“Enabling of contact with distant relatives”

★★★★★

written by Rory482 on 24/05/2018

Having been researching my family history since the late 1960s I have used a variety of research sites. However, this year is the first that I have used FindMyPast which, through access to the 1939 Register has allowed me to find and contact relatives in England of whom I new little about. Through these contacts I have been able to add further to my family history; and, I have been able to provide them with all the information I have found about the family in England and Australia. Historical photographs have also been exchanged which has further enhanced the experience of family history. There are times where I find getting rid of unwanted hints a little frustrating but overall FindMyPast has been well worth the investment.

“Second Year and Counting !!!!”

★★★★★

written by BruceJoyce on 08/05/2018

We are now in our second year with FMP and have been pleased with the ease and speed in which we have been able to progress. Everything is so easy to understand and there are so many avenues to explore, we have no regrets whatsoever, plus we are learning so much about our ancestors.

“Extremely useful site for all family historians”

★★★★☆

written by BruceUrquhart on 15/04/2018

I love the fact that you can find your ancestors who were around in 1939 and the occupations they had at that stage. After 1911 it can be so difficult to trace some people and it's certainly helped me solve problems. I also love the newspapers that I've found invaluable. I only have the Uk subscription but as most of my family were born and remained in the area that's enough for me. All the other regular records are available, all the censuses which we all need. Sometimes other sites have records which are not so accurate.

“Very good site.”

★★★★☆

written by UnkS70 on 14/04/2018

FindMyPast is an easy program to use. If anything, they throw too much information, too quickly at you for novices. But, if you have the time, inclination, and dedication to organize and follow it all, it is a GREAT site. Like any program, the more proficient you are with a computer, the more you'll get out of this site. Study a good book about ancestry research and how to organize it, then get plenty of the recommended forms ready before you begin. As with any ancestry program, absolute accuracy is nearly impossible to verify - especially once you get into the 1700's or older. However, if you want as much information as possible, with the least effort, FINDMYPAST IS THE PLACE FOR YOU!

“Easy to use”

★★★★★

written by Karina483 on 12/04/2018

The search mechanics are efficient and, compared to some family histoty sites, easy to navigate. I have been able te extract a huge amount of data for the families that I am researching, using official records such as the Gro index, to validate my findings. Census returns are well transcribed. The 1939 register is indispensable, even if the transcription quality is sometimes poor. However, a bit of intelligent thought and lateral thinking allows you to get round even that. The family tree maker is esy to use and navigate, with the possibility to export a gedcom file. All in all I thoroughly recommend Find my Past.

“The past can explain the present”

★★★★★

written by AydinAguirre45 on 03/04/2018

As a newcomer I found the site easy to navigate. I love the way the family tree is presented and the amount of detail that can be attached to it. I am always impressed by the availability of census forms and the images of birth, marriage, death and military information which contain details that often lead me down another route. Since I subscribed the amount of records available has increased and I have discovered new facts that I had not previously known.

“Have found records not found elsewhere”

★★★☆☆

written by Sandersrp168 on 20/03/2018

Find my past is a fantastic back up website for researchers. I always use this website when I can’t find records elsewhere as its search engine is not as broad and unnecessary. From the 1939 register point of view, nobody can beat it. They need to improve search facilities, especially on marriage searches, to easily include spouse’s name. You can put this name under “key words”, but it’s not obvious to a newbie.

“A programme that works”

Worth it for the records alone. List of people on your site could be better. It is a bit of a nuisance . Still a good site to be for research, especially Ireland. I would recommend Find my past to anyone. There is no perfect programme but this is close.

“Easy to use”

★★★★★

written by Harris-Altej396 on 11/03/2018

I have been an amateur genealogist for many years compiling not only my own tree but also those of friends. I find this site excellent for diverse information not available on other sites, cross referencing information from various sources and also its vast quantity of online documents. I only use it for UK records at the moment but am thinking about updating my subscription to world wide records. This site, like most others sites, is easy to use once you have spent a few hours finding your way around. I would strongly recommend this site to both seasoned genealogist and those just starting out. But a word of warning - once you get started the bug bites you and be prepared to spend hours just trying to find one more thing before bedtime!

