This was an unexpectedly simple process. After placing the order and getting the acknowledgement then waiting about 4 days, another email confirmed the iPhone was unlocked.
I put in the new SIM card, connected to iTunes and after being prompted for my iCloud password, everything worked.
I'm now happily using a low cost Tesco SIM rather than a more expensive Vodafone one.
I'm very cynical about promises made by support companies but this process was as easy as it was claimed to be.
