“Sony DAV - S500: glorious past”

★★★★★

written by huy472003 on 22/12/2011

Sorry .... I do not know English but ... I've been using since 2002. Currently, the S500 still works fine. The sound effects are wonderful connection with Bluray Player, Sony PS3 via optical. 5 stars for a simple device (I bought a Denon 1312XP, but bad sound effects than S500)

“I just seen how long............”

written by louarias on 18/11/2011

Ive just seen the light or really had the light. I have just counted the number of years my Sony Dav S550 has been with me. A valued member of my movie and gaming society for a little less than a decade and still working and offering high quality 5.1 sound. Will Sony ever find the light again!

“Sony was known for it's reliability, and I was...”

★★★☆☆

written by dick dastardly on 12/05/2006

Sony was known for it's reliability, and I was prepared to pay a little extra for the piece of mind of purchasing a product with a long term lifespan.
I went out and bought a Sony TV, surround sound system and a VCR. Within 12 months my VCR processor failed (repaired under warranty). 12 months later my DVD controller board failed on the Sony DAV-S500 system, which costs a minimum of £120 to fix, plus labour costs and VAT.

I expected more from Sony products as they were regarded as the most reliable brand. However, I now find myself questioning why Sony products remain more expensive than equivalent spec products when their reliability is so poor.
Don't just take my word for it. Take a visit to eBay and see for yourself how many faulty Sony units are offered for sale.
My experience is not uncommon.

I have (had) the Sony DAV-s500 and it was great! With no problems. Lots of connectivity. One day after about 5 YRS, not alot of use it died, no power lights or anything. So now I have a Panasonic TV and a Panasonic Cinema surround sound. I hope it outlast the Sony. I think it the Sony should have lasted longer as I paid nearly £500 pounds back then.
Running cost i.e., 5YRS = £100 a year that's expensive.

Just wanted to say that I got the left speaker problem with my Sony DAV-S500. I took the circuit board in order to resolder but couldn't see any problems., I checked the connections from the board to the socket with a multi meter. All seemed fine so I reassembled. But now it works!

Seems like there is some dodgy connection. This may get worse when it heats up. Anyway, it might be worth a try.

I love the Sony DAV-S550 DVD home cinema system. I have had it for 3 years, and now I am only upgrading the DVD player and keeping the Sony home cinema as the sound part via a optical cable. With my new plasma, now is the time for HIGH DEF. Nothing has ever come close to this for the price.

Well done Sony!

★★☆☆☆

written by nickdavy on 24/10/2003

Bought the Sony DAV-S500 on the back of reviews in magazines. Initially very pleased, it was simple to set up and displayed good picture quality with reasonable sound. However Sony build quality is not all that it once was or what the name instills. The tuner keeps forgetting the pre-set stations and one of the speakers (Front Left) works intermittantly.
My last Dolby B system was still performing faultlessly when I upgraded to the Sony

I bought my Sony DAV-S500 just over a year ago (and did not go for an extended warranty) and have been experiencing exactly the same problems with my front left speaker. I have a feeling it's not going to be cheap to rectify the problem, any ideas?

This may be a few years late, but I just picked one up from a friend for $50 bucks.
<br/>I'll admit it's better than TV speakers, but the DVD player doesn't work and my problem is with the front RIGHT speaker.
<br/>
<br/>I'll look into cracking it open and soldering/cleaning it.

I've resoldered the speaker connections of my DAV-S500 a year ago, but still the left speaker drops out often. Also, i don't think the root of the problem is the left speaker connector, because there is still some noise coming out of the speaker and on certain "sound fields" (DSP Sound Effects) there is music (silently) on the left box. So I think the problem must be earlier in the chain of sound-processing on the main-board ?! Any clues?? Greets Stefan from Austria.

Well that's it, the Sony has been replaced with a Panasonic and not before time. The front left speaker problem eventually drove me mad, Sony did themselves no favours when they made the DAV, it certainly changed my opinion of their brand.

