“Not fit for purpose ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 14/12/2023

I have been trying to get an appointment for over 3 weeks by using the call centre number as this is the only way you can contact them. Once you contact the call centre they then send a message to the job centre, the job centre is then supposed to call you to arrange an appointment or anything else you may need. I have now called the call centre approximately 20+ times over the last 3 weeks to send messages to ashford job centre. They have NEVER called me ? I am still trying to get them to call me every day using the same system. I would go to the job centre if I could drive , but I cannot drive at the moment because of an operation. Even if I go further and complain they don’t have to reply for 15 days. The whole system is not fit for purpose and rather than help people all it does is cause upset and anxiety.

Never get back to you. Awful communication! Never see the same person twice! No help at all with getting a job! Telephone appointments often dont happen because they dont call at appointment times then they mark you down as NOT ATTENDED! Absolute shambles of a system! The list goes on and on! They dont ever let you know when your money has stopped! The staff just dont seem to care and have NO regard for people with anxiety or mental health problems! If you can somehow get by without using this awful system PLEASE DO!

Nobody knows what they are doing, its just one big disorganised mess which is pretty much the case with all of the public sector. Do not even bother unless you really have to!

“no help whatsoever!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 30/09/2013

Completely inept, the staff at my local job centre offer no proper help or guidance to assist you to find employment. They seem intent on checking your 'job search' booklet with a fine toothcomb & basically seem to treat everybody who walks in as a habitual liar & scrounger!. STOP PICKING ON THOSE OF US WHO DESPERATELY WANT TO WORK & PAY OUR WAY!!. Woman who works on reception desk has a terrible attitude, looking down her nose at jobseekers like me as if we're something she just stepped in. Hmmmmmm, lets compare educational qualifications, knowledge, intellect, experience, practical & mental skills, keyboarding speed & arithmetical abilities & find out who should REALLY have the right to look at the other like a piece of dirt, shall we?!!!!.

I can only agree with your comment. Yesterday was my first visit at the job centre, since I've moved to the UK more than 15 years ago. I am originally from France. I have a degree, have always worked, never claimed anything, paid my taxes, and as I was a high earner (until the company I worked for, shut down, making us all redundant in the process) the amount of taxes I paid in was a considerable amount each year. Yet, on my first visit, I was made to feel like a total loser, was accused of lying just because I genuinely had no idea how this process works. To make matters worse, I was sent a letter from JSA to confirm my job seekers allowance, but it turns out this was sent to me in error. Is this my fault? I don't think so. Their incompetence should not be considered as an error of mine.
This whole situation made my blood boil and to be frank, it leaves me with no desire to pursue the JSA - it's peanuts anyway as who can live on such pittance you wonder? That said, I shall make my utmost effort to ensure I get something from them, for all the years I worked, contributed towards this country, and just out of principle.
I am still fuming, and can only hope I'll find a job soon - I really want to get out of this dark abyss which is after all, no fault of mine.

Hello Millerk. I completely sympathise with your situation. I too have worked most of my adult life - 22 of the last 24 years - paid tax & N.I. & am fed up of decent people like us being tarred with the same brush as the scroungers. I would work tomorrow if offered something half decent. Surely its in the job centre staff's interest to get us all back into jobs asap yet they do nothing to properly help. If I were you I'd grit my teeth & continue the JSA claim. Although it isn't much, its at least something & you have earned the right to it.
Best of luck to you, I wish you well.

“Cambridge Job Centre Receptionist”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 18/03/2013

Cambridge Branch The receptionist staff are a complete waste of time. The 0845 team provides you with the information needed and what you should do. The Cambridge branch then say that the information is incorrect and that is not how things are done. So they point to the phones on the wall to speak to somebody about it. These are the same people who they just said don't know what they are talking about!

“Even worse is their online offering”

★★☆☆☆

written by mrgeecee on 18/02/2013

Their online system (now replaced by the 'Government Gateway') is even more depressing... I've applied for many jobs that I'm fully qualified for, and never had a single word of reply from any of them. I guess that's down to the recruiters (whether that's agencies or the end companies themselves) but it appears to be a complete waste of resources and job seekers' time. I've found the staff that I've actually seen there fairly helpful and willing to help (even though they have little scope) but really they're just there to tick boxes. What DOES annoy me is that they are very strict about missing appointments (for any reason) but I've often turned and found the person I'm booked in to see ISN'T THERE!