“Should be more geared to local history generally”

★★★★☆

written by heath4345 on 10/01/2018

Find my past is a great resource. Census information, wills and inventories, and newspapers, are particularly valuable to me. My only gripe is that it's geared to finding out about people rather than places. I am signed up to Find my Past to assist in my professional research into sites and buildings. Obviously, people come into that as well, but I look at places first and the people next. While I appreciate that Find my Past has been evolved for geneologists, the way records are accessed could perhaps bear local historians more in mind.

“I like Findmypast best”

★★★★☆

written by RishiSmith365 on 21/11/2017

On the whole I like Findmypast, and I feel I can trust the results that come up. They have more and more original images which is brilliant, and the monthly subscription price is good for what I want (Britain before 1900). I find the new site less easy to use and a bit slower as you have to uncheck one search criterion (e.g. parish baptism), wait for the site to reload and then check another criterion (e.g. parish marriage) when you want to swap from one to another. Also I would REALLY like to have search fields for father's christian name and mother's christian name when searching for baptism records ... at the moment I put a father's or mother's christian name into the optional keywords field, which of course doesn't give the option of an alternative spelling, and you can only put a father OR a mother's name, not both. Having said all that, I still like FMP better than other sites - much less confusing and I trust it more. Love the newspapers too, have found loads of stuff I couldn't have found elsewhere.

“Mixed bag”

★★★☆☆

written by on 30/10/2017

I use FMP only because they give access to the 1939 register and also Irish records that (they claim) are not available elsewhere online. I can afford the full yearly membership but I don't find it cheap as I do need other memberships. The main reason for that is that FMP does not provide software for offline use on my PC - they only have the website. Also they do not do DNA matching. Therefore my main tool is MyHeritage and their Family Tree Builder software. Both sites offer 'hints' or record matches but My heritage is much more detailed and integration of data is better automated. It is a real hassle having to maintain both in parallel and transferring info from one to the other is a real chore.

They advertise access to census record and 1939 etc but dont tell u until you have paid that u have to upgrade to access these...I do not want to pay for one year. All info on one month membership is available free and in much more detail elsewhere. yet again disappointed with the dishonesty of online sites.

“Easy to use and a cheap way to view multiple records”

★★★★★

written by HarrisonLeach8 on 14/10/2017

I use this site and another that is dedicated to only Scottish people. This site is good because you can view hundreds of transcripts before you decide which ones to follow up. The newspaper articles are good. I found the transcript of a court case where my ancestor was giving evidence at a murder trial! I like that they give you ideas to follow up on your family tree. I like that there is only one button to click if you want to use a more open spelling or derivative of a name. I would like it if all these sites were cheaper though because I’ve been doing a lot of research and it has cost me a lot of money.

“Why I use Find My Past”

★★★★☆

written by Olsonqi168 on 14/09/2017

I find Find My Past very easy to use and the search engine is much more responsive to my search terms than that of the best known company, where I usually find myself ploughing through loads of irrelevant and unasked for records. It has been particularly helpful in finding my Berkshire family, providing information that just hasn't been available elsewhere.

“Simple, easy to use site with excellent information”

★★★★★

written by Ogdenyl6 on 04/09/2017

I found the site very easy to navigate and the information available sometime exceeded that of its current rivals. The only downside that I can find is that of scrolling through the displayed tree and having to use the scroll bars at the edge of the screen. It would be much better is you could just grab the screen anywhere and move it.

“Hooray for Censusreturns!”

★★★★☆

written by on 10/08/2017

Old family papers are the best starting point. Diaries, letters, even from one old lady in Victorian times to another. Names, addresses. write them all down. Then: go to the census, find out whole families, where they lived. From there backtrack to parents, seek children, aunts, uncles, etc. getting answers to your questions is fun, like reading a thriller! I was rather disappointed in the 1939 register though.

“Recommend this site”

★★★★☆

written by AliviaClark on 16/07/2017

Love seeing the images of Censuses, as well as transcripts. 1939 is very interesting but can be somewhat daunting if you are searching Wales in particular Teams are very very helpful and always there for you, and send you emails of their results. I am registered with the Findmypast.co.uk and because I am viewing from Australia the list keeps referring to World, with excess and not required sites, which can be annoying at times.

“A wealth of information”

★★★★★

written by YeseniaCasey on 25/05/2017

Census, birth, death & Marriage records - all tell a story of family history. But then there are newspapers that bring that history to life. All are easy to use and your searches aren't restricted. The fee paid is well worth the information that you may uncover and it is all so fascinating to discover. Basic website that is not confusing to follow or find certain links. A lot of fun and well worth the time and effort to research what I wanted to.

