“Need an NCIS enhancement tool to read the Norfolk records”

Written on: 06/01/2016 by LuisCassidy250 (1 review written)

On TV it's amazing how the techie bods can make a clear picture out of a blurred image. If only the same could be done for the Norfolk parish records on findmypast. This county is a massive area of interest for me so I was really excited to see these records were available. How frustrating it is to find many of the images are so difficult to read on so many parishes. They are badly blurred or the sheet is almost white which makes them unreadable. According to the title pages these records were… Read Full Review

“My Geneology Friend”

Written on: 05/01/2016 by 260Sanders (1 review written)

Find My Past has enabled me to fill in many gaps in my researches. The Newspaper section has added some interesting facts about ancestors. Many Parish Registers that other firms don't have. Have rejoined for a 2nd year. Always something new being added… Read Full Review

“Great for searches”

Written on: 17/12/2015 by CG43 (1 review written)

I have found that this site has the best search functions and documents to view but don't find the tree building as easy to navigate as some other sites. I therefore have my tree in one site but use this site for all my searches. If they could simplify the tree and hints it may be better, but I have not found any other sites that could search like this one. I found my great great great grandmother when I only had the name Sarah and the year and where she was born, the marriage details were… Read Full Review

“1939 Register”

Written on: 17/12/2015 by 449O'Rourke (1 review written)

As a customer of FindMyPast, I was attracted to use their unique extra service "1939 Register". If you do you may encounter individuals "redacted" for privacy reasons. If they are now deceased and you can provide a scanned copy of a death certificate it is possible to get them "revealed" on the record. My experience was a 2 week turnround. Very staisfied… Read Full Review

“Frustrating, but still worth the work”

Written on: 17/12/2015 by Boyleqq221 (1 review written)

Findmypast has a lot of records available but has a less than optimal search engine. So much more could be done to enable searches that take far less time--for example, in doing a census search, if one could search by "married" or "widowed" or "not married", a lot of time would be saved. I would also like details about the records available, such as the dates covered by each set (parish registers, newspapers, etc)--perhaps this is available, but if so, I haven't found any. However, although… Read Full Review

“Research into WW1 soldiers.”

Written on: 14/12/2015 by AmyaMiles (1 review written)

For my research into the men of Wendover who fought in WW1 'Find my Past' is incredibly useful. My only criticism is that one cannot print out part of a page of newspapers… Read Full Review

“Mainly Scottish Records”

Written on: 11/12/2015 by marsalay (1 review written)

Find my Past is a bit short of Scottish records, especially in the newspaper section. To make searching for an entry in a census it would be very helpful if FMP allowed you to enter a County or Parish of birth. That would make it much easier to distinguish John Smith for the other 10,000 John Smiths that appear. The Scottish newspapers that are available and the editions of those are very limited. Also sometimes the newspaper article does not display properly. I would like when the display of… Read Full Review

“Easy to use site”

Written on: 10/12/2015 by ArielHouse (1 review written)

I starting using the site when they had a free weekend and got hooked, eventually buying an annual subscription. I have used other genealogy sites but find the presentation (no clutter)and searching of information on this site much clearer than others therefore easier to use. Filtering when searching for information on a person is easier plus the site is spot on for searching females using both their married name and their maiden name. One draw back is that there his no linkage to another… Read Full Review

“I could'nt find anything about any of my relatives!”

Written on: 09/12/2015

I started searching things I already knew eg -myself and came to find that there was no record of me what-so-ever on this site. All I could fine on my family members was when they went to vote and where, because that's what I paid for?… Read Full Review

“Disappointed with the 1939 census due to the high cost...”

Written on: 30/11/2015 by 201Gorman (1 review written)

Disappointed with the 1939 census due to the high cost to view each item but the availability of birth marriage and death registers to fairly recent years is very helpful in a degree of modern research. The ten year censuses are very useful between 1941 and 1911, I'm not going to use 1939 census due to cost. The availability of military records is good, better than the other main supplier. However, the search engine could be better, particularly being able to search where a person was born… Read Full Review

“1939 register and Saved records”

Written on: 27/11/2015 by YandelMelton (1 review written)

Overall I like FMP but the 1939 register is too expensive. I know these things cost money to do but an Annual Subscription isn't cheap either, and I would have liked the time and effort to have been put in to more Church Records and more Newspapers. Also, when a record is 'opened" it automatically is saved in "My Records". Why isn't there a way of "saving" only the ones needed. I am fed up with deleting unwanted Saved Records. The experience overall is good but I have nothing to compare it… Read Full Review

“Probably poorest search engine and customer service”

Written on: 09/11/2015

This site has probably the poorest search engine of all. As an example, trying to search for a baptism of someone, you enter their name and year of birth, plus parameters either side of that year. Next you have to choose the country. Then you have to choose a subcategory. There is an option for entering a 'Record Set' but only if you know the exact wording. Enter 'York' for Yorkshire and you are given a list to choose from but you then have to click again on 'More' to see if your records are… Read Full Review

“1939”

Written on: 08/11/2015 by MDAA (1 review written)

I have a World 12 Month subscription but have found it much less useful than Ancestry, especially the syncing with my family tree. I also strongly object to being asked to pay more for the latest 1939 records on top of my subscription. But the newspaper collections are excellent and well indexed. I would continue with the subscription and even consider recommending but only if the subscription includes the 1939 records. I think FMP have done a disservice to their best customers… Read Full Review

“1939 Register”

Written on: 05/11/2015 by Hughes5 (1 review written)

I was disappointed that being a member of Find My Past did not have any effect on the charges to access the 1939 register. It appears to be a money making scheme. It is very expensive to make a number of searches and provides little detailed information on the family. It is also hampered by the fact that anyone over 100 is "officially closed"and to overcome this is another expensive procedure.I would advise anyone who is thinking of using this register to think carefully about the cost and what… Read Full Review

“My fantastic forbears.”

Written on: 01/11/2015 by Tesss349 (1 review written)

I have found findmypast to be very useful in my search for my family members. Sometimes the desired result doesn't come straight-away so it is best to approach from a different angle eg can't find known husbands name in the census try the wife's married name and usually you get the result you wanted. I have only be using this site for a few weeks but it is now the first site I will go to for any other names of my family tree. One thing I have found is that this site is very addictive and once… Read Full Review

“Appalling search engine”

Written on: 20/10/2015 by Landen184 (1 review written)

I have used findmypast on occasions over the years - although my principal source of research has always been Ancestry. I signed up recently to make a renewed assault on all the brick walls in my family tree and have found that findmypast is next to unusable. Whoever designed the search function has obviously never doen any family research of their own. I have just tried to find out what the Yorkshire record set of baptisms, burials and marriages actually comprises. There is no information… Read Full Review

“Still falling short in their searches - so frustrating !!!”

Written on: 13/10/2015 by BeckettDolan (1 review written)

I've used findmypast for years and years and before they changed the site it was veryeasy to find things that you couldn't on the other big site. For example its now impossible to do a search on census's where you don't know how the name of the place of birth was spelled like you could on the old site and instead you can only pick from a list of places so if yours isn't there then its tough. Like trying to find Lester which is how the local census taker spelled Leicester on a lot of entries or… Read Full Review

Pipsqueak1999's Comment

Written on: 18/10/2015

And this weekend has been even worse, with the Browse options being unusable, and the Sort option working very intermittently and less rather than more. Useful Newspaper searches impossible due to the county choice option being kaput, then working, then kaput again. And, of course, FMP don't have anyone working over the weekend who can sort things out - 24/7 website with a 9-5/Mon-Fri Support. Thank goodness I got a deal on my subscription.