Do you find that its just the front left speaker connection, or the left headphone channel as well? I've just got a DAV-S500, admittedly I hadn't read all the posts on this site as I probably wouldn't have bothered and just carried on saving for the Logitech Z-5500 system that I really wanted, But anyway, I get the left speaker and headphone channel dropping out, so I'm just wondering if its the speaker connections that need soldering, or if its something more serious

I had the problem return as well but only happens after unit is on for about 2 hours (annoyingly at the end of most movies!!!). since I got it almost 4 years ago I'm just going to get some new kit, and move it into spare room as a luxury (or not!) really can't be bothered with getting a dated, badly manufatured kit working properly again! I will not be getting a sony again for this sort of equipment, no matter how good it looks the build quality is pathetic!!!

When I contacted Sony Canada they said that they did not have any information about others experiencing this problem. They said that if I took it into a Sony approved service centre to have it fixed and then faxed them the receipt along with the original purchase receipt that they may be able to give me a partial refund (since it was no longer under warranty).
<br>
<br>I decided against this and had a friend, who knows more about electronics, solder it for me according to what I learned from these comments.
<br>
<br>I don't know if I was just lucky or not but it has been working fine since. I'm not sure if it will help or not but I left the screws at the back a little loose to allow for the metal to expand when it heats up so this doesn't happen again.

Well I hate to throw cold water on it but... I carried out the soldering trick with great success during the middle of last year. It worked fine for a few months and then failed again. I tried the same soldering operation again but this time it did not work. I then tried soldering wires from the circuit board to the back of the rear connections (to bypass the problem area on the PCB) but this also did not work. When the unit is turned on the front LH speaker is OK for the first 5 minutes and then becomes intermittent again once it warms up. I think the problem has just been moved somewhere else and I cannot find the cause at the moment. Urghh

I am having the exact same problem with the front left speaker. What I have been doing, everytime I notice that no sound is coming out of it , is reaching to the back of the unit and jiggling the connection for the front left speaker. This seems to work for a little while at least. After reading the other comments I will try to take it apart and fix it.

Yes, had the same problem as everyone else, left hand speaker first intermittently cutting out and then pretty much permanently. I fixed the problem by resoldering the connections as suggested. Great sound!
<br>There is a downside though. I really struggled to get the cover off the unit. It took me half an hour and a couple of cuts on my hands. I had turned the unit over and over in many, many ways just to get the damn cover off. I always thought that you can do that with consumer electronics, provided that you have disconnected it (which I had). Turns out that some of the cogs in the player assembly are kept on their little axles by gravity alone. So they dropped off and rattled around. By the time I figured out what was going on the optical bits had been damaged.
<br>I now have a unit with sound through all its speakers, but no way to play DVDs or CDs. It'll cost me NZ$350 to have it fixed. I won't. I am utterly disappointed with Sony's design effort, to say the least. I'll buy something else and it won't be a Sony.

You need a star screwdriver to open the case but the soldering is straightforward.
<br>
<br>It looks like a simple design flaw. The connector unit is soldered to the circuit board and also bolted to the back of the unit. The repeated expansion/contraction of the case in that area, which gets very hot, simply wiggles the connections until they start to come away. Remarkably consistent, in that it takes almost exactly a year to break one of the joints.
<br>
<br>I just re-melted the solder at each joint of the connector unit to the board and it fixed the problem.

If you feel confident with a soldering iron and take care when taking the unit apart, it's not difficult. If you dont feel confident then it may be better to pay someone to do it, personally I would (and did) do it myself.

All I had to do to fix this annoying left-speaker fault was to take out the relevant circuit board, and I noticed there was some surface brown build-up on the back of the board (where the solder connections are). I simply cleaned off this brown surface layer (the worst was on the front left speaker connections surprise, surprise) and everything now sounds perfect. Just be careful when taking everything apart!

Very interesting to hear all these comments on the left-speaker issue, as I thought it was only my problem cables. Before I make things worse by taking the unit apart, how easy is it to take the circuit board out and re-solder? Otherwise I will bite the bullet and take it to a repair shop.

If it was a car with "first generation problems" there would be a recal and it would be fixed for free, not £50. I agree that the system can get hot especially if not turned off after use. Sony have obviously got (or had) a design problem, I for one have lost confidence in their premium branding.

