I bought a De Longhi microwave/ grill/oven from Argos in July 2010. In September 2011 my morning porridge stayed cold as the microwave element stopped working. I took the machine back to the store and asked them to repair it as , although more than 12 months old and past the guarantee period, I know about my statutory rights as a consumer. In this case, the handbook told me I would get 'years of pleasure' from this product which failed after just 14 months.
Readers should know that Argos will not even look at a defective product after 12 months. They require that you take it to an independent electrical engineer and pay to have it tested, plus a written report to show that there is a faulty part. You will be lucky to find such a person. When I did find an independent dealer, he refused to get involved with any third party disputes.
So back to Argos customer services who eventually agreed to accept my statutory rights and gave me a voucher for the original cost less an amount for the fourteen months' use I had received. No interest in repairing a superb machine which was still fully-functioning apart from the microwave element. Just look on Amazon to find reconditioned de Longhi microwaves listed as 'Argos returns'. Funny that.
All this has left a bitter taste and made me think carefully before buying from Argos again. Even if you buy a 3-year guarantee they might just give you the original price back in vouchers and you might have to pay far more for a replacement, as in my case.
