“food was shocking”

★☆☆☆☆

written by shady3452 on 13/09/2018

The food. It was shocking and the prices charged for a pathetic buffet were too expensive. £75 for two people and two cokes. How can you justify this its shocking. I will be going on every social media site I can to highlight this behaviour. I knew before we sailed that I could get a £10 deduction per person but we thought we would just get sandwiches on the ship. Oh no! The shop does not sell food so we had the option of dinning at £34 a head or buffet at £30 a head. Its an absolute disgrace the way you treat your customers once you have them captive within the monopoly of your boat.

“fish and chips shocking”

written by brownsonboard on 21/09/2016

my wife and i travelled on DFDS seaways for the first time and to be honest it was very pleasant and had a good time througout nice staff clean cabins {although would be better with a kettle in cabins}.the night time entertainment was great and a comfy sleep afterwards.BUT the next day i had fish and chips £16 and the wife had a bowl of chips £7 in the lighthouse cafe SO DISSAPOINTING.the fish was well over cooked although it didnt seem to take long for the order to arrive it was the smallest fish i have ever been served and rubbery the chips must have been cooked about three times... we wish we had complained but didnt want to make a fuss.we will travel on dfds again but make sure we take plenty packed lunches for the journey.

“ Shady, Suspect Business Practices”

★☆☆☆☆

written by patcolegraf on 17/01/2016

In September 2015 we booked online a May 2016 sailing with DFDS Seaways. Now we need to cancel this booking as our overseas travel plans have changed. After a four day run-around with DFDS, we discovered that we had actually booked with a company called Aferry - the booking confirmation does not use this name. The "Manage Booking" section of the confirmation led us back to DFDS, who couldn't help us because apparently we hadn't booked with them - but we used their website! It took another two days to find the contact information for Aferry. Now we have been told that our booking is non-refundable, so Aferry/DFDS has just made 115 GBP, and will be able to resell our booking to someone else. What a great way to make money! At no time, nor on any of the booking information were we informed that the type of booking we were making was non-refundable. However, the email confirmation information we received said there was a 25GBP fee for cancellation. Too late we discovered that the information is buried in the fine print of the Terms and Conditions (pages 6 & 7) We feel that information should be made clear to the customer at the time of purchase. How hard is it to include the phrase: "This booking fee is non-refundable" and omit the misleading information on how to manage the booking? We were just stunned that such a big company as this one would deliberately go out of its way to a) obfuscate the terms and conditions; b) mislead with incorrect information; and c) not even bother to state clearly on the booking that the booking fee is non-refundable. Very, very shady business practices in our view. Perhaps this is how they make their money - by duping unwary customers.

“Grim cabin, grim food, grim crossing”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 16/12/2015

Booked a Commodore cabin as I thought it would be roomy and better than a normal cabin. Well, it would have been if they hadn't put a stupid extra bunk bed in the room. Bedding was clean though the room was stifling hot and I had to have the air conditioning on full which was very noisy so couldn't sleep. The bathroom stank of sewerage and the grouting and cleaning issues need addressed so I didn't have a shower as it was too dirty. Before we left I checked the menu in their restaurants and they don't really offer any choice for vegetarians so I thought it would be 'safer' to use their Seven Seas buffet as I was sure they would have had more veggie options there. WRONG... oh my goodness, where do I start with this, it was disgusting. Everything was out of a packet and cut into small pieces, the quality was really poor. Oh, and only one veggie option of a veg pie!!! YUK. ALSO BEWARE OF THE WAITERS AS THEY TRY TO FORCE PEOPLE TO BUY THEIR NAFF WINE AND BOTTLES OF WATER, WE SAID NO BUT THE COUPLE NEXT TO US SAID THEY'D HAVE ONE BOTTLE AND THE WAITER BROUGHT THEM TWO OF EACH, SWIFTLY CRACKED THEM ALL OPEN THEN SAID HE COULDN'T UNDERSTAND THEM WHEN THEY TRIED TO COMPLAIN AND THEY JUST HAD TO PAY FOR THEM, VERY BAD PRACTICE AND SHAME ON DFDS. We didn't use the bars, clubs or cinema as we were so disgusted by the food but in the morning the decks were covered in sick and smashed bottles and glasses which the guys were trying to clean up with hoses. However, the breakfast in the morning was very good in the commodore area. If it was in the other part, I would have declined judging by the dinner the night before. Travelling back with Brittany Ferries as won't use DFDS again.

