For something a bit different, check out the new CD (Pavane) by Paul Higgs, one of the UK’s leading trumpet players. He has a beautiful smooth flowing tone, writes lovely melodies, and plays with excellent musicians. But the interesting thing about this instrumental all-acoustic recording is that Higgs moves with ease between the worlds of gentle jazz, neo-classical and new age music. I understand that there are not many new age trumpeters, but when they play this slow and gentle and emotionally, the music definitely fits into all of the above genres.
Higgs, who also plays piano on the CD, wrote all the material and most of it sounds instantly familiar as he pulls styles and elements from traditional classical pieces (such as the title track), Broadway and jazz standards. This is just plain “feel good” music that is just right for a party of one, two or twenty.