To those who have commented on the Data Sets that FMP have and are adding as a positive, I would ask you do you actually trust the results that the new site gives you when searching?  No matter how many unique data sets FindMyPast will have now or in the future, if you cannot trust that the search results are correct then how can you say it is still a good site for genealogy research? The new site does NOT give consistent results over a large number of their data sets. In fact some searches are downright misleading and wrong (0 results when in fact there should be many results). Also features from the old site have been proved to have been removed from the new site. So yes, the current score is NOT a true reflection of the new "improved" site.

Thanks for answering this question.

I have found it frustrating learning how to use the new "improved" site but have to advise that with perseverance I have been able to discover new family history facts and data that I did not find on the old site. I am, however, concerned that on separate occasions (sometimes on the same day and sometimes on different days) I may enter basic details about a particular ancestor and the results found are not consistent. It is extremely frustrating to be faced with a "0 results" page when in the old version a whole raft of results would have been produced. Sometimes BMD details are provided but not census details when both these and other information was previously held by FMP. Diligent re-entry of the data with minor changes often finds the missing information but on the old system there were usually very satisfactory results on a single search. I am a great fan of FMP over all the other sites and have been using it almost since inception. Hopefully the current inadequacies of the new site will soon be resolved and allow me to continue to recommend the site to others.

I did state a truthful response. I rated it only 2, because of it failing to be user friendly, but the content I always rated highly. I also said that we need to send questions to the FMP team, who will get the general idea that we the subscribers are not happy with the new design. I always maintain, that sites can be improved, but as I previously advised that I have only had a couple of tries and admit to being very frustrated. Until I have to do more research, then this is the best answer I can give. I do agree that the site has been changed and not for the better. If it isn't broke, leave it alone. However, as regards to trusting the data, well, it is a known fact that all information has to be proven to be correct and to have a minimum of three sources, which is why I subscribe to more than one site. Plus, all transcribed records can have incorrect entries, no matter the company that has performed the transcriptions. Should my future searches be useless, then I will advise the FMP team first, as I can only do research online, so without the transcriptions available online, I would come to a full stop.

The knack is to put in minimum data as a starting point. like just first name and surname with variants and see what comes up. If too many results, then fine-tune with a date of birth, bearing in mind that they can vary by up to 10 years from census return to census return. Or put in county if fairly certain of it. Still think better that Ancestry's thousands of irrelevant results. Just quirky layout needing improvement.
Report this content PennyASmith Written on: 14/04/2014
With regard to the existing data sets and those now being added, the transcriptions are only as good as the transcribers, and the original document should always be checked if possible. It is important to remember that sometimes those transcribing are working with difficult to read hand-writing from poor quality original records, spelling of names has not always been consistent in the past, different generations have spelt their names differently, etc. etc. You do need to try different spellings, wildcards, etc. It was easy to try different options with the old FMP system now we have the added complication of an inadequately tested new system when searching.
Report this content WoozleWife Written on: 14/04/2014
The updated site search method is frustrating to say the least. I have spent a couple of days doing a few searches mainly on census and parish registers. I am not happy at the layout of census results - while I like the ability to search all censuses together, I don't like that you don't see all the householders details on one page, you get the name of the person you searched for, their details and the householders are separate at the bottom of the page to then have to click individually to see the rest. Also why bother putting date parameters if the search just brings up everything anyway? The record sets FMP has to offer are brilliant and I will remain a subscriber but like others have said, they need to offer the old style site as an option while they iron out all the problems with the new one. I appreciate that sites have to move with the times and that they want to improve the experience and make it more user friendly, but so far it is mainly user unfriendly and this is not going down well, especially if people are finding inconsistencies in results. I do not like that you cannot filter the birth marriage and death information down to parish register level, that filtering using the search if you put in the word parish - it just brings up 5 record sets. I am yet to try out some of the other sections but I'm not overly impressed at the moment. I have been subscribing to FMP for about 10 years now and although I will remain a subscriber, it needs to sort this out or I will be considering my options next year.

I know it can be very frustrating not to find any information that you are looking for quickly and easily. However there are always teething troubles with new systems which can, unfortunately, take a little time to sort out, also there may be some adjustments we, as users. need to make as well. But as yet I am not really able to make any further comment on the new site as I have not used it enough to make a valid statement.

