“Be careful with PURE plastic surfaces”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 228Curtis on 08/11/2018

I bought a Pure radio that had a smooth surface that became very sticky after a while. I could not get rid of it with ordinary cleaning and the radio became very dirty because of it. Not sure if it was this model. My advice is to avoid any maker that use this 'easy touch' material as it seems designed to make the radio useless after a while. Always check this by seeing the model and be careful buying offline as you will not know the surface. Other consumer items are now having this coating applied to them.

“Looks good; sounds good; fails too quickly. ”

written by MarCam on 27/03/2016

I received the Tempus-1 as a present and was so impressed that I purchased one for my radio-loving sister. After a few years I was unable to get the volume to dial down to zero; the lowest volume I could get was too loud for late-night listening (for fear of waking others in the house) but acceptable for daytime listening so I persevered. Then, one day my screen just went blank but stayed lit up. No information, no buttons worked, no joy when plugged into laptop. My sister's Tempus-1 has gone the same way. This was not a cheap radio. I now own a very expensive, attractive block of wood with some buttons on it. There is no support on the Pure website - just a PDF download of the user manual; whoopee. I expect better. I shall not buy from this company again.

“Landfill fodder”

written by Braelynt193 on 14/03/2016

I bought a Tempus 1 and was pleased with its sound quality and features. So I bought Tempus 1 XT after 12 months. Both failed after a couple of years. The displays went first and then the sound. I feel cheated, given these were quite expensive radios at about £100 each.

“Pure Tempus 1”

★☆☆☆☆

written by triumpht on 16/07/2014

Well, where to start. These Pure radios really poorly built! I also have a Techniks DAB from Tesco and did a side by side comparison, and compared to the Techniks, the Pure is VERY cheaply made, I would say shoddy! The aerial lead is not terminated with a plug, the Techniks is. There are other things which annoy me about the Pure, difficulty in removing the panels from the outer case! To sum up, would I buy one? A resounding NO!!! They are overpriced and very short lived!! Spend your money elsewhere!

“Designed to fail?”

★★☆☆☆

written by Auntypure on 30/12/2013

Had a pure dab, evoke one. Lasted about 5 years then it suffered a loss of software meaning it was useless. Pure admitted that they could not repair it, offered a pathetic discount on a new one. Refused to confirm that they would be able to repair this one in the future either! So, it went to landfill. We bought a second hand Crown DAB via ebay. This is a much better radio, more sensitive, better sound and has been utterly reliable for 3 years. It cost £12, that's value unlike Pure. The problem with Pure seems to be low temperatures particularly when not turned on.Destroys the memory ( Cmos? ) so why Pure can't repair is just their marketing ploy. Never buy anything by Pure, tell your friends not to either.

“Maximum 5 years of Life - don't buy Pure”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 21/11/2013

I thought Pure was a good name in DAB radios, it was certainly not the cheapest at the time I bought my Tempus-1. I have owned it for 5 years with only modest use in that time and the blue display no longer lights up - unfortunately that means the time doesn't show and nor do any of the stations. Judging by other similar reviews this is clearly a design fault which Pure are not taking responsibility for. Unfortunately before this problem manifested I bought another Pure DAB for the kitchen, the Chronos CD, and whilst the radio is fine the CD is extremely tempremental. Moral of the story - don't buy Pure!

“Worst value for money ever”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 16/05/2013

Great functionality, easy to use, nice sound quality. After 5 years the OLED screen is on the way out and it switches itself on randomly during the night. I asked about repair and they said they couldn't and offered me and offensive 20-30% off another really expensive and unreliable radio. I spent £100 in good faith and bought an additional speaker for another £30. Very upset, will actively avoid anything Pure, wish I'd never recommended to anyone - I have a number of friends who have followed my choice.