I had exactly the same prob with my S500!!!! I took it to a Sony service centre and was told it was caused by over heating. The heat had dried out the heat sink(?)(the bit which helps the heat dissipate) and the solder. Something like that anyway.
<br>
<br>My point is, be careful that your systems are not over heating. Mine used to get so hot, I could hardly touch it. Make sure it has plenty space above it.
<br>
<br>The Sony tech. also said they often have probs. with first gen systems. He said the next gen. (s550?) is much more reliable.
<br>
<br>All a bit dodgy if you ask me!
<br>
<br>The repair cost about £50!

<br>Did everyone who had the "left speaker problem" find that it was fixed by resoldering? My DAV-S800 (same base unit as the S500 I think) has just started playing up with this exact problem, and I'm a tad nervous about taking it to bits. However if it's definitely the answer then I would rather give it a go than pay someone else to do it.

I'm not sure if the gentleman from Glasgow understands that no brand is perfect and to blindly push a brands name serves no positive purpose to anyone. Anybody in 'the know' these days understands that Sony are no longer what they used to be in the build quality department.

I have fixed it myself, at least it seems to work now.
<br>
<br>1. Take the cover off and extract the circuit board that the speakers connect into, trace where the speaker connections are soldered into the board.
<br>
<br>2. Re-solder those joints for the defective speaker.
<br>
<br>I did this over a week ago and so far so good, I assumed it was a bad solder joint, I might be wrong and simply taking the board out and replacing it might have fixed it (or not). I have my fingers crossed that the fault will not return.

written by bradley on 16/10/2003

I've had the Sony DAVS550 for about 6 months now, and am really pleased with it. It seems to handle everything that I can throw at it, although there are a few grumbles. Video to video2 - no surround sound. Sat to video1 - no 5.1 ( sky's fault not the 550). And now I've just tried it as a SACD. Popped in the Pink Floyd Dark Side 5.1 disc. Fantastic. Well worth the price alone. The only real annoyance that although I have the multi-region model,it doesn't handle NTSC to PAL. ( Although the Australian model does ). I bought a Queensryche DVD in the UK and the 550 will only play it in NTSC, although my cheaper Logix plays it no problem. I think I've covered all bases to get this problem fixed ( apart from buying a new TV ) but maybe someone out there knows better.

written by Jimbolean on 18/09/2003

This is my first experience of a surround sound system, and I must say that I am reasonably impressed with it. I paid £300 from Richer Sounds for my Multi-Region Sony DAVS550. The volume needs to be cranked on some DVDs but others are fine, especially those with a DTS track (Terminator 2 Ultimate DVD DTS track is cracking).
The only real problem thatI have found is that I can hear some dialogue through the sub. This was especially noticable with Mel Gibson's voice on the DTS track on 'Signs'and this did spoil the enjoyment slightly as this detatches the voices from the screen somewhat. Has anyone else noticed this and can it be remedied?

written by Chris. on 15/05/2003

After reading 'What hi-fi' raving about the DAV-S550 being a star buy for £600. I decided that for £350 (multi-region) from 'Richer Sounds', it was too good an offer to let pass. And i have to agree with 'What Hi-fi'. The sound is impressive and weighty with action films, but still crystal clear enough for dialogue. I know that it could never compete with full-on separate A/V components and speaker packages, but in my room which is approx 4m x 4m i would never have the space for such equipment. So the diddy satelite speakers and sub are just the ticket. DPL 2 is also a great feature for watching standard TV programmes. It's worthwhile getting an S-video - Scart lead (or component cable if you're lucky enough to have a plasma screen) As this is noticeably better than the composite adaptor supplied. To sum up. Buy with confidence (not forgetting mounting brackets!). As long as you're lounge isn't of gargantuan proportions, you won't be dissapointed.

I'm thinking of buying a DAV-s550 and I'm wondering about the best way to connect it to the tv. Is it better to go from s-video to s-video or s-video to scart?

I think that the scart to 3 phono connectors is meant to be connected to the composite (yellow) monitor out, and the red and whites are for audio. I don't think that this lead is compatible with the component outputs on the back of the unit (The red, green and blue phonos) If you want the best picture, but your TV does not accept component inputs, then I think S-video to scart is the best connection. (Russ Andrews sell a tasty one, if you don't mind paying extra for top performance).

Might not be a huge help but I've got my 550 connected to a 30" LCD panel using the component video connections and it seems to work fine.
<br>I've got the switch on the back set to progressive which seems to work fine (it switches back to interlaced automatically for PAL DVD's which is quite annoying).
<br>Have you got a cable that connects the component out signals to a scart plug? If so does your TV actually accept component video through a scart? Also some televisions have different connections on each of their scart sockets so you might have to try a different socket on the TV.