I've been a subscriber for 4 years, used FMP as my main source and loved it, very occasionally referring to Ancestry for verification. Now I use Ancestry and occasionally look on FMP and The Genealogist (free trial). I don't have the confidence that I had previously that the results I get are as accurate as they were. Too many inconsistent sets of results following the same search lead me to question the reliability of the results I am presented with. This is no good for my personal research and definitely no good for my business as presently I cannot charge customers for information which I feel may be incorrect, misleading or missing. My customers trust me. Do I trust FMP? Not any more, especially after having been blocked from the feedback forum and the facebook page for expressing honest feedback - in a measured, non-aggressive way - and contributing to open discussion as to how we as researchers can best continue with our research whilst FMP sorts itself out. Trust once lost is rarely regained.

I have to say that I have not found searches, as you say, downright misleading and wrong. In my research I have been able to prove that some information I, initially, thought maybe wrong was in fact correct. How? I phoned another member of the extended family and they were able to clarify the matter. Having said that I must clarify that I have not used the new site. All my research was on the old format. I cannot see that the new will be less able to give answers. My own experience was simply that I might not have had one key piece of information and, of course, machines cannot think. If you are a member why not call FMP and speak to one of their experts. They certainly helped me. Sorry if you might not find these comments of help.

I performed simple searches that came up with the correct answers on the old system. I knew they were correct from existing family records already in the possession of and verified by living family members. On that basis I went on to do more complex analyses but only ever used the results that were verifiable and/or probable. On repeating these simple searches on the rehashed system I failed to find the records. I have decades of experience in searching computerised datasets. So no I do not trust the results. Of course it is not possible to say whether this failure is due to a remodelling of the datasets, or of the indexes to the datasets, or of the inept redesign of the search procedures. I have years of experience in taking responsibility for data quality on a Digital Archive of Datasets project. I am thus peculiarly qualified in my judgement that using the new FMP system is timewasting and risky and, for me, a waste of money.

In the past I always accepted that apart from the odd transcription error, in the main the records were accurate, although I always advise checking with original sources. Since the new site when on line I have been testing out searches and was appalled to find a document relating to my late mother which contained information that was totally incorrect. If these mistakes go unspotted we are leaving a horrendous legacy for future generations of researchers.

a very short answer, no I dont trust the results from FMP, that is if you get any results at all. The website is going down the tube fast, all they think about is adding new records but without any decent means of viewing either the new or the old records. Stay away, I wont be renewing my subscription
Report this content OldBrummie Written on: 14/04/2014
I too have experienced the "Zero Results" response and am truly confused by it. The only way round it is to reduce the search data to an absolute minimum. This means pages and pages of results (sometime thousands) which are nigh on impossible to sort through, especially if one only has a surname or no specific dates.
Report this content Phill2610 Written on: 14/04/2014
Well I've just spent about 5 hours on FMP website and am really upset as this has been a waste of time. Looking for a birth and a marriage and being given a '0' in both instanced. I entered the same data into Ancestry and got the results I was looking for. Having achieved this I went back into FMP to purchase the Certs as I have always done, but could not find the 'Link'. I then tried contacting FMP and they came up with an answer to my question and guided me to the Gov.com website where I had to search for the link to get the certs. What was in the old version was so much easier. I feel cheated with paying my subscription to FMP. Why change something that has always worked. I regularly used the Printer Friendly page to copy from to store information from the Census Reports. Now this is gone and its such a shame. My rating of this site - 0.5.

It seems that the "improved" site is not functioning as intended. Records I know to be present are returned as unknown. Also it is cumbersome and slow. All in all an "improvement too far" which sadly has proved to be over ambitious. However if you are lucky enough to succeed in finding what you are looking for there it is still a useful resource. Two stars only.
Report this content IMWR1997 Written on: 15/04/2014
I search mainly for one surname which is not a common one. On the old site I could search for all the deaths for that surname in one year, receiving a list which has never yet exceeded 16 names.(Six is about average.) On the new one I can do the same search - as near as possible, given the differences - and be told that there are 1,483 results . . . "More" is not always "Better". I wish this new site was an April Fool's joke.

