“Read the small print”

Having cancelled insurance on sale of the vehicle I noticed a small sum still coming out of our account. This they told me when I called DD was for the personal accident cover that was taken out with the vehicle insurance,and I would need to contact Avon Insurance as it was with them. I called them. The call is answered by machine saying Dierct Dial insurance,the human says Avon insurance Neither were keen on stopping this insurance,they tried to refer me back to DD. “Rubbish ”

DD are alright in the first year but they automatically renew at a much higher cost the following year. Automatically renewing is fine if they would have sent a letter saying how much it was going to be, giving you the chance to leave if you wanted. But they renew early before the date is due. Then they charge you if you want to leave and harrass you until you pay up. I will NEVER insure anything through this company again… Read Full Review

As others have mentioned in the reviews this lot take payments earlier than stated - charge ridiculous fees, high premiums and employ liars in customer service. Avoid like the plague!… Read Full Review

I contacted customer service at the time - they apologised and then did it again! We have now moved insurers and cut our premium cost in half. When I rang to cancel our policy customer service asked me why we were moving so I mentioned our bad experience again and the cost saving of over £200 - they said they could offer me a discount not to move insurers which just added insult to injury!!!

Thanks I'd be happy to do that but short of giving me some sort of refund for the several years we paid a premium well over the odds we have moved on and bought cover elsewhere.

Sorry not sure what point you're making - if you mean 'why not deal with this on a 1 2 1 basis' I agree but DD put comments in public online and therefore naturally I'll respond to them in public online. If you're correct that DD don’t wish 'all to see what they're prepared to do' then that's a bit cynical of them - I run several business and I'm very happy for the public to know how we deal with our customers as we're honest, open and proud to offer customer satisfaction. To be clear I don’t expect a refund from DD - as stated we have moved on so we should finish this conversation.

I had been with my previous insurers (Esure)for household contents for a number of years and had been previously pleased with the quotes given. When I received a random email from ComparetheMarket.com I decided to see what comparisons were available. Dial Direct came up with exactly the same cover, perks and extras for 21% less premium and placed my insurance with Legal & General. I could not believe it. “Auto-renew policy without telling you, then charge to...”

As with all my insurance policies, I never auto-renew as I would rather take the extra few minutes each year to find a new policy that doesn't mysteriously cost 2-3 times as much as the amount I paid 12 months previously... I am used to receiving my policy renewal 'offer' email from each insurer for all of my insurance policies each year, and take this as a prompt to search out a better deal. I called the 'customer service' team and was completely fobbed off. I don't just 'feel' it wasn't made clear. It wasn't made clear. The fact that you would take money without notification wasn't even mentioned in the email.

I would assume you would have been reasonably happy if the charge of £35 had not been applied or refunded when the error was found.
These auto renewals are quite common and are not always apparent when taking out a policy.
Did 'Vicky' refund the £35? If not I suggest you see a 'No Win No Fee' solicitor. This charge can not be legal for a genuine mistake.
The warning here is read all the terms and conditions or block the payment prior to payment.
I myself will be watching for this cunning move come renewal.

Yes, absolutely. the fact that this was a relatively, if not totally, hidden charge with no concession from them that they hadn't made it as clear as possible, suggests to me that in fact this is just another perfectly acceptable revenue stream for them and screw the customer. As it happens, our credit card company has refunded us and lodged a complaint; they say they are seeing a steady trend towards this sort of behaviour from 'budget' insurers where you are not given a clear opt in/out choice of automatic renewal at the point of sale and it is not made particularly clear that you will be automatically renewed. I suppose there is a large enough percentage of customers who don't check and end up paying over the odds renewal premiums that the insurers can afford to lose a few disgruntled ex customers...

On another note, I have now renewed with another insurer for the next year and their renewal process is entirely clear; you can sign up now for automatic renewal or, we will not automatically renew but will contact you in a year to ask if you would like to.
