“One of the best”

★★★★★

written by on 27/11/2013

I owned a lucida 2.2 in the past. I've had numerous cars in my time driving and this car is probably one of the best I owned. Great on fuel, spacious, great to drive..I sold my other one when I list my job and wS out of work, and was gutted to see it go. I am looking out for another mpv and have looked at the zafira and galaxy, but neither have the space these cars have.. So, yes, I am considering having another, and would recommend them to anyone looking for a good mpv.

“Toyota Estima X 4WD 2.2TD 1993”

★★★★☆

written by on 12/09/2013

I have had this vehicle since 2006, and so far have covered almost 100,000 km's. So speedo now reading 210,000 kms. over this time i have replaced the tyres 3 times, current ones still good for at another 10,000 kms. Cambelt once, SADs twice, shocks all round once, radiator cap, brake discs and pads, starter contacts. cost wise it works out on average £130 per year to maintain, excluding insurance and road tax, so can't complain about that. being 4WD it is great when we have had snow storms, and passes much more expensive vehicles with ease and no drama. Have had none of the dreaded head problems, mainly because i keep it serviced regularly, and change the auto gearbox oil annuallly as do i change the coolant. Consumption is not great, around 32mpg at 70, then it is plus 2 tonnes and automatic. It is great for transporting passengers and goods, including a three seater settee. Just been to Torquay and chugged up and down the hills without problem, it won't win races away from the line, just a great old work horse. due for a smaller car now but plan to keep the bus and convert to a 2 person camper, too good to scrap, and won't get much if i sold her, 20 years old this year. They don't make them like this anymore!

“Top notch MPV if you have 92-94 G luxury”

★★★★★

written by Winnyjaye on 01/09/2012

They are really good equip MPV, the diesel engine is a gem for economy driving and plenty of torque despite a majority of them are column shift automatics, top speed is 101mph but happy to cruise at 70mph , get the G luxury and you get electric windows, tilt front sunroof, large electric rear sliding moonroof also air condition/ climate control front and rear.

Some models come with curtains some with rear privacy glass, the 92-94 eminas/lucida G Luxury also comes with captain seats on drivers, middle and rear seats hence the 6 seater with rear armrests down, some later models only have armrest on drivers and middle seats due to dealer options when bought otherwise the rest came with bench seats which is still good as all middle seats can swivel to face the rear seats all middle seats also have rear facing seatbelts so adults can chat amongst themselves or if your lucky to buy one with the option of a picnic table and chairs you can enjoy a picnic, since it only has 1 sliding door a TV screen can be fitted so they could watch TV or children can play games, console.

The 4wd version "X luxury" is quite good in the snow but not a Jeep so don't try off roading and going in deep puddles unless you want engine problems, when it comes to fuel consumption the 2.2TD are quite good for their age compared to other large turbo diesels, a lot of people get the mk1 Emina and Lucida mixed up dispite the name is on the bootlid above the registration plate, The emina has a 6 light (4 rectangle + 2 fog lamps recessed in the plastic glass chrome grill.

The Lucida is a 4 light (2 rectangle + 2 square foglamps and a matted grill) and where the indicator on the Lucida and other later Emina is next to the headlamp the indicators on the 92-94 Emina is located in the bumper accompanied by night cornering lights, to be honest the 92-94 Emina is quite prettier to look at as it has a cleaner front end and the fog lamp grill sets it off compared to the others and looks a lot better in a brighter metallic shade.