Do I trust the data results? Yes. Do I like having to learn new ways of searching? Not particularly. But I'm like others in this, that we don't like change. However I accept that the old platform is a thing of the past, and I've been practising my searches to become familiar with the new order. There are still areas that I'm not comfortable with, and where appropriate I have made contact with fmp to give feedback. So far I have not had any instances where I could not replicate previous searches and results. I'd be inclined to give 4 and a half stars because there's always room for improvement, and I believe the fmp team are working on those improvements. My judgement will always be informed.

Using the Internet for family history was and is a great step forward and FMP has played its part in that success. The site has undergone a tremendous change and the new site has a lot of problems still to resolve but the content of the site hasn't changed. I think subscribers will have to be a bit more vigilant when assessing the result of their research - at times it will be a case of trial and error - at least for the time being.
Report this content grumpya Written on: 18/04/2014
All search results are purely a guide as to where to start looking. I have found the new site far more user friendly, I like the fact that I can change a detail of the search at the top of the page without having to exit and re-search for that detail. I find that it is quicker & crashes & freezes less than the old one too. The newspaper searches, which are the best and most useful part of the site, seem to be better than before. I find ancestry extremely frustrating as it throws up too many completely irrelevant searches yet the answer I am looking for with all the correct info will appear a long way down the list, while FMP seems to have managed to stick to the facts that I have inputted. I also like the fact it hasn't gone the way of ancestry in that it doesn't perpetuate other people's errors by assuming that if a large number of people have repeated a mistake then it can't be a mistake, FMP just sticks to the data. There will always be people who don't like change. I think many of these comments reflect that fact, and I think the score for FMP is reflective of the service offered & received. I'm sure the moaning will stop once people get used to it, I think it is far less clunky than the old site & actually found someone I didn't on the old site or on ancestry despite 30 years of looking! The way the search results are listed makes it much easier to pick out an individual even if they are somewhere you are not expecting.

Do you not think that the current rating on Find My Past of 4.2/5 is grossly misleading? The company itself states that the old site is gone forever and therefore the position now should be influenced only by comments relating to the new site, the majority of which are 1 star (2 star at best).

As far as I am concerned the web site is still an excellent site - the newer style interface (compared to the old one) might have some rather interesting styles/approaches, however the material the findmypast has on its databases is excellent and thus worth a really good score

Find My Past was an excellent site prior to the recent major changes and was well worth the high rating. However, since these changes I am finding it very difficult to use, incomplete, and slow. It is clearly a work in progress. To all intents and purposes it is a new site and the rating should start, as it were, from the date of initiation of the new site. But, I am an optimist and expect that FMP will eventually make the new site as good as the old one. It was certainly the best in my opinion. It was the gold standard for amateur genealogists like myself.

I completely agree that the rating of 4.2/5 is grossly misleading and its about time that was changed to reflect reviews posted after the 1st April when the new FMP website was foisted on to all of us. FMP are behaving in an unbelievably arrogant manner, talking down to its customers as if we are all idiots because we dont like their new format. However they maybe will sit up and listen when they find that subscription renewals will be sinking like the Titanic and their profits go sliding into the sea

My original question to the FMP staff was:- Why does the menu item "Search All Records" not search anything at all? The power of the old system lay in its NOT wasting time breaking things down into unwanted subdivisions. Someone should be fired for this and the old system made available in parallel until the individual renewal dates of all existing customers. They replied by telling me that they had tested it ( using the subdivisions) and got results back. Hence not grasping the meaning of my simple question. I shall post my subsequent comment in a further response here.

subsequent response to FMP It's the systems analysts who have got this wrong, not the hapless programmers now forced to tweak the wrong model. "Less is more" was the good advice provided by some earlier designer who knew what was required to get quickly on the track of something. The exact opposite of what has been perpetrated in this obliteration of a really good resource. There'll be money in it somewhere for someone, but they will not be getting mine. Sadly it's my loss, and that of the elderly people whose roots I voluntarily help trace. A couple of weeks ago I did this for someone whose family had once lived near me and who is now in residential care further North. Not only could I find her ancestors right back to the 1700s, but they turned out to have originated 2 miles from where she is now, and can all be found in the churchyard there. She has a very common name and there would be no hope at all of success like this using the current set-up. What a waste. I also searched for census records that existed on the old system and they were either not there or required some redundant criteria. I am not prepared to be an unpaid (paying actually!) diagnostician and intend to go to another search engine which works.

