat and good to start but if you can get up to sunnyside and the runs on far side there and the little one running from the cafe there then those are good to try and a bit more like real skiing and also quieter. The runs are all safe - I cant think of any horrendous drops which you can get at some other resorts. If you find your skiing is not up to it I think you could walk off from most areas. We had no problems with queues for the tows this year. As soon as you get away from the main ones from the car park then it is quiet elsewhere. We stayed in Perth and drove the hour up from there. There are Travel Inns and Innkeepers Lodges there which are good value for money.

“Good Points: Very well built pistes, easily accessed...”

Good Points: Very well built pistes, easily accessed from the road, vararity of runs, good pisting by the team.

Bad Point: Long time before the perfect day emerged, icy in busy areas, some long queues particully for hire

General Comments: Glenshee has to be the best ski centre I have yet been to, with plenty of varaity in the runs, there was always something new to try out, the conditions on that day were perfect, all the avaliable runs were open, I will definately be going back there, even if the conditions are not quite as good as last time.

“Glenshee is a lovely resort with a whole host of runs...”

★★★☆☆

written by iainmstrachan on 22/02/2009

Glenshee is a lovely resort with a whole host of runs to go at. However for me the antiquated button lifts were tricky at best, and I thought downright impossible once the snow started to deteriorate. Best left to the pro's at that stage. Bearing in mind the cost of the lift pass, it was frustrating to say the least for me to spend the day falling off a button lift.
We visited in late Feb 2009, starting in good snow, and skiing around bare spots and huge holes in the snow to fast streams beneath.

I found this review not helpful because his major complaint is with the button lifts and his inability to use them! Learn to use them is the answer, this isn't Glenshee's fault!

“Glenshee is excellent with over 20 lifts and 30 runs...”

★★★★★

written by hillhopper on 13/11/2007

Glenshee is excellent with over 20 lifts and 30 runs which enable skiers of all abilities to ski here. The facilities here are really good with classes for beginners, restaurants and snow maintenance, its ideal for someone to learn to ski without having to travel further afield.

We stayed at a B&B locally and drove in each day, the car park is located right by the ski lifts so you can get stuck in straight away.

The views are absolutely amazing and I would highly recommend, especially for the ski classes!!!
