“not very helpful”

Written on: 26/07/2015 by jazelig (1 review written)

I couldn't even find the details I already had of my ancestors. I entered the name of my great, great grandfather putting in his birth and death years. Apparently the only information they can come up with is to confirm the information I have. They didn't even have his date of birth, I gave just the year and that is what I got back. I do know his fathers name and date he died and where he lived. I wanted to find out his wife's name and maybe when he was born. It seems he didn't exist at… Read Full Review

“Would like more Australian Records”

Written on: 24/07/2015

I found quite a lot of Tasmanian Descendants but not all and they should have been there as the birth date was within the time frame and district. The one complaint I have is in the British India Records waiting for them to come up and then it drops out and a picture of a ship appears or when viewing an image of a record the green arrow goes round and round forever and in the end I go out of the system in frustration. Overall have found a lot of information for our Family Tree… Read Full Review

“Limited Information Available”

Written on: 25/06/2015 by SterlingAshworth (1 review written)

I was looking forward to finding lots of detail about my ancestors, instead off just access to the Census for certain years. A big, important chunk was missing from my particular family, since it looks as if parts of the 1911 Census were damaged by water and it's limiting as to how far back you can go. Still, the details of the available Census forms were interesting. This is a fairly good service if you already know names, dates, etc..but why would you be checking if you did?… Read Full Review

Only 5% of the 1911 Census was damaged by water - this happened many years ago. It is unfortunate, but there are problems across all of the census records, where some records are damaged or missing. It will be very bad luck if the records you want are missing in every year. This is going to be a problem across all genealogy websites which provide census information and not isolated to FMP. Sometimes you just have to go around, rather than straight back.

I know that Find My Past have had functionality problems in the past year I don't think that limited information is a criticism that can be directed at them. They have an exceptional range of original and indexed information available and cannot be held to account because original census documents have been water damaged. Any genealogy site would have difficulty providing information that is damaged or destroyed. As for being limited in how far you can go back, I personally have got back to 1244 on one branch of my family and 1520 on another . Sometimes you need to be a bit more creative in how you search. I find that I have more problems with recent information (post 1911) than I do with older stuff.

“I have found this site invaluable in my Family History...”

Written on: 13/06/2015 by mariangrace (1 review written)

I have found this site invaluable in my Family History research, it has parish records that are not on the other sites. In particular, most of my ancestors are from Suffolk and although lots of the records have been transcribed by the local FH society and put on CDs they are expensive to buy and if you don't know for certain which parish you want you could end up paying £15+ for something you don't need. I also find that quite often that census returns are quite patchy eg sometimes on one… Read Full Review

Suffolk registers can be an absolute pain to use on FMP. For some reason best known to them, they have split the baptisms into 3 parts, so you have to first find out which part the parish you are interested in is situated. Why are they not merged???? Plus you can't easily search from the Births and Baptisms screen and specify Suffolk as a whole if you are not sure which parish you need, because you get all of the GRO results as well - whoever thought putting the GROs and Parish Records into the same group needs a good kick up the rear!

As for reliability of the results, if you search, for example for the parish of Hoxne from the Births and Baptisms search page putting the word into the second location box, you get 58,827 results. By putting Hoxne into the Keyword box you get 60,231. So which is the best way and how would anyone unfamiliar with the system's vagaries know? Also, for some reason, they've decided not to include an option to sort the results on Location, even though this is one of the columns displayed in the results.

Yes the records are good - but the search needs to be made more reliable and user-friendly.

The other way to search Suffolk Baptisms is to go to the main search screen, choose the 3 baptism parts from the record set browse options and put the parish you are interested in in the second Where box - which doesn't have a name - or search for a name.

I subscribed a number of times for a month then forgot to untick the auto function .That goes with all Geneaology In the end I waited for the world special and have had plenty of success . The new search function is convoluted ,having to constantly go back to edit instead of the drop down as before . Comparing it with Ancestry/LDS/My Heritage ,there are still gaps in their data base plus there is no interaction between members . Maybe that is a good or bad thing for error. “Disappointed with findmypast”

Since returning to Australia and despite paying a healthy annual premium, I find that I can't use the service as the site fails to recognise my log in details. I have complained about this, but the remedy seemed complicated! Consequently, I have paid quite a lot of money for virtually no service! Very disappointing! Bob Australia… Read Full Review

I had long dreamed of writing my family story but I baulked at using this service because I felt the cost was too great. Then I happened upon a special (limited time) offer, and this gave me a taste for what FindMyPast could help me achieve. Of course, in my excitement at getting information I didn't realize was available, I overlooked the time constraints of the special offer (naive of me!)and discovered I was automatically into a month-by-month subscription! “Best Source for English records”