As always when an existing site changes, it takes a while to get used to the new one and to find your way around. I did not find it very user friendly, but, that is only after a couple of tries. I will still persevere as I have always rated this site highly, if nothing else for the content. If you are unable to locate records on this site, then you may find it on another and the reverse is also true. At present I would mark it down, as low as 2 star, simply because the new site design, fails to cater for the wide ranging technical abilities of the users (some with very basic knowledge and limited PC skills to computer wizards). However, the content would remain 5 star and it is worth taking time to learn how the site can work for you. The Findmypast team are extremely helpful and will try to respond to you and guide you to progress with your research. So stay with it, try it for a month and email them for help if you are unable to find what you are looking for. Maybe we will all have to do that until we understand how to navigate the site. overall, until I get used to the site I rate it at 3.5, for all the reasons above. It is extremely frustrating when a site changes and stops your research. Hopefully the new reviews will bring it to their attention.

Absolutely agree - can't find my original review now, but I've always rated Ancestry as superior and much more user friendly, and I reflected that in my reviews of both FMP and Ancestry. Like FamilySearch, Ancestry also brought in a new search, but allowed their users to fill out a survey and have since included features of the OLD search! AT LEAST ANCESTRY ARE WILLING TO LISTEN TO THEIR USERS! They also kept the old search going for many months whilst improving the new search - FMP hasn't learned from this. I cancelled my subscription with FMP just before they implemented the new search, but apparently, there's a forum where you can make yourself heard.

I am finding the new site confusing, I struggle to find exactly what I am looking for at present, I currently am unable to zoom in quickly to exactly what I want like I did with the old site. Would guess it will take a good number of months before I become as confident with the new site. Some more educating 'how to use' clips would greatly help. Meanwhile would only give it at the most a 2

I do not have a problem with the new website and still find it as easy to use as the old one. So I will continue to do my research on this site as I have done for over ten years. I would rate it as 5 star.

Sorry to use this box to contact the Review Centre - it probably won't get through to anyone anyway, but... I'm registered, and received an email asking me to answer this question - I can't remember my password, and sadly, when I get the email to reset my password all I get is a window saying that "The address is not valid" THERE IS NO WAY TO CONTACT ANY STAFF ON THE REVIEW CENTER ABOUT THIS! SO I THINK, AFTER GIVING A HELPFUL REPLY TO THIS QUESTION AS YOU ASKED ME TO DO, I'll have to stop using this site. I had to use the user name Jaygen2 and a new email address which I never use. If there's anyone out there - thanks for listening!

Hi, like Jenny Armour, I too have not been on the 'New' website, but will shortly be doing so as I have a lot of research to do on one family member. I have been with Findmypast for over 15 years and pay the full member subscription so I do not have to bother with 'Credit' and have found it to be an excellent site. I also subscribe to Ancestry.com and between these two sites have had excellent service. I find it a bit worrying with what jenny has said about her friend leaving..?? Is this because she/he was not used to researching on these sites, as this as a 1st timer can be quite daunting. Will therefore reserve judgement until I get on the 'New' site. Will do another review after that.

Yes the 4.2/5 is totally misleading and inaccurate. I would not even give the new site a 1 star for the following reason. There is information there on FMP but everyone I know has been unable to access it. I have had a subscription for a number of years but guess what when I tried to see exactly how many years my history was not available. Unless there is a radical change to the site I will not be renewing my subscription and nor will many other people I know.

The current site bears no resemblance to the old one, therefore only reviews after 1st April are relevant. The old site is allegedly history, so the old reviews may as well be discarded, meaning the real star rating is in the low ones. It is most unfortunate that FMP didn't understand what was so good about their user interface and chose to replace it with a system that is vastly inferior in design as well as being unfinished and untested. A very large number of people who greatly enjoyed searching on FMP on a daily basis have had their pastime ruined by possibly well meaning but ignorant website designers. The best thing they could do now is reinstate all the old search forms and result formats exactly how they were. They are struggling to try and add previously available features to the disorderly new format (some text boxes added this week are only there for appearances sake - they don't actually work) resulting in an untidy, inefficient and difficult to use, mess. Results are inconsistent and untrustworthy, you can't be sure the search system has found the right person any more; it often doesn't find records you know are there. Quite apart from the flawed design of the search process, there are myriads of small, unprofessional errors that really annoy experienced users such as the +/- years not showing, surname/forename boxes randomly interchanged and the dreadful spaced out multi-page layout of census search results. Primary school kids could have done a better job; indeed the huge type and double spacing suggests it was designed for kindergarten use. There are thousands of reviews all saying the same thing - what used to be a very good site has been ruined to the point where it is virtually unusable for serious research.

