I have a Hawke Sidewinder 30mm 3-12x50 SR PRO IR SF Rifle Scope fitted to my Theoben Elan MFR .22 air-rifle and felt that I just wasn't getting the most out of that combination because my estimation of range wasn't very accurate. Eventually, after reading various reviews and opinions on internet forums about the laser range-finders that would best serve my needs, I opted to go for the Hawke LRF400 Rangefinder.
I chose this model because I'm only shooting at ranges between 25 and 75 yards (my air-rifle is not FAC) and didn't need a rangefinder with a range capability bigger than this. I wanted something that was easy to operate, had good optics, a long battery life, rugged and would stand getting a bit wet if I was accidentally caught out in a shower - not that I do a lot of shooting in the rain with my beautiful Elan! Most of all, it had to do accurately what it was designed to do - i.e. measure range!
Having arrived at the model I wanted to buy, the next task was finding the cheapest place to buy it. Uttings Outdoors came up in a Google search and offered the scope at a very reasonable £104.99 plus £5.99 next-day delivery which was about the cheapest place of all the sites listed. I ordered from their website and it arrived the next day! Brilliant!
For its first outing, I have a tree at the end of my garden which is a favourite spot for wood-pigeon, grey squirrels and magpies and which I always estimated to be 35 yards away. Imagine my surprise when my new Hawke rangefinder told me it was only 28 yds! I had to take a tape-measure out to confirm that this was true. The tape measure said 27 yards, 2 ft 6 inches. Not bad! The same went for other often-used distances which I had been always under or over-estimating. I have now re-zeroed my rifle scope to 25 yards very accurately using this range-finder and my success rate at using the rifle at different ranges has greatly improved. I was able to check the rifle scope's range graduations against the rangefinder's readings and found things to be remarkably accurate. The optics are very clear and I find it hard to find anything I don't like about this rangefnder.
Of course, I can't compare it to any other rangefinders as this is the only one I've bought but value-for-money, quick service from Uttings and for a no-nonsense, does-what-it-says-on-the-tin laser rangefinder I have to say I am very satisfied with the Hawke LRF400.
