Purchased a Groupon voucher for '67% off teeth whitening' thinking I had got an excellent bargain. Turns out that I hadn't - what I received was pretty close to a scam.
67% off - A Bargain
At 67% off, you would think I had found a bargain. Normally priced at £299, I was getting my teeth whitening for just £89 - all because of a group buy. Well it wasn't until I was in my local hairdressers that I realised this wasn't true. There sitting in the window was a voucher saying teeth whitening for £89, was £299. Was it a Groupon special offer? Nope. I was paying exactly the same price as if I had walked in off the street.
Location, Location
Not that there was anywhere to walk into of course. Naturawhite don't seem to have a premises from what I can see. Their offer says 'convenient Ferry Road location' but this is simply a salon (Yuu Beauty). Naturawhite it appears just seem to rent space from other salons to make themselves mobile (they claim they are all over the UK and Scotland).
Side Effects
I had probably rushed into the whole thing because I didn't want to miss out on the 'great deal' they had on Groupon. I did try phoning the salon to speak to the owner (Sean) about possible side effects, but after being put through to his mobile was promised a call back. That never happened. I should probably not have bought it at this point but I was convinced I was getting a good deal.
During my appointment I asked several times if there were any side effects or problems. Sean looked at the packet and read out a few of the ingredients looking confused and then said "probably not". He backed this up with "It's what all the celebrities use so probably not".
Unfortunately there were two major side effects. The first, not so important was that the treatment didn't last. I had really white teeth for a few weeks but then they returned to normal (not the 2 years as stated on the Naturawhite website). I phoned up to ask what had caused this and Sean said "If you're drunk tea or coffee or red wine that's probably what caused it". I wouldn't have got the treatment if I had known I wouldn't be able to drink tea, coffee or red wine to make the treatment cost effective.
The second side effect came in the form of itchy gums. Turns out having this peroxide-type gel close to your gums isn't the best idea. I did phone up and was told I would get a call back about the itching gums but that never happened. I don't normally have sensitive teeth so I was told this shouldn't affect me.
Dentist Approved?
Afterwards I went to my dentist as I was worried that I might have done them more harm than good. Turns out he gets a lot of people coming through who have problems after the treatment, not just from Naturawhite addmitedly. He didn't seem to recommend the procedure and told me not to do it again if I wanted to have teeth when I'm older.
In Summary:
I now have exactly the same colour teeth as before, perhaps with long-term dental problems, and I didn't even get it on special offer. I guess I should think more about my purchases in future.