“Not Fit for purpose - the ultimate understatement”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 09/05/2012

Jobcentre plus is a 100% not fit for purpose extravaganza of the worst kind of possible poor service and maladministration. Moreover its hidden but deliberate strategy is to target the weak and vulnerable for 'sanction' in contravention of human rights. Instead of helping those who need assistance (its alleged purpose) as a public service , there 'for' the public, it instead actively seeks to cause as much pain and frustration as possible, as if commissioned by Lucifer himself. Staffed by some of the most supercilious, incompetent, insecure, power tripping little insignificant worms, sniveling little maggots of the 'civil' service, it bears no relation to anyone remotely experienced in recruitment. By working against the public interest in such a wholesale way they destroy community and perpetuate crime and desperation, promoting depression and helplessness. And the thing is, the ultimate insult, these staff idiots are so deluded they actually think they are doing something useful, which in itself is the pinnacle of patronising. The very shame of these losers tarnishes any concept of common decency.

agreed wholeheartedly, backed up by a complaints dept called the independent case examiner who can take up to a year to investigate the complaint and still call it done in a reasonable time!

“The 'wonderful' Job Centre Plus”

★☆☆☆☆

written by ChocolateCookie on 14/03/2012

Since signing on last October I found it a 'wonderful' experience at the Job Centre Plus and look forward to my fortnightly visits - NOT!!! Initially when first signing on, there was an issue with my Job Seeker Allowance payments. As I was never told by my advisor about this on my visits, when I didn't receive payment into my bank account 2 weeks after my first visit I called their head office where I was informed that I hadn't made enough national insurance contributions. I have been working since I was 17 years old (34 years old now) and since late last year this is the longest period I have ever been unemployed. When I was working, I had plenty tax and NI 'contributions' taken from my pay before I'd even received my pay slip. So on my next visit to the Job Centre I demanded to know exactly what the problem was, where they explained that I needed to send my 2 P60 forms to the Job Centre Plus Head Office, as there were issues regarding those 2 tax years(2008-09 & 2009-10). So I posted my original P60 forms to their JCP Head Office in Glasgow by 2nd class recorded delivery as requested, which were then delivered and signed for 2 days later (11 Nov 2011). Some time after I was called by a guy from their Glasgow Head Office handling my file confirming I am indeed entitled to Job Seekers Allowance and the back logged payments will be due in my account within a few days. Great!! As the issue of my JSA payments was now resolved I was expecting my original P60 forms to be returned back to me. January this year, I called the Glasgow Head Office again to find out. Only to be told by the same guy handling my file that he had never received my P60 forms sent. Turns out he used an in-house HMRC database to check my 'contributions' using my NI number. So it wasn't even required for me to send my P60s in the first place!! I am hopeful I will be successful in securing a permanent job soon and when I do, I hope I NEVER have to deal with the 'wonderful' Job Centre Plus again! That place and the people that work in it are a waste of resources and thought!! And I'll take great pleasure in raising a major complaint. As my P60s I can never get re-issued and if the HMRC were to ever contact me asking me to provide these forms. They are not going to accept photocopies. Plus its worrying to know that someone signed for it, but was never sent to the person handling my file. For all I know someone could be using my NI number, my name and address(from my original payslips, some of which I had also sent)fraudulently.

Job Centre Plus Vacancies

http://www.jobcentrejobvacancies.org.uk/Job-Centre-Plus-Vacancies.html

Most countries in Europe have been struggling with unemployment and getting suitable job opportunities for the unemployed. The public service employment services were seeking to improve the chances of low income and unemployed people to get suitable placement in the yester years. The public employment agencies came together with benefits agency to form what is now called job centre plus. This is a service that is funded by the government and is offered free of charge to persons who have been through a rough patch such as low income or loss of employment as well as unemployed people. The aim of Job centre plus is to bridge the gap between the labour market and the employers to create an easier process for people to access opportunities.

The Job centre plus not only provides employment opportunities and benefits but also gives the unemployed people other services such as CV writing. They also guide job seekers on how to access unemployment benefits and advice them on which ones they qualify for. This goes a long way in ensuring that the lives of people who are unemployed are much more fulfilling as the process of looking for a job can be really draining. Employers are able to access the job seekers through the job centre plus online websites where they can upload the jobs that are available to the market.

