“Been able to trace lots of family”

Written on: 11/05/2016 by WillDuncan484 (1 review written)

Despite knowing DOB's and other information, other services failed to acknowledge their existence. Within 48 hours of starting the 12 months free trial, I had managed to build the family tree fairly rapidly. A year on and I am still finding new relatives, the tree now has near 600 people on it. It is easy to use and a simple interface makes it easy to navigate and search. Only negative is that sometimes hints stay showing even though clicking on that person says there aren't clues. … Read Full Review

I'm sorry to query this review but how can it fail to be value for money if it is free? Many of us who have paid full subscription for years would love to know how the reviewer received a 12 months free trial when all that is advertised is 14 days. I think that Find My Past will be receiving many requests for 12 months free trial when this review has been circulated.

“Easy to use”

Written on: 01/05/2016 by CarlosDonahue99 (1 review written)

I spend hours on Find My Past and look at the FMP Friday email before I go to work! You may find the following hints handy if you are a starter - Always use the name variation box. If you are wanting to do a straight forward family tree start with the 1939 register and census years (1841-1911). The hints on the family tree part can get you mixed up so I don't use them. Middle names are really useful. Use the transcription as a signpost but make sure you open the original file. Even if the… Read Full Review

“Join Find My Past, They are brilliant”

Written on: 27/04/2016 by Ruth2607Howard (1 review written)

I joined find my past in October of last year (2015) .In no time they had found my maternal Grandmother,s family dating back to 1753. This included my Great Uncle who served as a machine gunner in the First World War he was 14 when he joined up & like many others he lied about his age, when died from his wounds he was 17. I am very proud to be His Great Niece & thanks to Find My Past I know where he is memoralised I intend to go there very soon. I would urge anyone who is thinking of… Read Full Review

“The best yet!”

Written on: 24/04/2016

I would say that though very much an amateur, I'm a seasoned user of genealogy sites and I've spent time with GenesReunited, Ancestry, and FindmyPast over the last five or six years. I'm completely self-taught and after a bit of experimentation, it's Find My Past that's worked best for me, primarily because I can download the original documents and save them to my harddrive (other sites don't necessarily permit this), which I simply cannot be without! I also find that FMP has the better… Read Full Review

I'm a bit concerned about this review as it gives the impression (in my opinion) that there are some things exclusive to Findmypast, when in fact they are also available on the other main site.

As far as Parish Records go, it's horses for courses. Findmypast has better records for Staffordshire - where Drayton Bassett is - than the other main site. Conversely, the other main site has much better records for Lancashire, Warwickshire, and West Yorkshire for example. Also their London records are very impressive and extensive.

However, you can go backwards and forwards (otherwise known as Browse) through the PRs on the other main site too, so this is not something exclusive to FMP.

You can also download documents from the other main site and save them to your own computer.

Family Search records are also available on the other main site. Family Search is a partner with FMP and uses their indexes in their free search, but direct people to a subscription service for the original images. The information is FMP's which it licences FS to use, not the other way around.

FYI, FMP can search up to +/-40 years - just click on the down arrow next to +/-2yrs and you get options for 0,1,2,5,10,20,40. Now this IS an improvement on the other main site, although FMP also used to do 3 and 4 which was even better - in my opinion.

FMP are also better value for UK records than the other main site, in my opinion, ie significantly cheaper.

There are pros and cons with both the FMP and other main site search. Both use fairly similar parameters, but their gazetteers are slightly different. (FMP can no longer do Wildcard searches on places of birth (apart from the 1911 Census) which is a huge loss and shows a lack of understanding on the information within records and how people search on their part.)

As a point of assistance, don't keep your family tree on any sort of subscription website. Use a standalone programme on your own computer as your main record. You can always upload the Gedcom to whichever site you want in order to take advantage of hints etc. You will only end up being held to ransom over your tree eventually - as many people now appear to be finding out from the other main site.

I haven't used the other site for 18 months or so, having moved to FMP then. I'm merely reporting my own personal experience. You may disagree, but my opinion is simply that - an opinion. I stand by my review. Maybe the other sites have changed since I last used them but when I was looking for a permanent home for my genealogy and trialing all the main ones, FMP was one of very few that permitted downloads.

