“Ignore the possibility of a replacement appliance finally”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 28/04/2015

Insured a Dyson vac since we do seem to break bits regularly (hoses and bits of plastic mouldings especially!). To be fair, we probably broke around financially even for the first few years as the premiums were modest, and once we had a repair code from D & G, Dyson were brilliant at sending bits and engineers direct.
However, Dyson have now stopped making parts and repairing our old vac model, so when it recently stopped working altogether we contacted D & G who informed us they would have it collected by an alternative appliance servicing company for repair. It was duly collected and apparently needed a new motor, and once mended quite quickly, it was returned. I immediately noticed the cable had been replaced with a grubby one, together with a new plastic bit on the handle, which had a crack in it. It was quite evident that the vac had been repaired with secondhand parts - as to the 'new' motor fitted..who knows, but I believe a fair assumption is that it also has come from a scrap donor.
I rang D & G customer services to express my dissatisfaction with this approach, since my premiums have continued to rise and don't now reflect the cheaper parts being fitted, nor does the policy mention such practice. I suggested that the process could go on for years - repairing my vac with old scrapped bits and all that would happen is that it would become less and less reliable and, I suggested they were doing all in their powers to avoid providing a replacement appliance as suggested by the policy. I got a quite a curt response to the effect that the vac was now working, and that they had fulfilled their contract.
Since I can now by a FULL secondhand appliance for the hiked up premiums and thereby get to the same point as provided by D & G, I have cancelled my policy forthwith.
Moral? D & G were fine when the appliance was newish and premiums were low, but don't hold out for a replacement appliance, it'll never happen!