Now for the bad points, despite the engine is mid mounted at 75 degrees it has an accessory driveshaft via SADS at the front which powers the aircon, fan, alternator and power steering pump which is not bad for weight distribution and handling if maintained properly (they vibrate if not properly balanced),also to work on it you need to pull out the whole front seats and if your looking for a workshop manual............ Well keep looking as you will only get a small handbook and a bunch of do gooders will help you by selling you a workshop CD which is a bit helpful, so if your a careful driver who loves a fancy MPV the Emina/Lucida TD it's worth a shot just don't buy one if your thinking of thrashing one, look after it and it will serve you well

“JUST BRILLIANT”

★★★★★

written by caveman on 25/03/2012

I have had my Lucy for 8 years K plate cost £3500 with 81000k or was that 120000k or was that 174000k on the clock never really got to the bottom of that one. Warning the Lucy's can and are clocked mine was by over 80000k, got a hugh discount thanks trading standards. The car has been a trouble free work horse, passed all MOT's first time, MPG is fare 35mpg. Over the eight years i have fitted new rear wheel bearing, upgraded the suspension, large capacity radiator, union joints on prop and just fitted new starter motor. For a car of its age that's not bad for the return it's given me and the family of wife, four dogs, two mountain bike and camping gear. Well done Toyota, but you are having a joke when you replaced the Previa with the Verso there is no contest, Lucy, Previa, Estima what ever you want to call it, i call it "A GREAT VEHICLE".

“Magic Bus”

★★★★☆

written by skin2706 on 15/02/2012

Hi, I have owned several Estima's, I bought my first one which was an "M" plate, when I first took it home I thought "Oh My God, what have I done"? But after a few weeks I must say I was really pleasantly suprised with the Ole Bus! I used it for work, taking myself and two others + all our working kit (heavy lot), up and down the M4, M5, it saved me a fortune in hire costs! Yes the heads can be a problem, but I bought a Larger core radiator off Ebay, filled the system up with neat anti-freeze, serviced her every 10,000 miles and apart from tyres, brakepads and putting on a stainless exhaust, it was troublefree and really ate up the miles on the motorways, only complaint is the dip beam headlights like candles! But all in all a cracking, versatile vehicle, since the first one, I have owned 4 others, lovely, comfortable driving position.

written by on 23/01/2012

This has been the best car we have ever owned. Reliable, practical, comfortable, great touring vehicle. Reasonably economical, does about 500 km on a tank of diesel. The only fault she has is tends to overheat on hot days if climbing up steep hills. We solve this by turning on the heaters full blast until we go down the hill and cool her off. This is only a problem if driving up mountains, which we don't do too often!!. Unfortunately, now I do not have people to mover any more, we will have to let her go and find a smaller car. I know I will cry when she is sold, my beautiful "moon bus"

Yes it will be the ECT button maybe the original one failed so previous owner must have fitted a replacement one, it's like a sports mode linked to the transmission via the ECU so you get a bit of a longer range run before it changes gear from it and when switched off it changes down quicker to save engine rev not sure but try toyota estima owners club they will help

Had my 2.2 Ltr Diesel Auto Lucida since April 2003.The inadequate radiator (16mm thick) which I eventally replaced with a 32mm one, caused so much damage(due to my negligence, driving to the top of the French Alps fully loaded, time after time)I had to replace the engine. Since the radiator and engine change I've had many thousands of trouble free miles. When purchasing one just check the radiator and if it's only 16mm thick then get it replaced,at around £90 it's a must.Considering it's weight,it's also good on fuel even fully loaded which it usually is. It's incredibly reliable even in freezing conditions. It's only down side is the acceleration rate which is a little slow as you'd expect from this type of vehicle.

written by on 10/05/2010

I brought a estima 2.2td 4x4 on a k plate for £630. Ticked all the boxes as we have 3 kids. Its the top of the range G version so has thas the captain seats which are very comfy. It has alot of extras and is so easy to drive and with the parking sensor front and back it easy to park.
so now the dissapointing bit, i dident even have it a week when sitting at a junction a cloud of blue smoke and a few miles down the road over heated. I had it towed home with suspected cracked head, so drained water out add k-seal, serviced it and so far all is good, when it goes again ill have a recon engine but in at only £725 so not to bad, wworth doing as its perfect other wise and parts are cheap. I would highly recommend one but bear in mind they do have head problems so find one that has had a new head!

