I visited the Barnsley Pets at Home branch as I wanted a wormer for my dogs (2 Alsatians & a Jack Russell). Drontal Plus is about the best but is a prescription medicine and is kept in a secure cabinet. I informed a staff member (who turned out to be the manager) that I wished to purchase some Drontal plus.

When he arrived with the keys, he asked me what weight were my dogs. I said between 20 – 40 KGs. To which he responded, I need the exact weight to which I stated that two Alsatians were 30KG each and the Jack Russell was 10KG. I could not believe my ears to what the manager turned around and said next. “I don’t believe you, because your first answer was too far apart”. I responded and said when you first asked me, it was in general terms and it was only when you specifically stated that you (the manager) required the exact weights that I provided the 30KG figure.

This manager refused to serve me the item despite my protest at being called a liar and explanation that I have wormed my dogs for years.
I called the store head office to formally complain and despite been a large organisation could only speak with a member of customer service. I am still awaiting a call from the area manager. That will be an interesting call because when I went home and went on to the Pets at Home website. It allowed me to order the worming tablets and only wanted to know the “approx.” weight of my dogs. This is a total contradiction to what the manager in the store had inferred. Whilst I understand that caution is necessary with prescription drugs, I will not be called a liar to my face.

I have shopped at pets at home for years but will never step inside their store again.