I am just struggling to try to get my PURE Tempus 1xt working. After around 5 years when I loved using the radio, it now loses its presets and sometimes the alarm works and sometimes it doesn't - completely unreliable. At first I thought it was something to do with power cust but having contacted PURE, it seems it is some form of radio dementia.

I also was offered a discount to buy another PURE radio. I'm really not impressed - this is built in obsolescence with a vengeance. What am I supposed to do this this great lump of stuff if I buy a new one - send it for landfill? To the charity shop with a label on saying "you can listen to the radio but you have to tune it every time you turn it on, and don't rely on the alarm" ???

It should be illegal to trade in this way - PURE - sort this out

“Pure Tempus ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by DavidHJ on 01/04/2013

Dire. Has only lasted a couple of years then the software crashed. Very poor value for money; it cost over a £100. We also bought a Pure CD radio for the kichen, it has a ribbon style aerial. Reception is very variable. It also cost £100. No more Pure in this household: the brand is now toxic in my opinion .

“Appalling build quality”

★☆☆☆☆

written by mstclair68 on 11/02/2013

The aerial doesn't stay up. the display has gone dark. The volume control doesn't work. This radio is ideal if you never use it. If, however, you have the temerity to switch it on and listen to it then it will start to break up immediately. DAB stole a march in the DAB world by producing expensive products early on. Never buy one because it will give you endless frustration and regrets that you wasted your money. Funnily enough the advanced digital optical output is still working and I have it plugged into the digital input of my amplifier. This is the only way it is usable at present, but I don't hold any expectations that this situation will continue.

“Disappointing short life span.”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 16/09/2012

I received the Pure Tempus 1 radio as a gift about 5 years ago and was really pleased with the sound and look of it and the ease of use. However the screen has now frozen on the blue back light with no stations showing, no sound and nothing works when any of the buttons are pressed. This is so disappointing as I would have thought that something this expensive would work for years and years - not just five! I won't be buying another one as this is the second pure radio I've had problems with and although they sound great, they are frought with problems and not worth the money for the short life span they appear to have. Another piece of expensive junk for land fill :(

“Buyer Beware!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 31/12/2011

I suspect as with many people, when making a purchase, I generally make my decision based on price, maybe vendor's/seller's reputation & good Vs bad reviews etc. So if the bad reviews seem like just a few isolated cases or just a few unlucky people, I usually take a punt & go ahead with the purchase. A big mistake in this case. What I would urge people to do, before purchasing a Pure DAB radio, is to really read all the forums regarding the problems & also to pay particular attention to reviews that have been written atleast a couple of years done the line. Whether it's after 2, 3 or if you're Very lucky, 4 years down the line, problems ALWAYS seem to arise with these Radios. It doesn't matter which model you buy, they all seem to go wrong. Screen freezes accompanied by the buttons becoming unresponsive rendering them useless, are very common, almost ubiquitous in some cases. I bought my unit on 20-12-09 & after turning on this morning is was stuck on the upgrade screen. I was informed that removing the power cable & waiting a while before reattaching normally works but there was no change. I was also told to try a reset but as it's locked, pressing the buttons has no effect, so that wasn't possible. I've tried downloading the relevant firmware update from the Pure website, installing & connecting it to the PC but that didn't work either. I've experienced other little niggles like the clock being out & a dimmly lit screen but as the unit has only been used as radio & not as an alarm clock, it didn't bother me too much. In the 2 years that we've owned the radio, the longest it's ever been switched on, at any one time, was for an hour at the most & maybe once a week if that. The rest of the time it's been on standby. Surpirsingly I've had cheap Chinese products which have outlived this & at under a third of the price. It's not always easy to trust what you read on the web but I've recently found out that shortly after we purchased ours, each of my relatives who have also owned Pure radios, ranging from 3-5 years(varying models),have all had the same screen freezing issues. Just in different modes & on differing dates. AFAIC it's not just a few unlucky buyers, it's simply a unreliable product. Unfortunately as with most tech & appliances these days, despite it's cost, it will fail due to inferior parts, firmware or both. It's pretty much a waste of time contacting Pure's Support so save yourself the bother & buy another brand with a better reliability record like say...any other brand. :D