Me and the missus has just been proud owners of our lucida, we are very impressed with everything about it. After reading other peoples reviews we have found some common problems ie: interior light above the side door not working, after reading what some1 wrote on how much they cost just for a bulb we are quite happy to fumble around in the dark its more fun lol

I love my Estima Lucida! I am new to the Estima family by only a few days though i used to drive a Toyota Spacecruiser about 6 years ago.
Its not just practical with 8 seats, but necessary in my family as with 4 kids ranging from 13 to 1years old, space in our car is exactly what we need especially when u add myself and partner.
Surprisingly the drive is so fantastic, with 2.2 engine & power-steering, for such a big motor its amazing how easy&powerful it feels.
The only drawback would be not having a manual-but i think it would be written in Japanese anyway,so no good for me lol.

★★★☆☆

written by on 24/07/2009

I have had a 1996 imported Lucida for 5 years now. Great for the whole family, 8 seats plus luggage space, nothing else can match this at the price. 2.2 diesel auto returns nearly 30mpgin town and nearly 40mpg on a run (not driven hard). The only spare part I've needed so far is an interior light bulb for above the side door. £20 from local Toyota dealer. What do they think it, is a bloody chandelier? I found a copy on the internet locally for £10. Still a rip off. So vehicle is great as long as you don't have to buy spares from Toyota. Rear seats are a bit of a struggle to get in and out for the elderly or slightly infirm.

written by bargainbuya on 28/01/2009

I have owned my Toyota Previa for one year, had 58,000 on the clock when bought it, paid £1200 with toyota service history from when it had been imported, i've owned 2 spacecruisers and 2 townaces before i bought this, was cautious at first due to known cylinder head weaknesses. i check my oil and water weekly, without fail, have covered 20,000 miles + in one year and have been all around uk with caravan in tow, recent excursion was to cornwall for a week ,8 of us in car + luggage and caravan,av.25 mpg and covered 1200miles in a week, only had one fault since owning that was the oil header tank pump has packed up (common fault), just sourcing new one now. best bit of advice i can give, get the best possible one you can afford, off of an owner who knows serviciing intervals, i change oil and filter every 5000 miles, but i use mine as an everyday car for work aswell, make sure cambelt recently changed, v expensive £300+ job. these cars do exactly what they are supposed to do, be reliable, comfortable, and economical.
Very economical, 30+ mpg, v spacious, excellent bus for lugging kids, stuff, v reliable, never let me down, excellent value for money. Simply no comparism to inferior rivals. 9 out of 10

Love everything about the Toyota Estima, having been the owner of an estima and every weekend for 3 years it carried 7 people (4 adults & 3 children) shopping and items of furniture including a 3 seater sofa. Overall performance for a people carrier in my opinion is second to none.

written by mjltigger on 25/03/2008

Overall the Toyota Estima I owned for two years was fantastic, nothing I did to it ever made it flinch or cause me any problems right up to the end when the head went. I had quotes for the work as low as £1000 and with that work done I know that the car would have been good for many more years however at the time I needed a vehicle instantly so had to trade it in. As proof of how well respected these vehicles are, I even managed to get a good price for it then from a dealer who knew his stuff about the vehicles. I am in the market for another one now and would not hesitate to suggest you get one just be careful of unscrupulous garages that will tut and complain that the vehicles are a pig to work on and parts are impossible to find. Try joining a community that can help you and suggest things before you take it to a garage...

I found this review very helpful because I'm thinking about changing my present car for another MPV and am researching what's around, how much, mpg, spares, etc.
<br/>I bought a Mazda Bongo recently, it's a beautiful Motor, bags of room, very well designed, very comfortable, easy to drive and quite economical on diesel, but I have a prolapsed disc problem and it's a reet bugga to get in and out of, so I'm relunctantly selling it, hence my looking at easier to get in & out of MPV's.

