“The 90th Birthday Discount Con”

★★☆☆☆

written by hzv5wk on 24/07/2011

Visited the Gatwick showroom attached to the distribution warehouse after printing off a 90th birthday discount voucher for 15% off closthing and accessories.

The store allows any item in stock at the warehouse to be collected, you just fill in the form and 5 mins later it appears. That is the theory.

The collection counter is staffed by a bunch of teens who spend more time laughing and joking with each other than serving customers. Despite 4 staff standing there and only 1 serving, I was ignored for several minutes. Eventually I was served and my order for 4 tubes and some accessories was put through the system. After 5 mins 2 tubes arrived. No accessories and no sign of the other 2 tubes. Another 5 mins and the accessories arrived. Still 2 tubes missing. The guy serving me left the counter and eventually someone else decided to try and help. A battered and incorerct tube appeared which I rejected. After 35 mins I gave up and said I would go with what I had.

Along with the 2 tubes, I had a crud catcher, some specialized gloves, hummvee 3/4 shorts and hummvee trousers. Only the shorts & crud catcher got reduced 15% by the 90th birthday voucher.

I queried it and was told it only appied to a small number of products that were sold at the RRP or, as the guy put it

  • Clothing & accessories total £130

"about 1% of the stuff in store". Voucher said it applied to full priced items. Gloves and trousers showed no indication of a reductionin proced. The only price on them was the one I paid but because this was allegedly less than the RRP (how am I supposed to know whatthe RRP is) the voucher did not apply.
