“Dainese Scout GTX , superb winter gloves”

★★★★★

written by paulenew on 31/01/2012

The Scout GTX is an upgraded version of the Sprog, in which Dainese have made a lot of improvements that seem to have been based on customer gripes about the Sprog, primarily with a great improvement in the cuff design that apparently used to leak badly. I can vouch for the fact that the Scout gloves are waterproof ...completely waterproof in fact, as I've ridden without leakage for an hour in a torrential downpour that anyone sane would probably have stopped and given up in. And they're warm - straight out of the bag I did my usual 1.25 hr commute at 05:00 one December morning (and a lovely 3 degrees C, I should add) and my fingers were barely starting to tingle by the time the journey ended. So I purchased a pair of Dainese Silk liners and I've since ridden the same distance at 0 degrees without feeling the cold at all. Build quality is great - the first pair of gloves I've had where the liners (both insulated and waterproof) are properly retained in the fingers when I take the gloves off; seems like such a simple design point, but why can so few manufacturers manage it? And there's one more bonus - these gloves don't make my hands stink because Gore Tex, unlike some of the cheap nasty copies (I'm thinking Hippora in particular), is both waterproof AND breathable. So, the downsides. Price is a consideration - I wouldn't normally go out and spend £100 on gloves, but after wearing these I'm glad I did. I've had 2 'cheap' pairs of winter gloves (£40ish from Buffalo and Rayven), and they were garbage, largely due to being poorly made and neither warm nor waterproof. Armour could be better, although it's perfectly adequate - I love my summer gloves because they have extensive knuckle and finger armour, plus Knox hard sliders on the palm (having broken my scaphoid last year I'm a big fan of anything that may save me doing it again!), so although coming to something with less protection isn't too appealing, it would be unfair to say the gloves are lacking in armour just because I would like more... Overall, I would strongly recommend these gloves to any all year round bikers as they're exceptionally comfortable and warm and the build quality seems very good. Size for size, they're a perfect fit (i.e. Large actually is a Large), and despite the very effective insulation, control feel is excellent.
