Mike Longo is one of the old-guard jazzmen, but that does not mean he sits around rehashing old glories. Longo has always been known for pushing the envelope, especially in the eternal search for new excitement in the world of improvisation, or, as he sometimes calls it, spontaneous composition.
That is exactly what he does on his new concert recording, A Celebration of Diz and Miles. This is creative, innovative, mesmerizing music that takes the listener into new territory with twists, turns and skating-the-edge-excitement –- just like the best live jazz is supposed to do.
Here is a master at work, a jazz pianist willing to take chances just to see what might happen, a musician willing to lay it on the line. What more could a jazz fan ask?