“Recent crossing complaint.”

★★☆☆☆

written by Warrenholt on 19/03/2015

We are regular travelers with DFDS to visit family in Holland, but have been getting increasingly more angry with the behaviour of other passengers. They are allowed to walk round carrying glasses and bottles of beer resulting in them being sick and the crew having to then clean it up. On a recent crossing we were woken at 2-30 in the morning with passengers playing football on deck 9 at the top of the stair well and generally making a nuisance of them self, stopping other passengers from sleeping. All this behaviour went on right under the noses of the staff who did nothing about it. We would also like to complain about the costs, we can't seem to find the advertised crossing costs, and we tend to go in the winter months, eg in Feb. we paid £270 return for a car + 2-passengers, and if we went at the end of May (28th) the price shoots up from an already high price to £503 return. It has only ever been a convenient way of traveling, but we are going to have fly in the future as you seem to be concentrating on the Mini Break passengers who in our opinion are causing the problems with the bad behaviour. Its a shame because we did use to enjoy crossing with DFDS, but alas probably no more.

“Wouldnt give it any stars but needed to share this!!!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by priddyg on 28/02/2014

Myself, family & friends travelled with DFDS on Sunday 16th February. We are not happy with the way we were treated by staff & have lodged a complaint. I will most definitely be taking this further. After sending the letter below to DFDS I received a reply saying we must agree to disagree, meaning their bullying security staff are allowed to carry on lying & treat people appallingly. All 8 of our party were in the compass bar enjoying ourselves when a Dutchman came over to my 25 year old daughter asking her to arm wrestle him, when my daughter refused he tried to punch her, my son & his friend 17 & 16 years old stood up to stop him but was wrestled to the ground & pushed around by the security guards my son's friend had his passport taken off him & told to go to his cabin which he did with no fuss at all. Meanwhile the Dutchman who had caused the trouble was walking around with his mates barking/growling at young girls making sexist comments & was even allowed back in the bar to drink more. An hour later we asked if we could take my son's friend outside for a cigarette, they said yes. The Dutchman started following us so we asked the tallest security guard to help us & he just made out he couldn't understand us, so we took him back to his cabin. Sometime later my daughter took him for a cigarette on the opposite side of the boat where my son & myself joined them, after seeing the Dutchman walk past again my daughter asked the tall security guard if he would stay with us whilst we finished our cigarettes, this time he spoke to us in English saying he wasn't going to do that for us, it was against health & safety then he just walked away. A few moments later the Dutchman came outside where we were & as we decided to go back to the cabin he told my son & his friend he wouldn't touch them on the boat but as soon as we got to Amsterdam he would stab them both. An argument broke out but no fighting out of no where the tallest security guard wrestled my son's friend Jack to the floor, when Jack got up the same security guard ran at him with a flying kick straight into jacks stomach knocking him backwards 2-3 feet. I was asking him to stop but he was just pushing me out of the way( I am 50 4ft 10ins & weigh about 8stone) to get to Jack & my son, a person we didn't know tried to stop the security guards from hurting Jack further, now there was 2 more security guards & a lady guard, the smallest of the guards had my son pinned up against the wall by his neck telling him he was going to spend the night in prison whilst the tallest had Jack in a head lock & he couldn't breathe properly.I was talking to the lady trying to tell her what had happened when she was knocked to the floor by security guards pushing Jack & my son around. It was my son who helped her up & was asking if she was ok, even this incident didn't make the security guards stop. Meanwhile nothing was said or done to the Dutchman & his mates who just stood laughing then walked off. My son & Jack went back to their cabin the lady took my son's passport, she asked me to meet with her next morning at 9, I asked for the security guards names to report them but was told I couldn't have them, the lady wouldn't give me her name either. I stayed there with them but Jack started coughing up blood so I went to reception for a doctor, the lady & a Geordie man called Mark came to see him but he wasn't examined. I stayed with them in their cabin all night because I was worried about their safety. Next morning I went to reception at 9 as arranged & the lady wasn't there, I was told to come back at 10.20 which I did.I was taken into an office with staff that weren't even there the previous night. I was told my son & jack weren't allowed to sail back. I asked if we all could make a statement & we have independent witnesses. I was told NO!! I asked if I could read the security guards statements. I was told NO!! They were written in Dutch. I asked for copies of them. I was told NO!! I asked for the security guards names. I was told NO!! I asked to look at CCTV & was told there are none. We left the boat quietly but as soon as we got off the coach in Amsterdam I was telephoned to say none of us were allowed back on the boat & that our bags have been packed & were left at the ferry terminal. When we picked up our luggage notes were stapled to them saying'' NOT ALLOWED TO SAIL BACK DUE TO VIOLENT & AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOUR'' They wouldn't tell us where the airport was or anything about how to get home. The flight cost 8 of us £145 each & the taxi to the airport was €90. We were all marked by your security guards & Jack was suffering for days after We have an independent witness a man from Birmingham who saw the whole thing & is willing to give a statement. I would advise anyone against travelling with DFDS!!! Unless ofcourse you have men travelling with you because we were a party of 8, 2 teenage boys, 4 young women in their 20s & 2 widows aged 50.

