As a Teacher in China, this is a useful tool, especially the idiom dictionary. But recently the site has been infected with adware. Now its almost impossible to use. I would not recommend this, plus Im worried something from this site might infect my machine. Webmaster sort it out!

Great site. The only dictionary that I use. I also love their mobile website.

Poor grammar, confused definitions and basically useless "information" Example: Searched for the definition of a coved ceiling and The Free Dictionary provided this garbled response "a ceiling, the part of which next the wail is constructed in a cove" What the heck does "next the wail"mean? And then "is constructed in a cove" implies that whatever was built, it must have been done in a cove somewhere. I think the "dictionary" is a ploy to get you to the site with its plethora of ads. Never coming back and putting a review on Yelp as well.

One among the best free online references websites is the thefreedictionary.com, very educational and informative, contains a comprehensive volume of dictionary meanings and word uses including actual usage in sentences. Aside from being very educational the format is not very technical making it very user friendly and layman for common use. Its very utilitarian as it does not cater to academicians or students and scholars alone, it may also be used by the homemakers or the housewife taking care of their kids.

This is rather unkind review. I conclude that it was written by someone who would always say "next to the wall" rather than just "next the wall" - OK, so would I, but there are many highly literate people who would be happy with the shorter phrase; and when discussing details of building construction it is a strange idea that a wall might be constructed in (= at ) the geographical location of a cove rather than in ( = as ) the geometrical shape of the same name.
I use several hard-copy dictionaries and sometimes Merriam-Webster online, but I have a shortcut to the free dictionary and thesaurus on my computer desktop and find both very valuable.
