Tony27nine's review of Westwood T1600H Lawn Tractor

“Incredibly frustrating mix of brilliance and awfulness”

★★☆☆☆

written by Tony27nine on 07/05/2012

I needed a tractor to cut grass, collect the clippings and roll and stripe the lawn. I also needed a tractor to tow a roller and trailer. In allI I've around 2 acres of lawn / grass.
The Westwood T1600H was recommended as it has a powered grass collector with roller which avoided the need to mulch and unlike most tractors actually rolled the lawn too.
The tractor has a Kawasaki twin engine of 22 HP. The collector works brilliantly however with a max speed of about 5.5 mph you need to have a grass pile quite close to the lawns if the mowing isn't going to take forever.
The tractor is quite large with the collector on the back but is surprisingly agile despite this.
The problems..
The switchgear and dashboard are frankly a joke. You can't read the display in sunlight of any strength - that means you can unexpectedly run out of fuel where you'd rather not. You can't ell whether the cutter drive is engaged either as the on off is a toggle switch. The mower broke down within two hours of delivery due to a duff ignition switch and again after 10 hours of use. On both occasions it burnt out the ignition circuit due to a horribly cheap switch.
A fantastic tractor which would do a great job and, with a Kawasaki engine probably last years, let down by abysmally poor switchgear.

As an addendum i must add that the after-sales service of the manufacturer must score 10 out of 10 - quick, understanding, honest and better that I've experienced in years. Also they're replacing the switches with a different kind so the problem should disappear. This would make it a very capable piece of kit and probably knock it back to 5 stars.

Hi, apologies but it was done under warranty around 10 years ago and as far as I can recall there wasn't an obvious difference when I got the tractor back from the shop.