There has been a lot of challenges for the Job centre plus as most employers do not consider government employment agencies as a good source of the cream in the market. Thus it is very difficult to penetrate the labor market as a government agency, all the same they have managed to secure jobs for a lot of people and the model remains enviable in the whole of Europe and other countries. The advantage of Job centre plus is that people who have put a lot of effort into looking for job opportunities are able eligible for benefits that enable them meet certain obligations that they have as well as just making life bearable as job hunting can be a very discouraging process.
You can contact job centre plus for a variety of reasons ranging from benefits to loans and grants and primarily anything to do with unemployment benefits in the UK.If you are incapacitated due to an accident or illness and are unable to get a source of income, then job centre plus will be able to assist you by providing the benefits available to your specific needs.

This is a win win situation as the government through the job centre plus strives to reduce the level of unemployment. Assisting individuals in job searching goes a long way in ensuring that the demands of the labour market are met and that there are no vacancies left unfilled. Traditionally they have been known to give jobs to the employed, now the focus is on the unemployed. Anyone can be able to apply for a job through job centre plus either online or calling.

I was told that they would contact me regarding the date i have to next sign on. I phoned twice and was told my personal advisor would get back to me, so far no reply. My personal advisor has not idea about the changes in the rules regarding lone parents. I keep getting conflicting advice from everyone at my local jobcentre plus office which happens to be Clapham Common in London. They are also rude, when i query any information they are rude and impatient with customers. Incomplete information on my file caused by their staff is making my life a nightmare, i am scared to complain in cause they make my life worse. I am 51 years old and they treat me like if i were a child, i can't stand this any longer and i am feeling more suicidal due to this extra stress which is affecting my already vulnerable state of mind.

The Clapham Common Jobcentre is worse than useless. They are racist idiots in there. I am a white middle class man and I was totally victimised. The one helpful employee in there witnessed the harassment I received and told me I should complain about the treatment I received. I did complain but this was pointless because the employees I complained about lied.
An example of the appalling treatment I received in there was having to wait for over two hours despite turning up on time for my appointment . Another example is my benefits being stopped because I refused to apply for a job as a social worker. My former career was as a stockbroker and I had no qualifications to be a social worker. The fact I was applying for lots of other jobs was totally ignored.

“Poor service, unbelievably rude and unhelpful staff,...”

written by Tuna Sandwich on 20/03/2011

Poor service, unbelievably rude and unhelpful staff, and little real help towards finding a job. I had the temerity to make a complaint and found the manager dealing with it to be the most obnoxious person in the place. A perfect Orwellian nightmare, the only real purpose of this place is to provide employment for its own hopeless staff.

I would like to say avoid at all costs but, of course, if you are unfortunate enough to be unemployed you don't have any choice but to put up with what these appalling people decide to throw at you...

Note to Mr. Cameron: Please close down this ridiculous, process driven, self-serving backwater of a public service and use the money to help people that really do want to work find proper employment.

written by anaita on 14/02/2011

Terrible experience i had when i went to register as a jobsicker after been redundant . Not a friendly place !!!! Wandsworth branch , next to the shopping centre .
Patronizing lady on the second floor with purple mascara on her eye lushes, small , dark hair. She spoke and directed me like i am a foreigner , and like i don't understand english...i am british by the way !

then on the third floor i had to wait for my turn to be called to register. While waited on the sofa...i withnesed terrible attitude from a black gentle man ,sitting on the right side . He was one of the advisors. He turned down one old man...and said that he was 4 min late (9.24 ), so ha had to come back at 4.30 ! then he had no one any way ...he was just free , sitting there and chating very loud ,like he is very important person ! didnt stop talking as long as i was waiting to be called. Other staff members were just siting and chatting ( 2 black old ladies)...even though, i noticed that the security man(tall english man in his 50th) told them to be a bit quite. The hole athmosfere was like a mess....you wont even see the difference who was the jobsicker and who was the staff . i hope i wont need to return there....and i will find a job asap !

“Job Centre's or Job Centre Plus as it's called...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Mastermind123 on 13/02/2011

Job Centre's or Job Centre Plus as it's called nowadays have gone to the dogs and are completely useless, the people that work in them now are largely made up of not very competent staff who are not really interested in whether their clients get a suitable job or not, all they care about is getting rid of people off the figures as quick as they can so they look better and appear as if they are finding jobs for people.