you should contact the maritime and coastguard agency as the company have a duty of care to its passangers and i think they would be interested in investigating DFDS crew members who behave in this way

“Overpriced”

★★★☆☆

written by FREDDYFORG on 09/10/2013

I went over from Newcastle to Amsterdam in my Landcruiser and trailer carrying stuff for my villa on Kefalonia Greece in 2012. It cost me around 250 pounds and was a good crossing and was happy with it. Last Feb I went again with exact same car and trailer full of furniture again for my Kefo villa which cost 250 pounds. At the check in car park the girl ask me what we had on the trailer and I said furniture. I was then pulled over and without anyone checking the load was asked to pay a further 190 pounds because my furniture was classed as freight!!!! A total and utter rip-off but they have you by the short and curlies. If they have these ridiculous small print clauses then why didnt I get stung first time and why don;t they make it more clearer.

“Mini cruse Newcastle to Amsterdam ”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 02/06/2013

The boat.. Not much to do!!!  People drinking own alcohol from cans and wine bottles on the deck. Overpriced food..   We ate the buffet which cost £80 for 2 with 1 drink each. The food was excellent but not worth the money we paid. We also ate at the cafe which is very over priced but the portions were big.  Casino is only a few tables and slot machines more like a arcade. bar was ok it had a guitarist who was singing songs.  The boat was clean.  The cabin was clean but the wall are super thin on all sides so we can hear everything in the other cabins. Staff was very good 10 out of 10.  Free transfer to amsterdam thumbs up for that. We were only given 4 hours to return back to the bus which is very short considering it took so long to get there which made the trip NOT worth it.