“I really wish you ignorant people would STOP calling...”

★★★★☆

written by on 23/01/2008

I really wish you ignorant people would STOP calling the imported Estima, Lucida and Emina a Previa.

The Previa is a UK built vehicle with a PETROL 2.4L engine that does NOT repeat NOT suffer cracked cylinder heads. This problem is 100% dedicated to the 2.2TD DIESEL engine found exclusively and ONLY on the imported cars. The UK built Previa is one of the MOST reliable cars on the road whilst the imported cars are 110% guaranteed to suffer a cracked head sooner or later.

What's more even though from a distance the Previa and the imports look similar the imported Lucida's and Emina's are a narrower and overall a smaller car than the Previa. ONLY the true ESTIMA (has no other name on it) is identical to the Previa not only in size but also in that it too has the superbly reliable PETROL engine.

If you want to buy an IMPORT make sure it is fitted with the PETROL engine otherwise start saving at least 1500-2000 to have the cylinder head changed.

Seems like your equally as ignorant.Previas,petrol. suffer from blown head gaskets, and thats fact. And diesels, are more robust, more than likely to out last the petrol plus the specs are superior to the previa.More people who own a Toyota would much prefer The Diesel version over the Petrol.

Info. 1, 1992-1998 The ESTIMA IS THE PREVIA, it shares the same 2.4 petrol engine, it has the same eggplant bodyshape as the Previa, same grill, same interior same everything as the Previa, but with a bit more luxury as it is built and still in Japan and they get a better choice as that's where the PREVIA is originally from japan, but built for the uk market. Info 2. the other 2 estimas (Emina and Lucida) are both diesels which were also built in Japan aside of the Estima/Previa and are slightly smaller, and had a 2.2 turbodiesel engine to fit in Japanese small car Tax system, quite a lot of them were imported (2003) over the uk which some were equipped with luxury trim also all previa are basic trimmed also it was pointless importing the Toyota ESTIMA 2.4 petrol over as there as it would have been confusing knowing the uk market already have them rebadged aka TOYOTA PREVIA also with all the luxury it would have outclassed the PREVIA itself and yes they do suffer from a cracked block due to bad overheating, remedy is replace the thin 16mm rad for a 32mm heavy duty version, you will notice vast difference so before you start having a go at estima owners, DO YOUR HOMEWORK, to round it off, the ESTIMA is a PREVIA and the PREVIA IS THE ESTIMA, as same saying the Emina is a Lucida and the Lucida is the Emina just trim difference on all 4 vehicles they all have the same 2wd and 4wd & mid engine layout all have 4drs, it's only difference is the large body size & petrol on the big estima/previa and small body & diesel on the emina/lucida

★★★★★

written by on 02/01/2008

In 2003 my wifes father passed on and had only 2 weeks before, bought an imported Lucida. As a result it was passed on to myself.
I've had it ever since, itss a 1992 2.2 TDI and I adore it.
It's very forgiving with its handling, powerful and can return 35mpg without issue. Passed the first 2 MOTs without any work needing to be done at all, since then I've only had to replace the starter motor at £129.99 including fitting and a few bulbs.
The space is wonderful and the seats are nice and comfortable as I work all over the country I'm very pleased about this! Only niggles are, it eats rear tyres but that's because of me loading it up to the hilt every week. The heat in the back I have been warned with the aircon off is pretty rough in the sun and the fact I have to have it serviced every 5,500 miles.
All in all I can honestly say its the best car I've had. When I got it, it had 22,000 miles and now it had 285,000 and still going strong. If you're looking for a good family workhorse this is it!

And for everyone who's concerned about the Lucida being a grey import don't panic. When I went to my local Toyota dealer for a service the manager asked me to leave. I've found over the last few years there are many specialists all over the country who know everything there is to know about these cars and can always help you with parts and work and 99% are amazing in my experience.

I'd recommend this car to anyone and good luck, I hope you find this useful.
