“Half price but not worth it.”

Written on: 20/03/2015 by bobjan1 (3 reviews written)

I took out a subscription at New Year for half the normal price and while it can work as intended, it often doesn't. The 1851 census frequently won't load pages, it won't move from page to page and when I complained about it there was a `promise` to fix the problem within 90 days. Wow, that's impressive - three months to fix a problem which shouldn't exist. As I write, the website is down and showing a picture of an impending shipwreck. How appropriate. I don't dislike `Find my Past` - I hate… Read Full Review

I know that one star is the minimum but I cannot read anything in your review that merits the second one. I am not being facetious, the star rating just seems high given the comments.

Hello,
I must have been in a generous mood for a change!
I did get the half price subscription and have been lucky enough to find some interesting snippets in the newspapers. However, everything about it is so frustrating that I certainly won't renew the subscription - even if they paid me £50.

“Balance review taking on more detailed research...”

Written on: 18/03/2015 by ChristinaHoward (1 review written)

A great deal has been written online about Findmypast's new search which was implemented in April 2014. It was not a good move on their part and they have striven to improve things, culminating in the release in the past few weeks of a new new search. However, no matter the technological achievements of this new search, it is rendered useless when more detailed searching is required sue to the restrictions of the use of Browse options for place names. The first problem is in the Search… Read Full Review

“Give it a go!”

Written on: 13/03/2015 by bigash1 (1 review written)

I've been on most of the genealogy sites and find my past is a good one although you have to get to know how to use them all. If you have some information about a family member it helps but there are ways with the bare minimum. If they are born before 1911 a useful way is to check the census records which usually go back to 1841 but there are records going back further if you look at record sets on the site. I find if you put in the bare information it brings better results strangely. finding a… Read Full Review

“Bringing the Past to the future.”

Written on: 13/03/2015 by Nylgram (1 review written)

I have had a ball using Find My Past!. It opened up the path to finding answers to so many questions I had about relations that could not be found easily on other websites. The site is easy to navigate. The ease of using the site at home when I want to is also a bonus. So many different records to choose from… Read Full Review

“Poor”

Written on: 05/03/2015 by Brendens457 (1 review written)

Since the site had an upgrade last April 2014 the site has been more than poor. They have now put a new things in place for the search and have to say that its still poor to use. Missing data, only producing double barrelled names on search results, for starters. Not only that if you complain on their Facebook page too loudly they ban you and effectively censor any complaints against them. Save you money and use Ancestry or try to find the records you want elsewhere… Read Full Review

Davetomlinson's Comment

Hmmmmmm! A "genealogical genius" who has "only been researching in the last 12 months". Puts my efforts over the past 20+ years in the shade.

FMP has a lot of record sets. Some of them are not quite what you might expect from the name e.g. "Churches & Religion" contains 2 datasets covering years from 1813 - 1889 from ONE obscure parish in Lancashire; "Yorkshire, Leeds, Burials 1895-1921" covers ONE cemetery.

The website used to be, probably, the easiest to use. They redesigned it and the interface is inconsistent. There are fields where you can use wildcard (* ) searches and some where you can only use their pulldown lists of entries. Some of those list run to dozens of entries and include misspellings arising from transcription errors ( one is Scotlanld). They have made some errors of defining how to transcribe fields one of which results in all children in the census marked as being x months (days or weeks) old are shown as being zero years. That might be an interpretation of the entry but it is NOT transcription. I could go on.....

“Rude customer service and bad business practices”

Written on: 20/01/2015 by redbaybound (1 review written)

I purchased a 1 month subscription to Find My Past on December 20th, 2014 that was set to expire January 18, 2015. Earlier in the day of January 18th I was able to search. However, by 6 pm EST I was told that my subscription had expired and that I needed to subscribe again. I contacted customer support at FMP to let them know that I had been erroneously shorted time and that I wanted to be credited for that time. The following is the response I received: "Good Afternoon, Thank you for… Read Full Review

I received a follow up email apologizing for the misunderstanding. It seems that FMP subscriptions expire 30 days after the exact TIME of purchase. The website showed only that it expired 30 days after purchase.

They have rectified the situation by very generously extending my subscription by 7 days.

Thank you Findmypast and I am sorry that I misunderstood the terms of the purchase!

“Appalling”

Written on: 08/01/2015

The website is almost impossible to search using a slow connection. Search forms do not load correctly and result in millions of results if they return a search result at all. The worst time to use the web site seem to me to be from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. in the UK. Newspaper searches just refuse to load despite waiting sometimes for several minutes at the above times. This is sad as the site has a wealth of records to access, the problem of pages refusing to load still hasn't gone away!… Read Full Review

“Plenty of records, easily searched with excellent...”

Written on: 23/12/2014

Plenty of records, easily searched with excellent search engines - good value for money. Only thing to add could be the ability to see matches between users trees to find other family members. I've ended up with a subscription to Genes Reunited as well, just to do this. Always worth searching around for different names, as the transcriptions can be wrong, albeit rarely. None of this has stopped me very quickly putting together a very full family tree using the website… Read Full Review

The site is still growing so I often get a message telling me my image or results are coming soon, but the site is easy to navigate. When I have gotten results, I have gotten good results and images are easy to peruse. Once the site is up and really running, it will be worth the visit. Parmesan's Response to heatherbrush33's Review

Written on: 06/11/2014

Growing yes because they are adding records all the time but if those records are added you should be able to search easily and view the image. There should be no 'coming soon' in it! The site has been 'up and running' for many years, only the new platform is new and that changed late March 2014 with a big fanfare of bigger and better and EASIER to use. That proved a false claim and 8 months later its still pretty much a mess and people are STILL being given free extensions to their subs, an admission by FMP that the site is flawed, good on em for doing that though.

Ema1251's Response to heatherbrush33's Review

Written on: 24/11/2014

I'm afraid you are under the assumption that this is a new site. FMP has been running for years and was the Best family research site by miles. They instigated a new platform in April which absolutely wrecked the site and despite being 7 months on, use of this site is still 'frustrating' to use as you have found. It bears little resemblance of the epic site it used to be and the fall out from their disgraceful public relations response to thousands of complaints has them floundering to recoup lost subscribers. Do not waste a subscription fee until FMP have rectified all that has gone wrong.