“Blue Screen Of Death after 6 years”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 04/12/2011

3 years old kept 'getting time' upgraded firmware (but only worked with XP PROFESSIONAL ON AN INTEL MOTHERBOARD all other OS and MOBO's failed also seemed to need usb 1.1 not usb 2.0) prob solved..........eventually . 5 years old screen lights up but no characters that's it. Power supply is putting out 18V not the 14.4 it says it should...maybe this has failed and fried it . Looks like I have a beech paperweight. Features were fine and sound was good however both these features are no firmly in the past !

Upgrade treat for me - I found it a bit complicated to set up but I'm not technical. The last thing I expected was for it to expire after 4-5 years. Meanwhile I'm back to listening to my old clock radio purchased for about £10 from Argos over 17 years ago. Progress!!!!?

“LCD so dim can't read it”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 10/08/2011

LCD so dim it can't be read so although the set still works it's about as much use as chocolate teapot!! Pure do not supply spares and won't consider repairing - so they say chuck it and buy another one from them - haha!! So if you are thinking of buying a Pure product bear this in mind. It's a shame 'cos the set is good otherwise.

Great radio. Ruined by shocking reliability. 2.5 years old and it's bricked. Time to throw a 200 pound radio in the canal. That can't be right can it?

Pure Support were responsive and sympathetic but at the end of the day - I still have to buy a new radio.

Will it be a Pure-3... I doubt it. Take a search online, I am not alone. Buy this radio only if you feel lucky. Pity, because in all other respects it is great.

written by on 26/03/2010

It's interesting that all the positive reviews are from people who have only recently bought this Pure Tempus-1 digital radio. We have had this radio for almost 5 years but it has just suddenly stopped working - only a blue light display comes on. I phoned the 'Pure' Customer Service line and was offered a raplacement for £60. All very disappointing and this was originally a replacement 'upgrade' for not one but two 'Evoke' radios which broke down one after the other within warranty. Appalling for such an expensive radio - don't be fooled by its stylish appearance!! Suffice to say we will not be going for the replacement option.

written by tcsr205 on 16/11/2009

I have exactly the same problem that many others seem to have. About 50% of the time, when I turn the radio on, it has lost all of its stations and presets. When this happens, and it happens a lot, I have to sit through a 2 minute auto tuning process before then having to manually tune in to the chanel I want. I don't even bother storing presets anymore because they will be gone the next day. Very poor.

★★☆☆☆

written by purlfrost on 27/10/2009

I've had the Tempus 1XT for justover 2 years and there now appears to be several issues with it, which makes it less than useless. It retunes itself, fails to come on at the set alarm time, loses all the radio settings. Very disappointing for a £100.00 radio. Problem is that I also have a Pure Move, which has also failed, but luckely under warranty. I therefore strongly question the build quality from this brand. They've offered me a £60.00 replacement for the Tempus. I told them it would be throwing good money after bad and declined their offer.

written by on 25/10/2009

A fine radio hampered by shocking reliability. I have had two in the space of around 4 months and both went wrong with the same problem, it totally packed and didn't do anything. I found this unacceptable as my mother had one simalar to mine(a pure) that did the same after just over a year. If yours works though it a brilliant radio due to it's fabulous display, excellent sound and good materials used to make the exterior. However due to appaling reliability i could not reccomend one. I now have a sony which looks simalar (but its cheaper to buy) and apart from the display has been every bit as good as the pure but way more reliable!

written by on 25/10/2009

I bought a Tempus three years ago and it has now stopped working, just a blue screen. I guess it will be out of warranty, but is a radio that cost so much really 'fit for purpose', especially as it has only been used for about six months of its life? Didn't old transistor radios go on for decades! Very disappointing
