I booked a room at the Christopher North House Hotel in February for a surprise visit to Edinburgh for my husband's birthday in August. When we arrived, we were shown to a very small attic room at the top of three flights of stairs, in which most of the space was taken up by a double bed. There was no draw space in which to unpack, and only one single wardrobe for the two of us. I also felt very claustrophobic in such a small space. I considered this unacceptable, particularly as I had booked so far in advance in the expectation of securing a decent sized room. The receptionist did acknowledge that they had taken a booking for a party of elderly people, so we were given this room, as they would not be able to manage the stairs. Without going into excessive detail, the hotel was not able to give us more acceptable accommodation for the whole of our stay, so we asked the receptionist to find us another hotel, which she did. However, the manager was unhelpful in her dealings with us. As well as offering no apology to us that we were unhappy with our room, and not acknowledging my disappointment that my surprise for my husband was spoiled ('All our guests are happy here'). She also demanded that we pay extra over and above the deposit and the balance for the one night that we stayed there. At this point, my husband got angry with her (and I too, was feeling the same way), and she then accused him of being aggressive. If her manner had been more conciliatory, we would have not been so unhappy, but she did nothing to calm the situation and left us feeling very aggrieved. The receptionist, much thanks to her, did tell us in a phone call that we would not after all be charged any extra.

We booked direct with Christopher North House Hotel by telephone after finding it on a search engine through a booking agent (book direct it was cheaper). The hotel within ten minutes walk from the main shopping,eating and drinking area of the Newtown district. This is an ideal location, the surrounding area is quiet and built up of Georgian 5 storey townhouses which are stunning. The decor of the hotel is lovely and in keeping with the style of building. Our room was lovely with an excellent view from the rear of the hotel, comfy bed and wonderful pillows. The shower was great with all the bathroom consumables provided. Edinburgh is a fantastic city.

I had a very bad experience with the Christopher North House Hotel in Edinburgh, even before I stayed there! I wanted to splash out at New Year and stay somewhere luxurious with my partner, and someone suggested this hotel.
I booked online for 2 nights, and received a confirmation email with a reference number.
Two days later I received a phone call from this hotel, from a woman who said she was the manager, haughtily telling me that my reservation was invalid and the minimum stay was 4 days.
To cut a very long story short, I received extremely bad customer service from everyone I spoke to at this hotel, even though I had done everything by the book.
Eventually I sent an email to the general manager, but instead of an apologetic reply, I received a very blunt reply from the receptionist.
Considering this hotel is supposed to be one of the best in Edinburgh, I received despicable service from the staff.
I would advise any future guests of this hotel to check that their internet site is up-to-date as it wasn't when I booked, hence all the hassle!
I'm now booked into a lovely hotel for New Year, who had very pleasant, extremely helpful staff, unlike the Christopher North.
I'm sad to say that I cannot recommend this hotel at all.
