I've noticed that recently I have started including more and more flaxseed in my diet, so I thought it was about time I wrote a review on it. Specifically, the Linwoods brand, as they are the best tasting and best value flaxseed that I have found on the market. This product actually won a gold taste award, which initially attracted me to them! What I like about flaxseed is that it is so versatile. You can sprinkle it on salads or breakfast cereals for an instant nutty flavour. Its also great used in baking as a replacement for flour! Nutritionally, the product speaks for itself. Its high protein for a plant based product (over 22g per 100g of flax is protein) as well as a great source of fibre (over 30g per 100g, so use cautiously!) as well as iron, thiamine and phosphorus. However, the stand out benefit of flaxseed is the massive levels of omega 3. Just 2tbsp contribute 7.2g of ALA. This is equivalent to around 2 salmon fillets! Price wise, the Linwoods brand is much better value than a lot of the others that are available. I paid £4.99 for a 425g pouch. With an average serving being about 15g, this represents great value for money. Why only 4 stars? If used too much, they can make food a little dry. I wouldn't recommend sprinkling more than 1 tbsp over salads, and you'll have to increase the amount of wet ingredients you use in your baking to compensate. It takes a bit of playing around with to get it right, but practice makes perfect!
