“Very satisfied”

I bought my SP536ES from B&Q in 2006 and have found that mechanically it has never let me down. Unfortunately the battery for the electric starter packed up in 2011 but it starts on the first pull of the cord ever since. I would add my lawn is not a small one. It is quite heavy t push when motor not running but the self-propelled motor is excellent.

“How wrong can you be ?”

★★☆☆☆

written by Pete.L on 04/06/2013

I always believed that Mountfield represented good quality. Just how wrong can you be ? My SP536ES has got to be the worst piece of machinery I have ever bought. Things keep breaking. In fact when I bought a spare part from a dealer, he asked me how many I wanted ! The drive belt keeps falling off. The brittle plastic belt guard has shattered. The battery compartment has fallen apart. The air filter cover doesn't fit properly, causing it to fall off, leaving the filter bouncing across the lawn. The locating lugs for the blade have broken. I've only had the damned thing two years. And it's difficult to get spare parts here in France. The last mower I bought cost me less than £100 over here. I lasted 12 years or more. (and still works), so why did I waste my money on a Mountfield.

“probably the worst lawn mower in the world”

★☆☆☆☆

written by sadie1 on 11/03/2013

I brought the lawn mower in 2010 right from the start it would not start (forgive the pun)!! phoned B and Q told me to go to local agent who told me I had hit a stone! I told him that, that would have been a miracle since the machine had not started since coming out the box!. 1 year on noticed oil coming out of the crankcase I took it to a local lawn mower repair centre, after laughing and saying not another idiot buying one of these he told me that the engine is made in china and we would get to know each other well due to the amount of time it wold be in the workshop!!My advice is steer well away and buy something with abriggs and stratton or honda engine,oh and also not from B&Q

“Poor build quality”

★☆☆☆☆

written by gryoungs on 21/07/2012

Bought a Mountfield from B and Q mistakenly thinking it was a quality product. Had it two years. The gear cable has snapped twice (repaired under warranty) but now the front wheel assembly has sheared off (and the other wheel does not look too robust (the mower is now out of warranty). Each front wheel is only held in place by a plastic housing which is far too flimsy.

“disappointing build quality”

written by on 27/06/2012

bought it 2 years ago, starts easily, cuts well but front wheel assembly fell off inside 6 months , had to take to local agent for repair, the handle fixing bolts constantly work loose, the grassbox is difficult to empty due to the wedge shape of it in common with other mowers-do the designers ever try the products before sales begin?, now the petrol tank has started to leak,I will not buy another mountfield product based on this experience

i have a very large garden and should have a ride on mower, but i bought this machine as it was more affordable. i use this machine weekly and it has never caused me any trouble .It starts first time and the motor pulls it up very steep slopes .I would highly recommend this mower.

“536 commercial use”

★★★★☆

written by on 06/07/2011

Bought 2 years ago from B and Q on special offier. Now selling at over twice the price. I use it for semi commercial use and it is used most days of the week Three gardens are large. Tennis court plus. Have found it to be a top notch machine. Runs sometimes for three hours with no hiccups. Gives a beautiful cut complete with stripes. It is amply fast enough for a good cut but speed can be increased by turning the throttle stop screw. One of the beast lawnmowers I have used.

“Appalling Service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jsluke on 05/06/2011

Earlier this week I purchased a Mountfield Mower. After assembling the mower, I started it and immediately it over-reved. When I cut the engine there was a distinct smell of burning and a load of grey smoke. I called the Mountfield Helpline on the instructions and was informed that the spring on the throttle cable was probably bent. I was told that I should call a local agent to have the mower repaired. I was told that I would have to cover the cost of transporting the mower to the agent. It was also made clear to me that I was responsible for making all the arrangements to rectify the fault. The helpline operator stated that they had given me a solution to the problem. There was no acknowledgement of the fact that the "solution" involved extra cost, time and hassle for me. Having paid several hundred pounds for the mower I feel that this is completely unhelpful. This was a brand new mower that didn't work out of the box. Why should I have to rectify (including additional expense) an error made by Mountfield?

Wish I'd read the reviews before splashing the cash on this. Pretty disappointing to be honest, my trusty flymo (12 years old) that broke was far better.

I was totally duped into the power drive feature - which in my opinion is pretty useless. My garden is larger than average and this doesn't help in the slighest.

The only positive for me is the grass collector that works quite well.

Bought this machine last year (as temp replacement for commercial use) and it has now run for around 150 hours.

Both front wheel plates broke and replacements were sent free from mountfield for me to fit, else I could take it to a dealer.

It is slow from factory, but you can adjust the running speed by tweaking the throttle stop screw above air filter. Zoom!!

It is heavy, has wide cut and good on fuel.

It was a good price at B+Q, wouldn't want to pay the prices elsewhere. It really isn't very strong, the front wheel is off, and is very poorly built. Watch the plastic covers over gears too, as the can chafe out quite easily. I can't see it's built to last. A lot of plastic.

Too slow, front wheel mounts too flimsy (just broken one and having real trouble getting replacements), can't deal with THICK grass it just clogs up,the protection for the drive belt isn't up to it and therefore belt gets clogged with grass clippings, drive belt jumps off (but easy to fix - if you're prepared to cut a bit of plastic to get in to it, same as repair companies would), broke the bit of metal that retains the starter cord on the 4th use, the difficulty getting spares. Basically only buy if you can't afford ANYTHING else.

“I have only used the Mountfield SP536 twice since...”

★★★★★

written by on 11/09/2010

I have only used the Mountfield SP536 twice since buying it and I am more than happy with the results. It was very easy to assemble and started first time. It left a nice tidy cut and had no problems collecting long damp grass (about 6") on the second shortest setting.

The power drive is the perfect speed for my liking, not slow at all. The mower itself is a bit on the heavy side but the power drive more than makes up for this.

My only complaint, and I'm being really picky here, is that you have to adjust the front wheels individually. A single height adjuster would make this mower perfect.

Who knows how it will stand the test of time but so far so good!

“What a load of rubbish!! ”

What a load of rubbish!!
Used only once... the power drive is like a snails pace.
the grass collector does not sit correctly so you get covered in grass.

The staff at B&Q are a disgrace they diddn't want to know and expect you to drive around the country taking the faulty good to a service agent.

DON'T TOUCH A MOUNTFIELD MOWER WITH A BARGE POLE!!!

Bought the Mountfield 536 yesterday and I may be the best purchase yet this year. Going from a Flymo, the difference is like night & day.
The unit was easy to assemble and cut my large lawns in no time.
I read the review about the unit being slow and this is rubbish.
Got 15% extra off from B & Q which made it even better.

If you want a petrol mover....I would strongly recommend buying this model

Disappointing - it's very slow - I want to push it but it won't go any faster than a slow dawdle - I bought the machine from B&Q a couple of days ago - local dealer has had a look but says that my machine is typical.

After reading the reviews on this website for the Mountfield HP474, i decided against that model and went for the 'top of the range' as it was billed. I assembled it, followed all of the instructions, and managed to mow roughly a strip of grass 2 metres long before the engine cut out. It took me 20 minutes to get it going again. I then managed to cut enough grass to fill the grass box, but when I tried to start the mower again, it refused. After about 20 pulls on the start cord, it snapped - so had the engine actually worked, the pull cord would still have snapped quite early on in the mowers life. I took it straight back and demanded a full refund, which to be fair to B&Q, they gave me. I wont touch a Mountfield again.