“Great Value”

★★★★★

written by on 02/06/2013

We travelled as a group of four and got a great deal. Interestingly when we rang DFDS Seaways direct for a price we found there was a £10 booking fee. A friend told me to ring Amsterdam Mini Cruise as you do not pay the booking fee when you ring this number. T Loads to do on the boat and prices weren't as high as I expected. Will definitely do this again

“Very Pleasant Trip”

★★★★☆

written by Richard1964 on 31/05/2013

The DFDS mini cruise from Newcastle to Amsterdam was a step above what we expected. While it was never going to be at the same level as a full cruise, it was definitely a step up from a ferry. The cabins are very basic but this is reflected in the price. The food choice in the 7 seas buffet restaurant, although overpriced, is excellent and worth booking in advance as we did. Drinks prices are not cheap but probably what you'd expect to pay in a medium quality hotel and, if you look hard, you can find some bargains here too. Everything is priced in Euros so the exchange rate does make a difference (£ are accepted everywhere too). Prices in the onboard shop are excessive but even here there are some bargains to be had. Arrival in the port was delayed by about half an hour which, although unavoidable, wasn't apologised for which was disappointing. Disembarkation at the port was a nightmare taking nearly 45 minutes to get through passport control and on to the coach for transportation into Amsterdam thus reducing considerably time available in the City. The entertainment on the ship both ways was of a pretty good standard and throughout the trip staff were very pleasant and helpful.

“avoid if you can”

★☆☆☆☆

Selling tickets for the motorist having to park their cars in narrow corridor of Deck 4 and climbing two floors up afterwards is an insult in XXI century. Those who managed to leave their cars through the half opened door on the one side of the car only and managed to pull their hand luggage out have to squeeze between multiple ribboned steel hooks hanging from the wall and being pulled down by people passing along this corridor and the cars parked in front of them. I consider myself lucky to see one falling few inches only from my car. Nobody responded to the group of young drunk men behaving loudly during the evening. ''The best buy '' Clarins hand cream had 3 different prices in the shop, all of them more than 10 pound higher than in Debenhams!

“newcastle to amsterdam great trip”

★★★★☆

written by on 09/05/2013

My mum and i booked a mini break which when I booked I had a 40% off. I booked it online which I was dubious as you had to print it out so i was worried about what i might need so I called to check. We always book an outside lower bed cabin. We have done this trip a few times but that was a few years ago, so didn't think it would be a problem this time round. Easy checking in no waiting about straight on board the ship. When we got on board we had to walk through the car boarding deck 4 which wasn't a good start. Our cabin was on deck 4. We hated it from the moment we stepped into it. It was an outside cabin so we did have a sea view, but it was a 4 bed cabin and the other to beds where up against the wall. Our en suite was tiny it was more toilet/shower as they where both in the same space. Horrible! so we went straight to the desk deck 6. We didn't have a lift so had to walk up to flight if stairs wasn't impressed as my mum isn't great with stairs. At the desk the lady was nice polite however when asked what was wrong with our room I replied it was horrible and tiny hated it and would like another. She had a look on the computer and told me we had to come back 30 mins after we have departed. We wandered about then returned to the desk. There was No more rooms apart from another room like what we already had to which I kindly declined however she did say we could upgrade on our return journey the next day. This cost £30. We where happy with that but dreaded a night in that cabin. Our meals where pre-booked in the Seven Seas. food was very nice, very much enjoyed our meals. I love the bread rolls. We went to the bars drinks weren't to pricey we thought.. after 7hrs on the boat we went back to the cabin. It was hot and very noisy. I slept terribly the noise on the engine I thought it was under my bed that's how loud it was. Next day we took our bags up to the desk for our room change. our day in Amsterdam was good however would love longer in town as we arrived there at 11am ( ship was a little late due to bad weather )l and would be picked back up at 3.30. but it was alright weather was good. We were concerned with the bus back to the docks as it didn't look like it was going to arrive and there was allot of people waiting would there be enough space. No problems though arrived and straight through. We went straight up to the desk and got our keys to our commodore cabin. What a lovely room you could fit 4 of our old cabins into the new one.no loud noises great nights sleep. All in all was a good little mini break. Will doing this trip again very soon.

