“Dare to explore, go ghana it's ghana be an adventure!”

★★★★☆

written by on 01/10/2016

This experience was not at all how I would have ever imagined it, as words could not describe it. This was so much more than a charity. It changed my life for the better and made me feel emotions that I thought I didn't even have. The adventures that you go on and the work that you do is so rewarding. I just wish I could stay longer and give more to the children of ghana who are very deprived of basic living conditions. I met alot of like minded motivated and fabulous volunteers from USA, Ireland, England, Wales and Canada. Building friendships with the team and volunteers was another reason the experience was so enjoyable. Library building and farming was what I did for three weeks. Heat, sweat and laughter is what I experienced doing these activities. Working in a team and seeing the faces of the children after completing the libraries was awesome. The downside was mosquitos as they loved me and kept biting me I just wish I had bought more creams for the after bites to stop scratching but apart from that everyone on my trip loved the experience and will treasure the memories that we had for 3 weeks.

“Most rewarding experience ”

Honestly such an eye opener, everything was amazing the fact that you work in locations all over the country is amazing. The excursion package is defiantly something you don't want to miss out on. Working plus seeing some amazing sites and enjoying some history. There is nothing that I didn't like, I like how close you get with every person on the trip, including no the staff. It's like your little family for the length of your stay which makes goodbyes that much harder. Before leaving I just wish I knew how much snack food I would be eating. There is a lot of snack food! But it is good cause that is binding time wth roommates

“Most rewarding trip ever!”

★★★★★

written by Chelly17 on 14/09/2016

I'm not sure where to start, I did a 3 week trip in June and I enjoyed every moment of it! Seeing how happy the people we built houses for were even though they have next to nothing it's amazing! People ask me if it was sad and it's the complete opposite, there wasn't a day where I wanted to go home or where I wasn't having a laugh I made some amazing friends on this trip! I will definitely go back to Ghana I would do the trip over and over again it was the best 3 weeks ever! Building a house for the orphans & buliding 3 libraries whilst there but also having the best time on our work days and the excursions the staff there are amazing and make you feel like family after a few days I settled in great and it was like I had known them forever! If your thinking of going don't think any longer GO! You won't regret it!

“I liked coming to Ghana and probably would visit again...”

written by on 13/08/2016

I liked coming to Ghana and probably would visit again but not with the organisation. There was times I felt like we werent actually helping as locals could have done a better job and we were sitting around a lot. the workers were nice but some things went missing in the house. There were lots of random people coming in and out of the house. The excursions were really good thoguh and I enjoyed the group of volunteers that were on my trip.

“TAKE ME BACK!”

★★★★★

written by JazminKeating on 24/09/2014

Spent 4 weeks in Ghana with Thrive Africa and can honestly say I had the time of my life. Everything was well organised, and spare time was filled with activities based on what the group wanted to do. All the excursions were brilliant too, and really allowed the group to experience different areas of the country. I stayed in one of the Kumasi houses, and although it was pretty basic, it was still much more than I expected. The food prepared and cooked on a daily basis by the Thrive staff was of a good quality too, another positive surprise on the trip. All the Thrive staff, both Ghanaian and English, were friendly, welcoming, helpful and reassuring - exactly what you need in a country that you haven't experienced before. Seriously encourage anyone who wants to do something similar to go out there and do it, and I think Thrive Africa offers the perfect opportunity. Would go back straight away if I could, made some seriously good friends and so many amazing memories, cannot thank the Thrive staff enough. As long as you go with an open mind and embrace the Ghanaian culture, I'm positive you'll love it just as much as I did.

