I bought a number of historical biographies, mainly by Antonia Fraser, and have found them extremely well-written and clearly explained. The only huge disappointment is that there are illustrations missing and perhaps colour plates, some of which are referred to by the author. For example, the drawing of the old Houses of Parliament is not shown - this would have made the story much clearer. Mary, Queen of Scots appears to have similar deletions, no doubt on the grounds of cost.
I find this rather dishonest. The books in fact are not the bargains they appear.