I have had the dav s550 for a few months now and have been using the yellow composite wire included with the system. As you know the picture is not as crisp as it would be with the RGB connection.
<br>So I have been trying to connect the system to my 32" Sony TV via the composite video out jack plugs (RGB) using an rgb (3 jack plugs) - Scart wire. But the TV receives no picture. I have tried flicking the switch on the back to progressive and this makes no difference. I don’t think the box is actually sending a RGB signal out of the component video out (RGB) because according to the manual it will not send a signal out of monitor out (S-Video & yellow composite) when progressive is selected and it is.
<br>Can anybody help?
<br>Thanks in advance.

Have you ever seen the difference between composite and RGB/S-Video for a games console? The non-composite picture is orders of magnitude sharper and more vibrant.

Rich here. Bought the Sony dav s 550 recently, from www.comet.co.uk , which is offering good dealsat the moment. Very happy with the package so far. Never had DVD before, but the package of good quality, the package looks extremely stylish in my living room and I am a happy customer. The system feels like it should go louder, but it doesn't and there it is.
<br>
<br>It feels like the DVD reads discs slowly, although I don't know if it is typical of DVD systems.
<br>
<br>I am using the yellow composite out at the moment. I bought a Scart adaptor from Dixons to connect it up to the 100Hz 28" Pure Flat JVC TV. I know that's a pretty good TV. The picture quality is excellent. I can't imagine that an S-Video to Scart connector would give a better picture to justify the further cost. What do you think?

Help! I've just bought the Sony DAV S550 and connected it up to my existing Toshiba 2877DB TV and Amstrad Digibox. I have connected it in accordance with the instructions i.e. digibox into Video 2 input and output to the TV via the yellow 'monitor out' into the TV S-Video socket. The DVD player works with surround sound from the S550 when the TV is selected to Ext 3 but there is no sound from the S550 when selected to the normal TV channel for satellite. The TV has 3 scart inputs and one S-Video input, and also a 'fixed' input for stereo audio to utilize the TV surround sound. The digibox input is there and the TV has sound, but I can't seem to get it through the S550.

I wouldn't bother using it as a Hi-fi. It can play CD's sure, but i'd concentrate your efforts in getting a decent stereo system for the same sort of price (ie. Denon DM-31). It's slow at loading discs and although it is easy to use, it sounds rather 'weedy' with CD, even at high volumes. Also bear in mind that you've got 6 speakers and all the associated wiring to hide, rather than just 2 for a stereo. However, they are going very cheap at the moment, so it may be worth buying one before they're discontinued. You could use it as a stereo until you've got another 'cache of cash' to buy a decent stereo system.

I can only respond from my own experiences, but hope this is of some use Paul. My TV is a Sony, other manufacturers may have different specifications. I also got a black and white image when i first connected my '550' via S video - Scart. I had to move my VCR from scart input 2 to scart input 1 on my TV (my old DVD used to be connected via regular scart, to Scart input 1 on my TV), as only the 2nd and 3rd scart inputs have a regular mode for regular scart connections, and also an 'S' mode for...You guessed it S video signals. Scart input 1 didn't have this second 'S' mode. If you've followed this, then it may be worth pressing the input button on your remote and seeing if any of the inputs have this 'S' mark on them. If so connect your '550' to this input. Hope this is of some help, and not too tricky to follow!

Oh Ash. How much do you listen to music? 'Cos if you're serious about music, i'd go for the Denon. Just 'cos the '550' plays music, doesn't mean it does it well. But on the other hand, it may be worth getting a '550' while they're going cheap, and saving for the denon later. Sods law says the minute you decide to go for the '550' down the line, it will have been discontinued, and it's replacement will cost a bomb!

I don't think it matters too much. I used an S-video - Scart lead, but it was purely for cosmetic reasons as my TV only has an S-video input on a pop-out panel on the side. And i didn't want to see any cables, so it had to go into a Scart input on the back of the set. Either way it's lots better than using the yellow, composite - scart adaptor supplied.