“Amazing experience”

★★★★☆

written by Danalou92 on 07/08/2014

The experience gained by being in Ghana is truly priceless! You genuinely don't understand until being in the situation and I would honestly recommend to anyone thinking about it! That being said, the organisation of the trip is sometimes questionable. A lot of this is related to the lifestyle in Ghana. If they tell you something is happening at 7am, that usually means 8am. This can be really difficult to get your head around as we come from a society matched with deadlines and you sometimes feel that your not doing enough to help. Just stick with it because it will pay off! Also if you are female, you can become offended by the way you are spoken to. There is a clear cultural difference which I found the most difficult to get my head around. In relation to the thrive houses, I stayed in the house in Kumasi and bolga. Both were very clean and staff made sure you were looked after. Don't expect too much though, the houses aren't the ritz and you often lose running water and electricity. Before going on the trip, if you want to keep in contact with people and use the internet, get your phone unlocked BEFORE travelling! It's such a pain to figure it out when your there! Internet bundles on the Ghanian sim are very cheap and worthwhile! You will have an amazing time! I would do it all over again!

“A brilliant trip in an incredible country.”

★★★★★

written by Stevens239 on 06/08/2014

My trip with Thrive Africa was on of the best of my life to date. Thrive Africa boasts a great scheduel, accommodation, staff, support, meals and excursions. For me it was enjoyable as it was so relaxed - although you work hard there there is a very laid back feel in the houses and on all the excursions, All the volunteers on my trip were super friendly and the staff make you feel very comfortable. The library building and time spent in the schools and children's home is amazing but extremely moving and heart wrenching at times. The excursions are laid back fun and all the locations are BEAUTIFUL and GHANA is just one of the most incredible places you will ever visit filled some of the best people, food, music, faith and places in the world. So if anyone hasn't got it yet, I would strongly recommend visiting Ghana with Thrive Africa. :)

An amazing experience with amazing new people. Getting to build libraries throughout the day and seeing how thankful the children and teachers are leaves you glowing. Spending time with your team on excursion and when building felt like you were one big family. And unforgettable experience leaving you with many emotions. You'd be a fool to miss out.

I can't really begin to explain how amazing my three weeks as a volunteer was! The library builds alone were such an amazing experience, seeing the children's faces light up when they seen what we had in store for them made my trip! Visiting the lake was so relaxing after our first week of hard work! The second weekend we visited mole national park, that was such an experience seeing all the animals up close! For the last weekend we went to cape coast for our last few nights, it was unreal, spending out days and nights on the beach! I know after this trip I have made amazing friends that I will keep in touch with! I also have to mention the leaders, they made the trip unforgettable aswell, they were always there to help and generally made the trip more enjoyable! I would seriously recommend anyone that gets the chance to volunteer with thrive to do it!

“Best month ever!”

★★★★★

written by Leahshortx on 28/07/2014

Had the most fantastic month of my life. The staff are brilliant and did all they could to ensure we felt safe and had the most fun possible. Such a positive experience and met friends that I will have for the rest of my life. Would love to go back next year! Loved the option to purchase the excursion pack, would definitely recommend that as it's a good way of seeing ghanas sights easily and cheap. Food was good, cooks were accommodating however bring luxuries such as crisps and chocolate as these are hard to come by. Ensure you take the correct things on kit list, I struggled without a few things. Also you can never have too many clothes that you are willing to ruin. Over all it was a fantastic trip that will never be forgotten.

“Best month ever!”

★★★★★

written by Patterson1954 on 21/07/2014

This review is extremely late and I have been meaning to do this for ages, however this time last year I was having the time of my life enjoying the last week of my month long trip. I don't know where to even start but if I say that not a day has gone by where I havnt thought about, or spoken about Ghana to family, friends or anyone who will listen - I think it says it all! The volunteering was undoubtedly the highlight of the trip, my personal favourite days were spent in schools meeting children and playing games between working on libraries. The staff, from the teamleaders to the drivers and the staff at both houses were amazing and couldn't do enough to ensure you had the best possible experience, including special birthday bonfires, playing games in the evenings and even coming on evenings out with us. Weekends away at both the national park and the lake were incredible and well organised so we made the most of our time there. A lot of fun was had at Cape Coast during the final few days, everyone had the chance to relax after a busy month with the option to sight see if you wanted. An unforgettable trip, rewarding and so enjoyable.

