Don't waste your money on this terrible hedge cutter. I went out and bought a proper one within a month.

My rating appears at odds with all others. Perhaps because it is an older machine. I have had it for 16 years and it has been fault free and has run well, cutting beech and leylandii hedges. Last year it developed a starting fault which I traced to a split in the carb. diaphragm. I repaired this and it is now running again.
Because of its age I have been looking for a replacement and one useful point is overlooked in technical information; Namely the fuel/oil ratio. An oil rich mixture is choking when cutting close to a tall hedge in windless conditions.

Absolute junk, and worse, dangerous junk!
Starting problems from new.
Unsecured push fit petrol pipes come off spraying petrol onto hot engine. I had to wire-lock these in place.
Primer bulb leaks air into the fuel pipes, stalling engine.
Bolts securing the main cover and fuel tank vibrated loose repeatedly, resulting in the petrol tank dangling from the (now wired in place) pipes! I eventually applied threadlock to the bolts, but the vibration then sheared them.
Only good point is the very good cutter blade.
My advice: Either pay more for a 4 stroke machine, or buy a cordless machine and spare batteries. A hedgetrimmer used only a couple of hours a year should last 20 years. The Tivoli didn't last 2!

McCulloch Tivoli 63 Petrol Hedge Cutter
I have had it for 14 months - it has always been difficult to start. The pamphlet is not a great help.
Took it back to Machine Mart who replaced the cord winder. It was still difficult to start.
I stopped it half way though cutting the hedge, when I went to restart, it would not. I lost faith in Machine Mart amnd I have taken it to an independent who has stripped it and rebuilt it. There are no apparent problems but he cannot start it.
It is out of warranty. I have wasted my money.
My advice. Do not buy one of these and think seriously before purchasing any other McCulloch equipment.

The McCulloch Tivoli 63 Petrol Hedge Cutter has a powerful cut, it managed my large laurel hedge in an afternoon, but I feel it is a poor starter. Mine took a long time to start first time but when I tried it again this spring, it would not go. It is back with the shop now who refunded me my money without any problems. I do not think mine was a reliable piece of kit and in my opinion it was not worth the money

I live in France and bought the McCulloch Tivoli hedge cutter in the UK. When I returned home I had great difficulty starting it. Eventually I got it going but it ran just for 5 minutes and was then impossible to restart. I sought help from Husqvarna UK who took 24 days to answer my email messages and then said it was not their problem under the guarantee. I put the machine with a repairer who contacted Husqvarna France; they argued for three weeks that my guarantee was not valid in France. Eventually I wrote to Husqvarna Italy where the machine is made; they instructed Husqvarna France to repair it under guarantee. Then followed a "pantomime" where a repairer replaced the broken ignition rotor after which the same part broke immediately. The machine was then replaced and upon arrival I tried to start it and had the same problems. The ignition rotor was again broken. I demanded and obtained a refund. You buy this machine at your peril, I believe it has a serious fault. The machine was a nightmare and dealing with this company was also dreadful.

Obviously I am not happy with the short life of this McCulloch Tivoli 63 Petrol Hedge Cutter, at 15 months old it started to get very hot and stopped and i have been told that it will not be cost effective to have it repaired.

The McCulloch Tivoli 63 Petrol Hedge Cutter has been a waste of time and money, I bought from Cheapmowers Ltd who I feel were not helpful at all when I contacted them and explained my difficulty, i,e. one useless hedge trimmer. I have wasted £164.95. Buyers beware!

Personally, I bought the McCulloch Tivoli 63 Petrol Hedge Cutter primarily for about 40m of hedge and general bush trimming a good distance from any electric supply. Prior experience with electric trimmers suggested a more powerful machine was required.
The swivel handle is a necessity for good control.
The engagement arm for starting broke after about 30 hours of use - I'm now testing the after sales guarantee service!

I bought a McCulloch Tivoli 63 Petrol Hedge Cutter 14 years ago, and it's worked very well for me. You have to get the hang of using some choke initially, and then running without choke, but that's normal for any small petrol engine like device like this; I've never failed to get it to start. The machine has cut through hedges, twigs, small branches, weeds and everything I've used it for. The reach is of course limited if you've got very tall hedges, and because of the weight of the machine, I wouldn't want to be up a ladder with it. You get plenty of cutting out of a tiny amount of fuel. Overall, a tremendous garden workhorse.

It's not a bad hedge trimmer in terms of performance if a little too heavy to use for more than 40 mins. I noticed a little dribble of fuel which has now turned into a flood. This is caused by the fuel tank being in contact with the metal casting and having melted. Another problem with holing the tank is it makes a warm restart impossible as the fuel drops back into the tank before the engine can really get going. So not a bad machine if used in very short bursts but watch for fuel leaks, its the start to trouble.

We have petrol stimmers, chain saws, etc so we are not new to this type of equipment - I think it has to be the worst ever.

This review if based on my use of the McCulloch Tivoli 63 Petrol Hedge Cutter. Maybe I just had a faulty one by the other reviews.

The instructions for the McCulloch Tivoli 63 Petrol hedge cutter weren't especially clear, especially with regards to starting, and the role of the clutch. Also, there are far more safety points to plough through than actual instructions. Once that was sorted out and I got the thing running, following some twiddling of a cable adjuster not even mentioned in the instruction booklet, I was pleasantly surprised how well it coped with thick twigs/branches. Having used an electric trimmer for many years, I thought I could use this thing to fell a forest!
Using a petrol trimmer is different to an electric one with regards to weight and fumes. Weight will limit you to short bursts of activity, but you can cut a serious amount of hedge in 15 to 20 minutes. Also, the weight means you will tire very quickly if reaching up to cut a tall hedge.
This is a fuel/oil 2 stroke engine (to limit weight), so some fumes are produced.
The machine looks like it is built to last. Vibration is not an issue.

I cannot rate the machines performance because despite spending considerable time trying to figure out how to start the bloody thing from the ludicrous and tortuous instructions, I failed to even get it started. Back to the shop time. Argos has an excellent returns policy but I think I should buy a season ticket to their customer services counter!

McCulloch Hedge Cutter ideal for use in short bursts, however it cuts through virtually any thing with ease so in no time you can cover a large area. The only problem is if you need to use ladders on tall hedges it gets quite tiring.
I've only run it for a few hours, but it still appears to be very sharp.

A pity I did not find this website until after I had bought my McCulloch Tivoli 63. As this reviewer has remarked - a waste of money. I have had starting problems since the day I bought it for my home in France.

A local rural independent farming machinery dealer/service centre in France who I took it to (I have used him quite a lot over the years)refused to even look at it - a waste of time - he maintained that most of the McCulloch kit he had previously dealt with was "camelotte", which is French for trash. Just not worth the effort and damage to his reputation - in addition to the aggravation and cost to his customers for a very short-term fix.

Do not buy!!
