Value for money and has done a power of work over last 3 years. Eventually the tines broke from use but scarifier attachment is still good. Spare tines are hard to find but eventually identified a supplier. They are type 6 tynes, 50mm long with hole diameter 12mm to fit a 10mm shaft. I could only find one supplier, Solent tools. They were easy to replace. Hope this helps.

Im a professional gardener and i love this scarifier. I havent used the rake part of it but the blade just eats through moss and does such a quick job. You actually have to be careful that you are don't hit any paving as it would chip it. I managed to blunt the blade and so called B and Q customer service who gave me the no for the Mc Allister customer service. They are sending me a new blade free of charge. I was not expecting that. Was assuming i would pay for it.

SORT OF WORKED- NEEDED NEW TINES - BUT B AND Q NOT HONOURED AFTER SALES - NO SPARE PARTS AVAILABLE - UNETHICAL SALE

I have had this scarifier for about 2 years, during this time I have found and resolved several issues...I think these are the important points good and bad. 1. Easy to assemble, long cord, easy to adjust height of rake... 2. The lawn MUST MUST MUST be cut with a mower on its lowest setting PRIOR to use.. 3. Put the raker on its highest setting, 4. DO NOT connect the grass box, it fills up in seconds and jams the machine so that it overheats, if it does overheat it will stop, let it cool overnight and it will probably be ok... 5. using some string or cable ties etc clip up the back flap, but only part way...if you put it right up stones and bits will hit your legs, 6. ok ready to start..go forward ONLY, slowly...don't run over hard surfaces like a path or tyne will break. after use use a lawnmower again, this is to pick up the mess, if there is lots then rake by hand into piles , remove, then cut grass (collecting bits left on lawn)... you will be amazed at how much thatch (dead grass) and moss will be removed. even after all this you may need a blower to get rid of the bits... now the important part.... Use a moss killer which also feeds the lawn, then a week later a weedkiller...its ok to use a moss, weed and feed but they are not as effective.. about 2 weeks later the moss you didn't get first time will be black... cut grass, rake over lawn with rake section again etc etc... when finished change the tyne unit for the one with blades. go up and down then side to side, this cuts slots to get water to grass roots.... sprinkle grass seed where required and maybe some lawn dressing soil.... This scarifier does what it says EXCEPT..... the tynes snap easily!!! they are a fiddle to replace and they cost about £28 a set.. the blades work well... so in short, it works well, ON A SMALL LAWN...the grass box is useless , and if you have a lawn over 10m x 10m forget this unit... For me I would get one with a box in front so i could empty on the go or a bigger scarifier

this must be the worst thing i have ever had from b&q.total junk grass box doesent fill racker tynes just brake off and b&q say we dont do this model now so no parts, total rip off for a £100

Motor siezed after overheating on 3rd season. First season fine, 2nd season it started overheating and thermal cutout activated. Cleaned all ventilation slots. 3rd season had 10 minutes running and it siezed completely. Thhis company makes cheap stuff that really doesn't last. The collector box is useless and fills in about 5 seconds. Overall, a bad buy.

This scarifier has a 2 year warranty. Which means it will rake your lawn 2 or3 times before it requires some serious work on it. I don't think anyone will repair this and I am not very confident myself although I was a plant fitter. I will be surprised if parts are available DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL

The unit lasted 2 years and 3 months but hard to find spares it seemed not rugged enough for the work.

Very unhappy to report that the wheel fell off ive lost the griping clip so it just rolls off poor quallity if this happens all the time
Written on: 06/10/2016
Same here. Used once last year, went to use it again this morning and both wheels are dropping off. I can hear the clips inside the wheels and need to work out how to get to them. This is our second unit - the first unit's motor burned out half way through our rear lawn the day after delivery and B&Q had to issue a replacement.

