Romance and Cigarettes is one of those films that days after you are still not sure of what to make of it. It has a good enough plot line, man has an affair and we see the fall out with his wife and the ongoings of the other women, strangely this is seen from the mans point of view and not that of the either the wife or tart. It shows the struggles of a working class family within in a down trodden area of America. The film then just bursts in to song which are fully choreographed and entertaining although mimed and it just doesn't merge with the hardness of the the film. I believe the thought behind this is the pure emotion could not be expressed in words so songs seemed to be the way the characters could put depth into their tale. It has some every funny scenes, great acting together with a fantastic cast and in the end it shows how love will always survive.