“An unforgetable 3 weeks!”

★★★★★

written by Ghana2014 on 17/07/2014

I have to say my trip to Ghana was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I have always wanted to go on a volunteering trip and after this trip I would love to go on another! It is so rewarding helping others and making a difference to their lives. The work that Thrive Africa do is extremely intimate with the communities and you feel welcomed and part of the family. During my time there my group helped to build a new home for a community that were taking in 5 new orphans; we helped to carry the water from the river, mixed the soil together with the water to make clay and then made mud bricks to construct the walls. To think right now that a family are living in a home that I helped to build is just amazing. One thing I must say is that it is hard work! Working 6 hours in the sweltering sun is not an easy task so be prepared. The staff that are involved in Thrive Africa are the kindest, welcoming and friendly people that you will ever meet. They made sure we knew what was going to happen each day, they cared for us if we had a problem, they fed us well (I thought the food was delicious! but you better like chicken and rice ;P) and made you feel as part of their Ghanaian family. I felt that Thrive Africa had a good balance between work and play. You worked in the morning and then you had the afternoon to relax. In the evenings we played games, had a quiz night, bonfires in the back yard and had African drummers and dancers come to perform. The excursions that are included are great! I was lucky enough to be in throwing distance of a wild African Elephant! I loved every single part of my Ghana adventure even down to the potholes in the roads (haha) because that's what life is all about, experiencing new things, different ways of life and cultures. Overall, I would highly recommend Thrive Africa to others. You will have a fantastic time making new friends for life and experience a world that makes you appreciate just how lucky you are! 10/10!

I had the most amazing three weeks ever! Couldn't be more glad that I decided to do it so would definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about going. The work you do is so rewarding and the children and locals are all so lovely. The staff are also amazing and make sure you are well looked after, I never felt unsafe at any moment! The excursions are so much fun, and the whole trip is a good balance of hard work and amazing experiences. I will never forget my time there, and it's definitely an experience I'd encourage anyone interested in it to do.

“Best experience I've ever had. ”

★★★★★

written by AlysonYoung on 09/07/2014

It was an amazing experience from start to finish, there may have been some hiccups along the way but I beilive these are all part of the Ghana experience. for example having to wait for another van for a couple of hours in the hot sun was a issue, but it tests everybody's patience and tests how you handle situations which you may not normally be in. So carry on making hiccups, it's all part of the fun.

“the most overwhelming, amazing experience!”

★★★★★

written by kayleighjxxxx on 24/05/2014

Volunteering in Ghana with Thrive Africa was just absolutely amazing, it's the chance of a lifetime to go out their and help those who need it! I met some amazing people while over there, volunteers and staff, I would definitely consider going again it made me appreciate everything at home so much more seeing how little they have but never complained once, there wasn't one thing I didn't enjoy throughout my experience (apart from being ill) the journeys we're very long but with a good set of volunteers bus journeys aren't so bad, the excursions are definitely worth it to go to the safari and Cape Coast beach is a beautiful way to end the trip. Meeting the locals of Ghana and the children in the schools, orphans we met was overwhelming they never stopped smiling and it definitely puts a perspective on life :) the children loved seeing us there, all so welcoming and shown us their local dance. overall I cannot say a bad word about the whole trip, the staff, the projects, the excursions, the other volunteers, the locals, the children, it was all amazing and I would recommend it that any body goes if it's something you want to so then go for it you won't regret it!!

My experience with Thrive Africa has been terrible so far. I paid my fees on 5th November and have heard nothing from them. At the time when paying my fees I set up my volunteer log in, which I've tried to use without success. I'm becoming really concerned about using this company now, especially after making several attempts via email and telephone but no contact back at all. Has anyone else experienced this? Many thanks