“Nightmare trip both ways”

★☆☆☆☆

written by snowball101 on 01/05/2013

On the outward bound trip to Amsterdam we went to the main lounge to enjoy the evening entertainment. We were met by over a hundred drunken yobs, jumping on chairs, singing football songs, swearing and out of control. We did a U turn and went in the sports bar next to it. The crew came past us carrying part of the roof after it was pulled down, groups were fighting each other, at one point the lady trying to present the entertainment was shouting on her microphone for more security. There were 2 door staff at the entrance to our bar checking passengers bags for drink who made no attempt to help even after I went over to them. Next morning as we queued in the stairwell waiting to dock two groups of males confronted each other over one of them being beaten up by the other group the night before, the situation was really volatile and disturbing topped off by a member of the crew just standing and watching them going at each other - no intervention. The return journey was no better, groups of males straight on the drink, the singer drowned out by the noise from them and fights breaking out as the night went on. The full experience summed up when we docked at North Shields to be boarded by the police and a number of males taken off under arrest. I submitted a written complaint to DFDS and got a bland reply stating they operate strict control on groups travelling (not by reading these reviews). Bottom line is these ferry trips thrive on stag do and football trips who spend loads of money drinking the bar dry not from reasonable professional people. Considering you can fly from Newcastle to Amsterdam with Easyjet for £25, be there in an hour and spend double the time in Amsterdam, I will not be using DFDS again.

“First boat trip for us to K.Gdns”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 30/04/2013

First impressions were not good and it does not change much in the 2 nights spent on board. The reception staff were very good but the passengers who go on primarily to get blotto on drink make it lousy for everyone else. From going on at 3.30pm there were people drinking and I don't mean the odd drink. It's not good publicity to see adults walking round the boat with drinks in hand or going outside and going past groups with cases of beer on deck, bottles and glasses on outside tables just left for staff to clean up.The cabins are well thought out but could do with extra cleaning in showerrooms. Breakfast is good if paid for with booking. Shops have good stock and well worth a visit. DFDS and others could at least curb the drinking hours on board or do they really care that EVERYONE who pays should enjoy their journey and have a good memory of it!! The one thing that you cannot fault is their organisation so here's hoping they take note because it could have been so good.

“Dfds Newcastle to Amsterdam ”

★★★☆☆

written by Michelle5178 on 13/04/2013

We travelled down on the bus from Glasgow to Newcastle on the Megabus. Very good value! The Dfds bus collects you just past the train station and gets you to the ship in plenty of time. We boarded the ship and made our way to the cabin. Deck 5....not so good. It's very noisy, I always sleep with ear plugs in, thank god I remembered them. It's as if we where sleeping in the Engine Room. Anyway that was fine, if we go again I would rather be on a higher deck. For the £99 we paid and that was travelling on a Saturday we couldn't really grumble. We read reviews and everyone said it was very expensive. Well for two bottles of Tyske it was 10 euro. Fair enough, when you get to Amsterdam it's the same expense. On the ship on our way home we got fish and chips. Now we did smell this cooking which made us hungry. When we got the food we where very disappointed. 18 euros we paid for fish and chips, which was frozen formed fish (like the 4 in a box you get from farmfoods and it cost 2 quid) and 7.50 euros for a plate of chips., again frozen chips. We couldn't even eat them. I'm glad we took our own juice, crisps, chocolate and sandwiches as this kept us going. After the disastrous food we went upstairs and sat in the bar just past the very small casino. There was a band playing, a group of teenagers. I thought they were very good. Was a bit like Glee. They got everyone up dancing anyway. My husband won a bottle of champers with the quiz that followed. So I would recommend this and there was no crazy stag and hen parties that other reviews complained about.

Went on a mini cruise to amsterdam we upgraded to comadore delux cabins which were lovely plus you get the free beer/wine and snacks ,these cabins are right at the front and the lounge has excellent views ,food and drinks are not cheep but if your going to amsterdam and have a meal and drinks there you'll see that it's cheeper on the boat the bars we went in were between €5 and €6.50 per pint and food was very expensive ,but we were aware of this before we traveled overall our trip was very enjoyable cabins and areas of the ship very clean staff were pleasant and helpfull and food etc was good quality we will be returning when it's a bit warmer.