Wanting a all in one systen that wouldn't take up a lot of room and also something that would play allsorts of formats, the Sony DAVS550 was in the frount running from the start.
Having shopped around, we found that Richer sounds had the best deal, Once home the system was very simple to set up and we were watching a DVD with in half an hour of taken it out of the box, the picture quality is stunning the sound is ample for most living rooms, it looks very smart with neat speakers, the only thing is there are no scart outputs on the back of the Sony, only phono outputs so you will have to buy some sort of phono leads to listen to other equipment such as video and sky.
If you wish you can ask for a multi region system which will play all DVDs from aroud the world.
Its great sounding, Good looking, Well built, resonable value for money (well it is a Sony).

This is a amazing setup piece of kit. The Sony DAVS550 is a bargain at only £350.00 from Richer Sounds Multi-Region Sony shop still selling at 450 region 2. The sound of this kit is awesome full of kicking bass at low volume. The picture quality is good with standard leads.
Completely recommend this system as after listening to my friends Bose Lifestyle 12, this matches the sound but at a cheaper price.
You can save yourself some money too by buying the speaker wall brackets from Currys a deal at only 12.99 per pair in silver.

After reading all your comments...and the issues with the Bass! I recently had a move around in the front room. I moved the Bass module from the front left corner which had a backdoor/wall to the Right hand side hidden behind a cuboard and moved the sofa back so the rear speakers line up with your head. This has created a more enjoyable viewing and sound experience....causing the room to shake when watching war related movies.....absolutely awesome system. Resently hooked up PS2 with optical connection on back of 550 system and am now enjoying much better sound that way.

Whilst the DAVS 550 is a PUKKA looking unit with its brushed stylish design, it really lets itself down on the sub side! I purchased one of these along with a DAVS 400 for the bedroom from Richer Sounds. After comparing the two in the same room i returned the 550 and changed it for another 400. The 550 lacked in bass even when wound up to the maximum. Although the DAVS 400 is an old design it certainly out performs the 550 and doubles up as a fantastic CD player too! At only £230...ITS A BARGAIN !!

If it's only the bass that's disappointing you. Why not buy a separate active sub? As long as it accepts line level inputs (For those who don't know what i'm on about, Line level inputs are used to connect speaker wires from an amp to a sub) Then you will have an active sub with plenty of welly. S'gonna cost you though. I think the best 'sound for pound' ratio sub is an MJ acoustics pro. And last time i checked it's £300!

Ok OK - I admit that My subwoofer was positioned too close to the TV it seems, and I have moved this away now, towards the back of the room. Yes, I had the sub level turned up to +6 from day 1, and by moving the sub, and the centre speaker to the middle of the room (previously on top of telly) the sound has improved by 200% whilst watching DVD's. Still not quite the bass I would of liked, but not bad, at about 20 volume plus. I have been in contact with Sony about buying either a bigger subwoofer, or a bigger amp - but nothing will work straight forward. Seems I will have to live with it now...

Have you tried sticking it in a corner, or at least close to a wall? This should re-inforce the bass from the sub. Also, may seem a stupid question but did you know you can up the sub level on the amp menu? Is it music or movies that are lacking bass. Because as good as the '550' is for watching films, there is no way i would ever consider ditching my stereo for music reproduction.

“Having just received the DAVS550 and never having had...”

written by Wideboy. on 13/03/2003

Having just received the DAVS550 and never having had a full surrond sound system before, the sound quality and effects are awsome! No complaints about the product as yet.

Set everything up last night, and it's very easy with the user-friendly colour coded wiring.

Be warned that the unit has no scart output and you will need to buy a S/video to scart lead in order to conect to your TV. There is a normal video cable supplied, but when you've spent so much, you might as well get the proper cable and make the most of the quality.

Sound quality is excellent - I shall be using the system as my hi-fi as well as for home cinema, music playback is more than acceptable (but then I'm not really a Hi-Fi enthusiast so others may disagree?). It sounds far better than my old midi system anyway.

The remote DOES glow in the dark, but as with any glow in the dark product, needs to be exposed to light before hand.

The system looks great, sounds great, and so far I'm very impressed. Make sure you shop around on the internet though as prices are coming down all the time. I bought mine on-line for £369.95 on 8th March 2003.

I'm not the best person to review this product since I've never had any other system with which to compare it! However, if like me you're a first time home-cinema buyer, don't hesitate to buy the DAVS550!!

