Nearly burnt my kitchen down. Have found other similar reviews. Beware.

This is a fats boiling kettle. It looks good and the blue and red lights are a stylish gimick - while they work. Trouble is, the red, boiling, light failed after a few months (can't remember how many but less than a year I think). Now the filter mesh has perished. I think that it also taking longer to switch off once boiled, than it used to.

HAD THE KETTLE JUST OVER 1 YEAR. THE RED BOILING LIGHT STOPPED WORKING. THE FRONT HAS GONE YELLOW AND FLAKED OFF. WAS A VERY GOOD LOOKING KETTLE IN THE BEGINNING NOW AN EYE SAW, MAY AS WELL BUY THE CHEAPER PLAINER MODELS WITH NO FUSS!!

I have had a jk46 model for just under two years. The lower part of the plastic body has gone badly yellow, and started to turn to powder. It then began to thin and crack, and the other day, my finger went right through, leaving a hole, and of course, a useless kettle. Is this not a health and safety issue? They should all be recalled. I have e-mailed them with photos but they will not reply.

After not many months the body of our Breville JK15 cracked all over the place and the kettle discouloured heavily. Whilst it still worked it was an absolute eyesore.
If you are proud of the way your kitchen looks, this isnt one for you, but for boiling water up in a shed or garage, yeh its ok.

I also have had a Breville JK15 Lightening Kettle for over a year now; it looks really cool, I like the way it lights up and the speed it boils water, but the spout and part of the lid has now deteriorated so much that it does not look safe to use.
The plastic glossy surface looks like it has been eaten away and left it powdery looking.
Even though the kettle looks good; I would have thought a company like Breville would have used better materials in the manufacturing of this kettle perhaps?
I also would not buy another Kettle from this company.

Would recommend this Breville JK15 Lightening to anyone - we've had ours for years & the limescale filter has only just broken down - the kettle still works perfectly - just got the white lumpy bits of limscale back & can't seem to find a replacement filter

I've had this kettle for 2 years now and I have enjoyed its colourful illumination. It boils quickly and has a stand-by function to remain at boiling, indicated by an additional ring of red lights in the base. Unfortunately it's now unsafe to use. The lid opening mechanism soon deteriorated becoming difficult to open. However, this was soon solved by filling through its spout. The filter soon became hardened with lime scale and disintegrated. The worst thing is the way the plastic deteriorated allowing water to pass through the kettle walls and onto and around the electrics of the base. The plastic used is clearly substandard and means that I would not purchase another plastic kettle from Breville. Great kettle let down by a few points but mainly the safety issue of deterioration of the kettle's plastic body allowing water to pass through onto the electric base.

I have had this kettle for 18 months and it has been used everyday with no problem. My only gripe is the trouble I have replacing the filter. It is very hard to find a stockist and Pulse, because they couldn't take plastic, expect me to line up at the post office for hours to buy postal orders. I have been waiting for 2 weeks for their IT to be fixed so they can take CC payments.

I have had the kettle 2 years now and had a problem with the lid not opening. On examination I found that one of the plastic retaining lugs had worn through as there was now white grease applied to it. Although it was on the other lug opposite.
Worse still I contacted the only company we have to contact called 'Pulse Home Products' and they were unable to supply the simple plastic part. They could or would only supply the small lime filter - nothing else. (About as useful as a chocolate tea pot - pardon the intentional pun)
Worse still when asked, they would not give me the name of the company that makes\assembles them except to say they are in the far east. Although I stressed that if I had the name and the country I would contact them as it would be no problem for me at all, they blankly refused. I do not think I have ever contacted a more negative support company ever in my 63 years.
In view of the lack of parts and support I would strongly recomend that no one should bother with any Breville products at all. I am most dissapointed which is a shame as it was a good kettle.

I have had this kettle for well over six months now, and it is the best kettle we have ever owned.
It boils quickly, has a good capacity, can be filled through the spout, and lights up.
This last function is great for first thing on those dark winter mornings when you don't want to turn the harsh kitchen lights on. You can turn it on and see if there is enough water in for your morning cuppa, and I have even buttered toast by its gentle light.
If you were feeling really wasteful, there is a button that keeps the water hot all the time.
The only downside is that it is difficult to tell how much water to put in. I always seem to over fill it, maybe I'm just thick. Anyway, I have not had the deterioration that other reviewers have had.

I had a Philips kettle before this Breville JK15 Lightening and it lasted 6 years - this one I have had just over 12 months and now would not buy another from this company because of the above.

You don't only buy the Breville JK15 Ligthening kettle to boil water; you buy it for its appearance and its internal illumination. However, we purchased the kettle for our kitchen just over 12 months ago, and its appearance has deteriorated so much, it looks more like it's 10 years old.
The body of the kettle has yellowed all around the area that gets hot, and the plastic has cracked. The kettle looks so rough that we are now having to replace it, purely on cosmetic grounds. After several e-mails which were completely ignored by Breville; eventually, I sent pictures of the kettle to Breville, and all they could offer was that I sent it back and they would investigate! So how am I going to make a cuppa whilst it's away? The pictures I sent were quite clear, and I would have expected a direct replacement. However, not the case with Breville.
As I said earlier; in terms of boiling water, it's fantastic, but if I were you I wouldn't spend the extra money for this kettles appearance, because from my experience, that only lasts a very short time.

Breville came up trumps, doing the right thing for a customer by sending me a brand new replacement.

<br>It's a shame I had to moan so much to them, and it would have been nice if they reacted positively in the first place. However, the fact is that they did come through (however it took contacting the parent company "Alba") and threatening to contact their Chairman before they apologised and did what they should have.

I really like the Breville JK15 Lightening kettle. It is fast to reach boiling, and it has the ability to keep warm so you do not need to reboil it, which is very handy at breakfast time.
It lights up blue when it is boiling, which looks very pretty at night.
I have had this for over a year with no problems. I would replace it with the same model when this one wears out.

After 1 month I would agree with this review, however I have noticed the handle remains warm even when the kettle is empty & not switched on at the handle, but the base plate plug connected to a live socket. I am wondering whether this is normal or a fire risk? Please could other users comment!

This Breville JK15 Lightening has been a very good kettle and has been used pretty constantly, Monday to Friday, in our office of 20 staff. It's good because we no longer had the interruption of a kettle boiling every five minutes, and also, getting another cup of tea took only moments rather than minutes. I'm not sure how good it is for the elecricity bill to have the water on a constant heat, as opposed to re-boiling it every time you want a cup, but in terms of our office use, I should think that it was economically viable.
Because the connection is now faulty we are about to purchase a new kettle. I am seriously considering getting the same model.

Mivona's Response to Barzey's Review

I agree with this review because...I think that Breville's customer service lacks a great deal as well. My experience of their helpfulness mirrors Barzey's.
