Stockholm is a beautiful, yet expensive city, but then the whole of Scandinavia is not exactly cheap. I stayed there about two years ago in the winter, it was very cold and the whole city was covered with snow. It just looked beautiful!
While staying there in a very nice hostel (City Backpackers very close to the main station) I was able to explore the city by feet and didn't have to use the underground line once. The beautiful islands on which the city spreads are easy accessible by a lot of bridges and definitely worth visiting.
I especially recommend to check out Gamla Stan (the old city of Stockholm) and the Vasa Museum (even if you're normally not into museums this is worth visiting). If you have some time, make sure to check out the archipelago in front of Stockholm, it is simply beautiful, as well in summer as in winter.
Its a city to visit in every season, and I will make sure to visit it sometime in the summer again.
