The DFDS mini cruise from Newcastle to Amsterdam was a step above what we expected. While it was never going to be at the same level as a full cruise, it was definitely a step up from a ferry. The cabins are very basic but this is reflected in the price. The food choice in the 7 seas buffet restaurant, although overpriced, is excellent and worth booking in advance as we did. Drinks prices are not cheap but probably what you'd expect to pay in a medium quality hotel and, if you look hard, you can find some bargains here too. Everything is priced in Euros so the exchange rate does make a difference (£ are accepted everywhere too). Prices in the onboard shop are excessive but even here there are some bargains to be had.
Arrival in the port was delayed by about half an hour which, although unavoidable, wasn't apologised for which was disappointing. Disembarkation at the port was a nightmare taking nearly 45 minutes to get through passport control and on to the coach for transportation into Amsterdam thus reducing considerably time available in the City. The entertainment on the ship both ways was of a pretty good standard and throughout the trip staff were very pleasant and helpful.