The current rating is a farce. As it stands now the new site is not worth the money we spend in subscriptions. It has been put into use before all the problems have been ironed out, the incorrect spellings of names seems to worse. This site is no longer attractive to serious researchers. After very many years of enjoyable researching using FindMyPast I shall be one of the disappearing members unless the old version can be made to run alongside the new one until all the problems have been sorted. I had already put in a review about the new site (which hasn't appeared as yet) saying that I am embarrassed to admit that I recently recommended FindMyPast to a friend, and have now told her that the site is no longer the useful site it once was. The searches are so much more cumbersome, the familiarity is gone. It was once my "go-to" site for family tree research, but I think now, that ease of use has gone forever. It should have been thoroughly tested prior to going live, but now they are merely fixing problems piecemeal, as their customers bring things to their attention. One star is all I would recommend, currently.

As far as the new site is concerned I find it confusing and nowhere as good as the old one. On the old one I could access all the information I was looking for just by searching all the areas at one go. Having tried to do the same thing on the new site find that it does not always work and I am left to start all over again. I feel that the new site is vastly over- rated at this point and myself would only give it 1star. Vic Stotten

The old search was an awesome tool which has now been put out to pasture and I for one will miss it. As to whether or not the score is grossly misleading I disagree. The records are still available and Find my Past are adding new records and so from that point of view the score remains unchanged or improves. However, the new search engine, (which as been in use on findmypast.com and findmypast.ie from the start)needs tweaking to get better results. The address search was far superior on the old option as was the refine search across the board. Would I still recommend Find my Past? Then the answer is yes. It just needs to iron out its teething troubles.

Yes I agree with you absolutely. The material is good when it can be found but finding it is so cumbersome that it is easy to lose the will to live going through all the filters.

Absolutely! Reviews should reflect the current state of the item or service being reviewed. The old site is now sadly defunct and currently, although the new site still has (probably)excellent content, it is very slow, has basic search filters missing and is not at all user friendly. Maybe in 6 months time they may have a good site again but FMP's customer service responses (like 'we have turned off the phones') and complete disregard of current subscribers complaints currently make it a 1 star at the most.

The biggest factor in any score has to be the data which is still of very high quality and growing in size and breadth all the time. In my opinion it remains one of the two 'must have' genealogy website subscriptions. The look and feel may take some a little while to get used to, but that would be the only issue.

I agree that the new version of the web site should be rated on how it now works and what it offers which in my opinion is still excellent value. It does need a different approach to find the best way of searching for the records you want and I have had to download Google chrome to see the census returns but I am looking forward to the new records which are going to be added throughout the year.

This is a very good point. Leaving aside the arguments over whether the 'new' site is or will be an improvement on the 'old' site, FindMyPast have stated categorically that the 'old' site has been retired, can no longer be accessed and is gone forever. Therefore reviews of the 'old' site have no relevance to potential users of the 'new' site as the two are completely separate entities. I think it would be fairer and much less misleading to separate reviews into those relating to the old (now dead) site and those relating to the new site.

The old site was worthy of the rating 4.2/5, but the new one isn't. I've been using ancestry and freebmd much more since findmypast changed. I don't understand why they've changed the site? If it's not broken don't fix it! The old site was so much quicker and easier to use.

I totally agree that the ratings should reflect the new site reviews only, by including the reviews of the old site and rating both sites together makes the current rating questionable at best.

I am sorry but I do not understand the question. If it means "do I prefer the new site over the old one", then I have to say the comment I made still stands - "If it ain't broke then don't fix it". I found the old site far easier to use and am having difficulties with the new site. My project is coming to an end so I will simply try to soldier on.

My first review of Find My Past was based on use of the previous site. No doubt the information is still as good as ever but the routes to finding this have changed so much as to make it much harder to discover the facts you need. Change is always unpopular and personally I find it harder to use the site. Whereas you could once home in on the section you wanted now you have to wander through a cumbersome broad field which may or may not get you to the same point. FMP has become unnecessarily complicated and tends to be slower. I am sadly considering ending my link to this site when my subscription runs out and will stick with Ancestry.

