I had been a customer with Vodafone for many years until I applied for my yearly upgrade and specifically asked to be given a phone like the one I already had. I am a bit of a technophobe and did not want a fancy all singing and dancing phone, I simply wanted to stay with one that I was used to using. However Vodafone chose to send me a phone that was not the same as the one I had had and in addition the phone was defective. I asked for a replacement and again asked that it be the same as my previous phone. Surprisingly this became a major problem, apparently they could only replace it with like for like. I again explained that I was happy to have a cheap phone that was simpler to use. This did not seem unreasonable to staff I spoke to when I went into various vodafone stores however on each occasion when they spoke to the customer services the response was that they could not assist me and I would have to accept the phone. I felt that this was ridiculous and decided to terminate my contract and returned the phone forthwith on the advice of consumer credit giving the grounds that the phone had been faulty and not what I had asked for
This action resulted in vodafone claiming that I had breached my contract and owed them over £300. I refused to pay it and they handed it over to a debt recovery company. Their final act was to put a default marker against my credit history record making it impossible for me to obtain any credit. That said they have actually done me a major service in many ways but I think it is imperative that any person thinking of using them should not do it. Avoid them at all costs!! This was such a simple matter that could have been resolved with sound customer service and common sense