“Horrific”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 10/03/2013

We left on a Friday for a 'mini-cruise' to Amsterdam. The good points: The ship is fairly nice, and our room was as described - I was actually surprised by how comfortable our bed was. The staff were generally very polite and helpful. 'Guitar George' provided wonderful entertainment in the bar. The bad points: Food and drink is an absolute rip-off. We paid 4 euros for a pint of watered down cola! The food was too expensive on-board so we just took our own snacks - don't pay the rip-off prices. The real negative of our 'holiday' was the other passengers - it was almost like a boat full of stag and hen parties. Everyone was drunk from the minute they got on the boat till they left the next morning. I even saw someone drinking from a wine bottle whilst leaving the boat at 9.30am. The problem was that it was not contained - there were arguments, drunken conversations and full-on fights outside our cabin ALL NIGHT - from 7pm to 5am. Even though the corridor was open and they were screaming security did not turn up, so we had to listen to this on and off all night. Why would no-one stop the fights?? We couldn't complain to the staff as we didn't want to leave our cabin, walk through the arguments, to find some staff. This happened on both nights, so we came back from our holiday exhausted as well as irritated. I would not recommend this holiday - maybe it's better during the week, different clientèle, but I won't try it again.

“Exhorbitant cancellation fee”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 26/02/2013

Yesterday my fiance booked a mini cruise online for part of our honeymoon in August this year. This was not a '2 for one' or special offer, just a regular booking. It was shown as a double bedded spacious cabin. The confirmation, however, described a small cabin with bunk beds, so he contacted DFDS by phone but was told that was the only cabin available. Pondering this overnight he decided to cancel the trip altogether but was horrified to be told that the cancellation fee was more than the cost of the trip!!!! How is it possible for any company to charge more than the cost of the holiday when cancelling 6 months in advance and only one day after making the booking???? As they already have his money the cheaper option was to leave the booking as it is and just not turn up. We are absolutely disgusted with this company.

“Valentines Mini Cruise from Newcastle to Amsterdam”

★★★★★

written by on 19/02/2013

Having read a lot of the other reviews I was honestly regretting my fiancée having booked a mini valentine's cruise!!! The drive from Birmingham to Newcastle was bearable took just over 3 hrs... landed at Quays shopping centre which is next to the car park... what a little gem of a shopping centre started shopping like crazy and yes there is a cafe/restaurant and a Subway so ate before we boarded all the reviews were saying the ferry was pricey on board the ferry ...YES the food is Extortionate 40 Euros for a Steak!!. However you have ample opportunity to book your meals before hand so make sure you do!! Also upgrade UPGRADE!!! We originally booked the cheapest bunk bed affair but luckily at the terminal we managed to upgrade to Commodore class and on our return we upgraded to Commodore Plus.. On boarding and leaving the ferry it wasn't the nightmare we were expecting we were greeted by friendly staff and it took no more than 20 mins to get off the ferry.. . the ferry itself is comparable to a 3 star hotel and if you look carefully you will see wear and tear... the ala carte restaurant is fine.. but I am a buffet type of guy and the food was no worse then any 3 star hotel I have stayed in. The on board shop was a delight (for you smokers... 200 B&H silver worked out to £10 cheaper than at the UK) there were some great deals on perfumes, Paco Rabbone (19.99 Euros) jewellery, Pandora charms (40 Euros) etc... The only downside for me was the music!!! Who has heard of Buddy Holly!!! All in all we had a relaxing break there was a lot to do on board and the staff were always courteous and helpful...but the old adage you get what you pay must hold true as there were people moaning... some had there own coffee mugs and didn't want to spend 3.50 Euros... but then again I don't think they have heard of Starbucks. Would I go again... most definitely.
