I recently bought a smartphone Samsung galaxy y and as my reception at home with Virgin is not good was advised to change to O2 . I wanted pay as you go and was told that if I had wifi I could access the Internet free. However I have been charged £1 for data each day . Also if I accessed voicemail or checked my balance I am charged .
I am going back to virgin where my £20 will last longer.

Can I just say, the reason your being charged for data while on WiFi is because your phone constantly uses data at a low level. So if your WiFi signal lapses for a small time then the tiny amount of data rapidly reaches the £1 max daily charge. This is your phone not O2. To prevent this you need to go to : Settings - wireless and network - mobile network - then untick use packet data. This will prevent unwanted data charges. You can then switch it back on when out of WiFi coverage. Hope this helps.
