I have been with HSBC Group since 1966 and with FD since 1996. I have recently received a letter asking for additional information about myself, i.e. Proof of Identity and proof of address both to be certified by a independent professional person. Interestingly for a married woman they have made providing proof of address particularly difficult. For example, Council Tax bills, utility bills, water rates, telephone bill, Sky TV, are all in my husbands name and which pensioners receive a tax notification within the last 4 months from December (interestingly date not specified when opening an account as a new customer)?
I rang up FD and was told this was due to "new regulations" after pushing for more specific information this was change to "a change in our procedures". it is my belief that someone in FD has come up with a "clever" algorithm which identifies unprofitable accounts. I.e. No overdraft, no borrowing, always in credit. The veiled threat of the consequences of failing to provide this information in terms of closing the account suggests no other motive.
