I used to stay at some other hotels near here which claim to be 5 star - but frankly I found them overpriced and less customer orientated and friendly.
This hotel is basically a 3 to 4 star Motel which tries hard to do it's best, perhaps to overcome it's shortcomings, which I think results in a better service.
It can be very noisy. Some of the rooms are not particularly sound proof and the layout means some rooms are near lifts and stairs which are not in a separate lobby. I am writing this in a room in the hotel at nearly midnight. There is a wedding taking place (possibly several) and the corridors are full of really noisy children, running around and shouting. No one is attempting to control them and they really are very loud. I do not think I will be getting very much sleep tonight. I will be leaving at 05:30 to catch the ferry followed by a 6 hour drive home - if I don't nod off on the way. Earlier in the week wasn't so bad, but I do not recommend staying here Fri or Sat if you intend to get up early and need to sleep!

Really enjoyed my time at the la Mon hotel for a wedding. Would consider going back for a break in the near future. Had a gorgeous room, got upgraded to a suite for no reason. Staff lovely. Breakfast wasn't great, cold coffee and food. Phoned reception twice and got no reply???