My value for money rating is based on the cheapest internet price, not the RRP!

I'm pretty happy with the Sony DAVS550 home cinema system. I found that the five 80W speakers does a pretty good job at giving out the bass, where as some other home entertainment system doesn't (Many only with 30W to 40W). I tested the clarity and the blast, both were exceptionally good. You can still hear people talking clearly behind explosion, where as many other system I tested couldn't. You don't get those squashed sound from some other systems. Overall, I'm quite happy with this system.

One thing I don't like about this system is there is no time setting for this system. I want to be able to wake up to the Music that I want to heard in the morning.

Upgraded..well I thought I was upgrading from my old Sony dav s300 which I loved, entry level, I agree but hey !..and I have to say, after testing it with what I believe to be the test of tests .. the opening battle scene in Saving Private Ryan, I was gutted by the lack of something which I can't put my finger on, plenty bass, just seems to lack the sound quality of the 300. Also It is almost double the power of the 300 50w pc as opposed to 30wpc with the 300 but you wouldn't know it .. you have to put the volume much higher with the 550. It takes an eternity to load discs, and some come with the subtitles showing which is hacking me off, and the glow in the dark remote .. guess what .. your right .. It doesn't glow. So all in I feel like I've wasted my money. Contacting my dealer this week to see about upgrading to the 880.

I have also upgraded to a S550 from a S300. I'll have to disagree though as I would say that the sound on the 550 is much better than on on the 300.
<br>
<br>The main reason I upgraded was because I felt the 300 lacked clarity through the centre speaker which made it difficult to hear dialogue when characters were speaking quietly. No such problem with the 550 the dialogue is much clearer and all of the surround sound affects (both 5.1 & DTS) effects are much better.
<br>
<br>All I can say is, if you can afford it (Richer Sounds are doing the 550 for £299 Region 2 / £349-multi region), then upgrade now!

Sony seem to have looked to the future in their latest models of home cinema. The 550 includes the latest Dolby support prologic II. Unless your a game fan you might not of heard about the new format. Dolby Pro Logic II allows for a standard stereo input to be plugged in to give full 5.1 Surround sound! Obviously there is one small catch that the bass level is very low! But it shows how the Dolby Labs are thinking of new ideas. So far only the New Nintendo GameCube is the only piece of equipment to take onboard this new piece of technology. The 550 builds on the older model (500) with a more stylish setup and the additional support of CD-R, CD-RW, VCD's and SVCD! So at least Sony are hearing what we all want! Rumours are out that you can enter a password on the remote to unlock the region coding.

I can see where your coming from when you say the base is very low, Although you can increase and decrease the base amp by +6 and -6 you still have to understand this system is solely designed for a small to medium room, and by god does it pack some punch in my small sitting room, about 12 x 9 foot, Excellent piece of kit and cd,s sound Great too.10/10

Dd Davo's Response to Horace.'s Review

Written on: 31/08/2003

Hi, I fancied a Home cinema system, saw the DAVs 550 and thought, THATS FOR ME. I liked the styling very much (although you shouldn't choose a product, just becuase it looks nice) and visited the sony website which didn't tell me much. I thought someone could advise me who already has the DAVs 550 on how good the product is.
<br><br>
<br><br>I have read all the comments about it on this page and there seems to be a problem with lacking bass. I'd like to use this to plug in my PC, TV and Electronic Yamaha Keyboard. The facacillity to play DVD's would be useful but i was looking at using more as a really good surround system.
<br><br>
<br><br>Do you feel that this unit doesn't provide enough bass? Are there units avaiable (no more expensive though) that give a good shot of bass?
<br><br>
<br><br>This system is 500watts? Inc 100watts of bass?
<br><br>
<br><br>so whats your views?
<br><br>Please reply
<br><br>Many Thanks

Get a video/aux lead and put in your headphone socket on your tv. Put the other end into the spare audio holes in the back of the system and set the function to 'video 2' function. Simple.

I just purchased a Sony DAV-S500 home cinema kit. I think it's great. Sony have really got a winner. It's very compact and has built in tuner. The picture is very clear and the sound's fantastic. Great value for money at £399 on the net. It does not have a scart, but comes with the cable you need which is s video to scart
