“If you need something basic and portable its okay”

★★★☆☆

written by eLJaybud on 05/09/2012

Got it from a second hand shop for £120 a couple of years ago, it always had a bit of a click on the hard drive especially notable when powering off. Inside is a Western Digital 120gb drive this has since been replaced with a toshiba 500gb drive, this wasn't easy I removed various screws until the case was far apart enough to undo the retaining screws and change the drive, not easy but possible with some care. I also upgraded the memory with a spare 2gb stick of memory I had. This was mainly used with Ubuntu as a TV and media machine until I changed from a standard monitor connection to a HDMI setup. It did the job well enough but really isn't up to handling 1080p video. It's now probably going to get used for experimentation (maybe load it up with windows) as I now use an android phone when I'm away from home though this was very handy when I went away for a week last year. Still the best way to write word documents and the right size to easily fit in a bag to go away for the week.

Then put ubuntu or some other form of linux on it, it is too slow for windows anyway, and definitely put 2gb of memory in it. I also put an old 500gb sata drive in there but it required loosening lots of screws and sliding it in place then lots more screwdriver acrobatics.

“Nice netbook and good value for money”

★★★★★

written by roadwater on 08/07/2011

I was looking for a notebook, to use while away from home. The Acer Aspire one D260 seemed to fit the bill, and I've not been disappointed so far. It was easy to set up and I've, so far, found it easy to use. I purchased it from StudentComputers.co.uk as an 'open box', refurbished item at a cost of £159.98. The condition was 'as new' and, at the price I paid, the item reperesents excellent value for money. I wanted a netbook with a fairly long useable battery life. This netbook seems to fit the bill, and I experienced no problem in using it for about 4 hours on battery power alone. Even after 4 hours, there seemed to be some life left in the battery, before it would need recharging. However, I'm not convinced by some of the pre-loaded software which was included on the machine I purchased eg. -: 1. Microsoft Office - not much more than a demo version. To get a more usable version, you have to pay a fairly hefty sum and activate the full suite, which contains many features that most non-business users don't need. I've downloaded OpenOffice, which has all that I need and is free! 2. Some sort of 'protection' software from Vodaphone. I've downloaded Avast, the free anti-virus software, which seems to work well and has good reviews 3. A suite of 'try before you buy' games. These games are of no interest to me. This software is easily removed, if ,as in my case, you don't want it. The customer service from StudentComputers was very good, plenty of information about the progress of my order, speedy despatch and quick delivery. Their website was easy to use and informative, but seemed a little slow to respond (or was it my rural broadband connection to blame?). Overall, a good product, very good value for money and excellent customer service from StudentComputers.co.uk