I lost my job last year and had been in employed in the same place for 10 years, before that when I had to sign on for a while and look for a job, the Job Centers weren't that brilliant even then but the one redeeming feature they had was that they acted as a go between you and the employer and they made that initial call which is important, because sometimes and often, when you lose your job it can take a while to get back in gear and get full confidence back so I often found that them making that first call helped.

Nowadays, they don't even do that, you select a vacancy from the touch screen, print it out and apply yourself, either by way of sending your CV via the employers email or you ring them yourself, so what's the point in the Job Centre Plus when you can do all that yourself without even going into the place?.

I therefore conclude that the only reason these Job Centre Plus's exist now is for the sole purpose of covertly harassing clients into getting off the unemployment figures and if they have to eventually, they will find an excuse to stop peoples benefits so that they are still taken off the figures, either way they will call it their job "done" and the Government as Governments have often done in the past can then use these figures to boast about how unemployment has "gone down" under them .

Much of the way Job Centre Plus's subtley harass their unemployed clients IS because of Government pressure on them to make the figures look good, they have always done this but now it's even worse than ever, so Job Centre Plus is not where I would recommend anyone to look for a job, much better off looking online or in papers, when I do eventually get back to work it will be no thanks to Job Centre Plus, in fact, without their interference in getting me applying for unsuitable things and wasting my time I would have been able to find a new suitable job much faster, they are more of a hindrance than a help to me and to many others.

“. I applied for job seekers allowance after graduating...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 25/08/2010

. I applied for job seekers allowance after graduating from university. I arrived back home, there were no jobs and I couldn't afford my medication. I applied over the phone, the woman who called me clearly didn't want to speak to me, she huffed and tutted her way through the "interview" (as she called it) and made me feel worthless.

2.They asked me to arrive at the job centre at 9am for a meeting with a personal advisor, all customers were left standing in the rain until 9:30 until the security guards opened the door, we were then herded (like cattle) to another area where we were told that we'd have to wait until further notice because we were late and the next appointments were arriving.

3.I was sent by the jobcentre advisors to apply for jobs that were advertised on their website, some were fine, some vacancies had never existed or were out of date and resulted in an awkward discussion between myself and the manager of the place I'd been sent to.

4. They aren't interested in you as a person, in my opinion they're more concerned with figures. I'm trained in science, they were sending me for cleaning jobs because "having ajob in science isn't realistic" I was then rejected from the cleaning vacancies because I was "overqualified" instead of listening to me and considering my strengths they blamed me for not trying hard enough to get a job. I filled 2 of those little books they give you in one week....I am definately trying!

5. They brought me in for a lecture on how to find a job, I went in thinking it may be useful, I left feeling patronised. The hour lecture was spent teaching us how to type "job vacancies" into google. The staff look down on you, treat you like a child and make you feel worthless.

6. I was actually mocked for having got my degree in science. I was also told that I should travel out of my county to look for work, they weren't interested in the fact that I can't afford to travel for 4 hours by bus per day.

7. This "matching team" they try to sell everyone on: I was told to expect a phone call from that team so they could help me with CV's, applications etc,....3 months and a lot of chasing later I still haven't heard from anyone.
In fact, even though I haven't found a job I am signing off. The service is no help what so ever. Everything I've done in my job hunt has been done by myself with no help from them.

written by BMG on 06/08/2010

No stars really but option not available. I went to JCP full of hope and came away depressed and disappointed. No effort was made to 'help' me find work or to advise me on how to search for work. Follow up 'jump through the hoop' visits to ensure I get some money are worse - I am asked if I am available for work and told to sign the form. My efforts to find work are at best glanced at and I am offered no encouragement. Next time I may just ask if I can have one of the cushy numbers that seem to be available at JCP itself. The staff seem only concerned about keeping themsselves in an easy job.

written by on 04/05/2010

My experience is based on the Wembley branch. In terms of helping you to find work to say they are bad is almost irrelevant since they do not 'help' in anyway. The biggest issue with the system is the 'one size fits' all mentality.

My experience of the staff has varied; a handful are very hard working and try to make a difference but a number of staff evidently resent their job and so behave in an unprofessional manner. If i'm honest the only reason for the 1 star is due to the two very buxom beauties that work there.