It is grossly mis-leading! It's all very well suggesting that the data they have is excellent, it's not much use if it's not accessible without unreasonable delays, crashes, errors and very poor search facilities. In my opinion, FMP has taken a major dive downwards in my estimation and this could cost them dear if it isn't resolved very quickly!!

Up to the new site unveiling I would have recommended FMP 100%. However, in line with many other users I consider it a retrograde step. Maybe you could try on Pay as You Go before committing yourself to a full subscription. I trust it will soon improve in line with many hundred requests from existing users.

Agreed - I' rate it 1-2* now. Searches far too slow. Difficult to search single data sets. No "printer friendly view" - I used this continually to copy and paste info into my family tree notes and sources. Unfortunately "New Search" on Ancestry is even worse - I've rated them 1* because their transcriptions are less accurate than fmp. It's a toss up which subscription I cancel first - I haven't the time required to negotiate the search functions on these sites!

Yes, it is very misleading. Problem with site at present is FMP IT people, who do not appear to be genealogist, have completely redesigned search function and rewritten reports without reference to users, thrust it upon us with inadequate testing and expected subscribers i.e. paying customers, to accept the horrendous system presented. Paying customers resent this attitude and added to this FMP have not even bothered to utter the word "sorry" but continue to invite those same customers to suggest improvements as if FMP are trying to give something new. Maybe, once FMP have sorted out their problems, remembered their customers do have a choice, and used the word "sorry" (which is long overdue and now seems very inadequate), maybe the site may get better. Unfortunately this debacle will leave a nasty taste for some time to come.

In response to the rating given to Find My Past I would like to say I have only commented on the old site which I found worked really well. As yet I have not commented on the new site as I have only used it on a few occasions since the change over. However like any new system it will probably need time to bed in and hopefully anything that does not work as it should will be updated. Most other sites are updated an a regular basis

For several days I was unable to get on to the site at all, and when I did get on searches took so long that they timed out. Having said that, it is slowly improving, but I do not think it is as use-friendly as before and would now only rate it 3/5. It is no longer my first choice of site for research

There is no valid criticism about the quality of the records held by FMP. It has been a very valuable research site. However, without user-friendly and reliable tools to find the records, they end up as questionable at best and next to useless at worst.

I found the old website clunky but it had some useful info on it that was not available elsewhere. the new site has the same & some more new stuff so from the point of view of the info available how can that be worse? Most people don't like change so there are bound to be moans, plus if people are happy with the new site they won't normally bother to go out of their way to leave a review unless asked, moaners will go out of their way, you only have to look at hotel review sites to know that that is true. The search is far better than it was, & streets better than ancestry. There is none of the problems created by user input data where one idiot puts in a load of rubbish then dozens of others copy it, which is what is gradually ruining ancestry as the search results are so influenced by users input. The new FMP is probably better for the more experienced researcher but I found a relative I had mislaid for 30 years this morning because of the way the search results are laid out. She never showed on the old format or on ancestry or some others but because the date of birth defines the order the results are presented on a simple search I found her. Give it time and hopefully the moaners will vote with their feet & the reviews will pick up & reflect the true quality of this site. Most people who are happy with the new one will not go and revue it for a second time if they were happy with the original site as they are probably busy using their free time to persue their hobby rather than writing reviews.

Quite frankly, I think that the rating for the new site should be 0. I spent over a week trying to do an address search for the 1881, 1891, 1901 & 1911 UK census'. The only one I got a positive response to was the 1901 census, the rest returned 0 results. Having the names of two families from that census I went on to Ancestry and found one of those families there in the 1891 census at the same address. 0 result from FMP! Not only the lack of results was frustrating but the fact that one now has to waste time applying filter after filter to obtain the information that was readily available on the old system is also very frustrating. I also tried the new system out by redoing searches that I had previously done on the old system to see if I was over reacting, I wasn't. Again, the numerous filters made the whole process extremely tedious and time wasting. There is an old saying that perhaps they should heed, "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it." I am a seasoned researcher and have been a subscriber to FMP since 2008 and I have always sung their praises, up until now that is. I will not be renewing my subscription when it falls due next month. Dingdongdi
