“Found my past!”

Written on: 22/03/2013 by bluemoonbabe

What started as a simple search for a birth has become an absorbing hobby. FMP is full of ever expanding record sets and is particularly good for my Manchester research. Whenever i have encountered a problem they have been quick to offer advice or sort techie type stuff out too. Also MUCH easier to navigate than either Ancestry or Family Search which are very confusing. I have not yet uploaded my tree, but others who have say it is very useful and this is next on my 'to do'... (read more)

“Quoth the raven.....”

Written on: 04/03/2013

Not very impressed with the information available. Nowhere near as easy to use as Ancestry. I found that searching for a name could result in the Christian name being represented by an initial. In one particular case, I searched for the name Elijah Artus. The result came back as E.Artus and when I viewed the record (cost 15 credits)it concerned an E. Artus who had been killed in action in the Boer war (definitely not Elijah) and Ernest Richard Artus, KIA in WWI Flanders 1915. Not very... (read more)

“Major Service problems”

Written on: 01/03/2013

I belong to both Ancestry and The Genealogist, and their service has been first class from the outset. Find My Past service is dreadful, as it takes numerous e mail requests, and they have difficulties, even when you try and pinpoint the problem for them, Ringing the service centre is equally bad,as you get the "your a number 3 in queue", and so down, until "The next available adviser will deal with your inquiry" which is simply dealt with after almost 10 minutes, with another pre recorded... Shockingly poor coverage. I have been doing my family tree for several years. When I signed up for a free trial and searched for people I'd already found on 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses, findmypast gacve zero matches. Over the course of three nights I searched for 50-60 people already on my tree in teh hope of finding some extra snippets of info. I found almost nothing. Not almost nothing new, but nothing at all. “Don't waste your money if looking for Scottish records ”

Written on: 23/09/2012 by freyasaunt (1 review written)

Having researched reviews for family history tracing websites Find My Past.co.uk had the highest rate of good reviews. The website offers access to a large selection of records. It does not state that this refers to English & Welsh records. Find My Past also states that subscribers can access the 1911 Census which for me would be the real starting point beyond the information I already know. I paid a 6 month subscription to access records of what I know to be a mainly Scottish ancestry &... (read more)

Find My Past is a great resource for searching family history. It is easy to access, even to someone like me who was not brought up with computers!! Yes! If you make a mistake it can take hours to correct.
Very poor and not user friendly.
I wish I had never invested in my 6 month membership.
Also you cannot print or store the family tree! They glibly say that this vital facility is "pending" but don't give a date for when it will be available.
I wish I had signed with Ancestry.co.uk!! My fault but a big mistake!!

“ Don't bother us”

Written on: 21/04/2012

This site has some content not found on other sites e.g. British Army service file. So, from that perspective, a must visit. But just pray that you don't have a technical problem like an image that won't load. While you will get a cheery message about trying again later or informing the staff of the problem and they will resolve in 28 days, don't believe it. After the 4 week delay you will probably get a glib message which states -- "Unfortunately, we cannot advise of a timescale for these... (read more)

“The best site for beginners AND experienced researchers”

FindMyPast is extremely good value for money. The parish records section is added to on a regular basis and the census records are extremely easy to use, as are the births, marriages and deaths. “ Records, Records, Records ! ”

This is a straightforward repository of Records. Clearly laid out & easily searchable because of that, a site I recommend. The FMP is quite obviously there to help the researcher & does not bombard you with emails & `Hints` as another Company does, which I consider now as `junk mail`. You are a very good & dependable reference library. My minor niggle is that it would be good to have a refined filter in place to narrow down a first search, full name & only dates of birth & death can lead... (read more)

Best use is by combining the results from Census searches with results from 'FreeBMD' website. This process enables a user to build assured family groups and covers approx 1830 to 1920. It is much easier to search for particular people in BMD part of the site particular if a few details are known the results are always more relevant than from using another well known site. I have had a subsciption to FindMy Past for a few years now and believe that if you have a number of enquiries you wish to make over a short period of time (say 6 months) then a subsciption is good value and better than pay as you go.