I'm well aware Family Search licenses to FMP - and that is what I said. I use Family Search a lot, so it's helpful for me to be able to access FS records as part of my FMP subscription.

I had NO idea you can scroll down *past* the 5+/- years in search, though - thanks so much for pointing that out.

“Good, but not perfect”

Written on: 14/04/2016 by Gabriellav316 (1 review written)

I've been working on my family tree for about 6 months now. Ancestry had a good system with lots of images of marriage certificates and census, but by using the transcription supplied with Find My Past, the systems working in unison is my present preference. I was looking forward to the 1939 register, but now, having experienced it, there are many names blocked out and because the family members that i am interested in died after 1991, and i'm unwilling to pay to get these unlocked, I find… Read Full Review

“Terrific Genealogy resource”

Written on: 12/04/2016 by 458Flood (1 review written)

I would definitely recommend Find My Past...especially if you are researching UK genealogy. That is how I started, working on my husband's ancestors...but couldn't resist seeing what would come up on my own family, in US & Canada. Searches worked really well with good results shown. This is something I particularly don't like about Ancestry: either a bazillion results which have nothing to do with what limiters you entered, or no results… Read Full Review

“Updating Family Member History”

Written on: 10/04/2016 by Myers186 (1 review written)

I have a large tree on Ancestry and I had to find another family history system to provide me with additional family member history which was lacking in Ancestry. Also may I add at a cost which I could afford. THe info supplied on Find My Past especially with regard to Census details far surpasses that on Ancestry. I need Find My Past to especially update the history of my English ancestors not only with Census but also with the missing info on the spouses of my male English ancestors. Thanks… Read Full Review

“Find My Past really works for me”

Written on: 08/04/2016 by welshbookworm (2 reviews written)

When I first became interested in family history a couple of years ago, I took advantage of free weekends on Ancestry and Genes Reunited, then took out a basic subscription to GR because my sisters had family trees on there and began to create my own tree. Then Find My Past offered a free weekend early in 2015 and I was so impressed by its ease of use and flexible family tree and individual profile structure that I took out a one-year worldwide subscription and transferred my existing family… Read Full Review

“My go to search engine!”

Written on: 07/04/2016 by pmurrayreview (1 review written)

Having access to four very good search engines makes finding my family fun and rewarding. As one of the very best resources for English records Find My Past has often been the only family history resource with records to build and prove my family tree. Using the Find My Past search feature also allows me to filter my results to a reasonable number that can be reviewed without wasting precious time. For me personally, it would be nice to see more of the original documents rather than just the… Read Full Review

“Difficulty of accessing customer support”

Written on: 31/03/2016 by SierraCobb (1 review written)

I like the service and will elaborate on that when I can access it again. You see I seem to forget things sometimes and password information is one of those things. Yes I write it down but, despite my best efforts, I sometimes mislay the card or notebook in which the info is recorded. Yes, but that is not the fault of the service you say? It could be easier to remedy the difficulty via "findmypast" in my opinon. I had a free trial a year or two ago but opted not to take the service at… Read Full Review

“"I like what I found, but know I could find more..."”

Written on: 20/03/2016 by Evei439 (1 review written)

The search has been fascinating and finding family documents has been a fun ride. The disappointing point is that when I search for a document or go down rabbit trails on a name search I can not link it to a person and have that document inform the hints. I do appreciate the breadth of documents available; it is mostly intuitive but occasionally take some experimentation and time to figure things out. The system has struggled at times over the last month where it has struggled saving… Read Full Review

“Filling out my family story”

Written on: 05/03/2016 by vivienthomas (1 review written)

I am using a 6 month subscription to Find My Past to add details to a family tree started in 1979 and researched the hard way when you had to physically travel to your area of interest. The upside was being able to handle original documents and the downside was that there were very few name indexes so there was much searching and little reward. It is really great to use the indexes at Find my Past and almost always come up with a result even if you have to try several different ways of… Read Full Review

“An extensive and easy to use resource ”

I have been using for over a year and easily extended my family tree and that of my husband to the late 1700s, in most branches. The hints and advice are very useful. A lot of records are easily available and it gives a sense of satisfaction when you manage to overcome a dead end by trying a different approach to the search. Occasionally a glitch will occur on the tree so it is advisable to save it elsewhere as well as on this site. However the helpline is also quick to reply and sorts out… Read Full Review