Written on: 25/04/2015 by piShea30 (1 review written)

Have used FMP for the last 9 months. Was able to find information here that other websites did not provide. One suggestion for improvement: The ability to print actual images of documents. The transcriptions do not always include all the information that is listed on the actual image. But, having said that, I do like access to the actual images so that I can interpret the information on the record. Transcribers do their best, but knowing the family, the locations, etc., the person… Read Full Review

I would love to print out the document images, but keep finding that only half of wide documents are viewable, plus long ones either have their top or bottom missing. And guess where the entry I want always seems to be?

I have been, researching my family history for over ten years now and became a member of FMP and another well known genealogy site when I was rich a few years ago. I had to tighten my belt and stopped my subscriptions to both after a couple of years. I missed the ability to simply type in a name and hey presto numerous results would pop up within seconds. I had to return to one and chose FMP and monthly subscriptions and I have not regretted my decision. Yes, there are glitches, I too have a… Read Full Review

I am a little curious about some of the wording of your review. I don't see the need to maintain that you are not an employee - has there been an accusation to a previous review you have submitted? Also, why specify that you "too have a slow connection"?

The reason I question this way is that there have been false reviews posted on the internet, and attempts made to counter negative reviews - by the company.

No-one is saying anything but very positive things about the the type and range of records that FMP hold. The problems are with the search capability, and the inability/unwillingness of the company to correct problems identified due to the way that some of their records have been uploaded or transcribed and the way their search cannot be used for in-depth searching - not to mention the regular instability of the site. You may not have experienced either of these problems, but trust me they are there.

“A genealogy resource I wouldn't be without”

Written on: 18/04/2015 by simohutc (1 review written)

Speaking as a professional genealogist, I would say that this site contains important resources that cannot be found elsewhere online. At a reasonable price. It has provided crucial information for my research, and the areas I feel that are most valuable are the wide range of historical newspaper articles, the military records, the resources relating to British India and the scans of UK parish baptismal records. My only really criticism is that its search interface falls short in comparison to… Read Full Review

Pipsqueak1999's Response to simohutc's Review

As a professional genealogist, you should be well aware of the need to have a reliable and fully-functional search capability - otherwise, what confidence can you have that the results returned are complete and the product you are supplying is accurate? No-one is arguing that the RANGE of FMP's records is great, but the QUALITY of some of them is appalling. They must surely have undertaken quality-control checks on the data before it was uploaded, and yet it takes only seconds to find glaring errors in newly uploaded records. Numerous old error reports have not been actioned, there are bulk errors on data sets reported last year which are still outstanding, and there are careless programming errors on the Browse Fields to name but a few. Perhaps you would like to comment on these points.

Simohutc's reply to Pipsqueak1999's Comment

I primarily use FMP for the original images it provides, of which there are many for example parish register scans and military records, not it's data-sets derived from transcriptions and the like. If I see original document scans with transcription errors, I'll always try and flag them up with FMP or Ancestry.
The quality of the scanned images for original records is generally good, however occasionally the source data provided for them can be incomplete.
Like I said, and you seem to agree, the search capability could do with some improvement. To be fair, from what i've seen FMP seem to be making some changes here. How good this improvement is remains to be seen.

I took out a subscription at New Year for half the normal price and while it can work as intended, it often doesn't. The 1851 census frequently won't load pages, it won't move from page to page and when I complained about it there was a `promise` to fix the problem within 90 days. Wow, that's impressive - three months to fix a problem which shouldn't exist. As I write, the website is down and showing a picture of an impending shipwreck. How appropriate. Hello,
I must have been in a generous mood for a change!
I did get the half price subscription and have been lucky enough to find some interesting snippets in the newspapers. However, everything about it is so frustrating that I certainly won't renew the subscription - even if they paid me £50.

A great deal has been written online about Findmypast's new search which was implemented in April 2014. It was not a good move on their part and they have striven to improve things, culminating in the release in the past few weeks of a new new search. However, no matter the technological achievements of this new search, it is rendered useless when more detailed searching is required sue to the restrictions of the use of Browse options for place names. I've been on most of the genealogy sites and find my past is a good one although you have to get to know how to use them all. If you have some information about a family member it helps but there are ways with the bare minimum. If they are born before 1911 a useful way is to check the census records which usually go back to 1841 but there are records going back further if you look at record sets on the site. I find if you put in the bare information it brings better results strangely. finding a… Read Full Review