Took longer to assemble the item than its actual useage. After ten minutes of lawnraking - on a newly (short) cut lawn a real wheel fell off! Lawnraking over that ten minutes was vigorous - tho collection not brilliant. In fairness the store did refund the price paid - not willing to try a replacement - far too flimsy.

I have only used the raker attachment. Having used it 6 times over 2 years 10 of the 24 Tines have snapped off. Replacements are expensive at £23 for all 24 Tines from one supplier who seems to have cornered the market for this machine, so no competition on price. Instead of paying this exhorbitant price, I will start using the scarifier attachment on the top (No 1) setting and see how I get on. I would not buy this MacAllister Scarifier again and I would not recommend it to anyone because of the cheap metal used in the Rake Tines.

Used this product 4 times and in that time the"rake" tines have all detached, the scarifier blade's worn down and the drive shaft come out the side of the plastic housing! On closer inspection the drive shaft enclosure is made of plastic which shows how poorly this product is designed. Apart from that the collection bag is of no use and does not pick up any moss.A very poor quality product which should be removed sale in my opinion.

The lawn rake and scarifier worked OK for a small garden. The grass/moss collection is next to useless. Its 1 year old and used 3 times and the motor has burnt out without any obvious cause beyond it being a poor quality product.
written by Billwood68 on 21/03/2016
My McAllister 1400 has been used a maximum of 6 times. Only 1 "rake" attachment remaining. This item is just so disappointing. I would be embarrassed to loan out to a neighbour. Collection box is a ludicrous design. Where can I buy spare parts from?

This product is made specially for B&Q. Assembly was quite straightforward although fitting the grass bag over the frame was slightly difficult. The first problem arose when trying to attach the grass bag to the unit which is very awkward. However, the real problem was that when using the rake rather than the scarifier, only around half of the raked up material (mostly dead moss) was collected in the grass box. The rest was left in a series of untidy piles on the lawn. I only used it once and took it back to B&Q the next day for a full refund. The chap on the returns desk needed persuading and only agreed to the refund when I showed him a picture of my lawn covered in ugly small piles of dead moss. I am quite amazed that the Which? Organisation mentioned a similar version of this machine as a Best Buy.
Written on: 22/04/2016
You get what you pay for though, my lawnmower doesn't collect all the grass it cuts, doesn't mean it's not good at cutting grass though.. And the fact that your lawn was covered in small lumps of dead moss kind of tells us that it did what it was supposed to and if I worked there I'd tell you to chase yourself for a full refund.. Lol just sayin.

Rakes the moss ok, (so far) but just won't collect the detritus. At age 66 I can't be faffing about with a hand rake and plastic bags so I have to get my mower out, raise the wheels and use it as a vacuum cleaner. The macallister collection box is, to my mind, about 10% efficient and my lawn mower collection box about 95% efficient. I can't be Ar$ed to unmantle and rebox it and take it back to B&Q so have accepted that it is a poor buy. Fortunately, now that I have thrown the collecting box in the bin, the machine takes up less space in my shed (man cave). Honest advice? If you can afford it go for the Bosch. If not accept that for the sale price of 72 quid your getting something that doesn't do what it says on the tin

Very poor product. Bought last year used one and used this month again - all the wire tangs totally trashed. Very poor collector bag arrangement. Certainly not worth the money. Poor design and poor performance and NO service or repair back up from B&Q
written by 25Glass on 21/04/2015
The machine looked good value and did the job but mine stopped working the second time I used it. Maybe I was unlucky, but I asked for a refund. B&Q were happy to refund the money.

The bag is difficult to put on, it only fills about a third. It rips up to much of the lawn. I wish I had sent it back. Perhaps I would sell it on a car boot sale for less than £1.0

Photograph tines so you put the new ones back facing same direction. On the opposite side from the roller you will see a pin that goes through the bar jammed up against then last tine. Knock that pin out with a small hammer and something similar to a small screwdriver or a nail or similar. It is only held by friction. All the tines will then slip off the bar. Replacement is the reverse procedure.
