I tried this as a long shot. I had taken my phone to a local shop, but he didn't seem confident and was unsure if the phone could be unlocked (HTC Wildfire on Tesco Mobile).
Within 10 minutes I received an unlock code and full instructions via e-mail.
I followed the instructions and the phone was instantly unlocked and ready to use with my new sim.
Excellent!
