“Best experience ever!”

Having spent 2 weeks doing the medicine and Spanish project in Cordoba, Argentina, I can honestly say it was just amazing - there are no words to explain just how great the whole experience was. I was lucky enough to stay with a host family who were a grandmother, a mother and child. They were (and still are) the best! For me, this was a really big bonus as it made each day more interesting, we talked about politics, life and always ate together, making me feel at home and completely comfortable. I stayed with two other volunteers who have become friends for life and became my sisters, as did the other girls on my project - people I would never have met if we all hadn't been doing Projects Abroad.
Each day had the same basic structure: the mornings were a medicine based activity, the afternoons were Spanish lessons and then every other day we'd have a social activity. However, each day was completely different. Most days we'd get up at around 7am, eat breakfast, and be picked up by our co-coordinator and taken to a hospital. There, we'd be assigned different wards each day, and many days we saw surgery! My favourite day was the day when I got to see a c-section, the doctor let me dress the baby, which was almost unbelievable seeings as the baby had been born a mere few minutes before! We saw neurosurgery, the neonatal ward, skin grafts, cardiology and many other departments. One day we had a diabetes workshop where we interacted with patients, taking their blood pressure and glucose levels. Another day we went to the anatomy museum were we were lucky enough to see, and touch, a cadaver! Even though my Spanish isn't brilliant, the doctors were happy to speak slowly when explaining things to me, and my coordinator translated for me if I got really stuck and whilst they were talking very quickly!
We then went home for lunch with our host families.
The afternoons involved us taking a bus (with our coordinator) to Projects' HQ where we had our Spanish lessons. We learnt about Che Guevara, Argentinian culture and greatly improved our Spanish by talking about the day's activities. Some days we did other activities such as go shopping with a task to do or one day we watched a film about Che's life.
We would then go home, have dinner, and prepare for evening activities such as football, Salsa classes and sometimes evening meals. Sometimes these activities didn't end until 11pm as this is normal in Argentina. I was lucky enough to have a coordinator who would go the extra mile and take us bowling or for ice cream when we didn't have planned activities. We didn't want to waste a minute!
As my two weeks went on the late nights and early mornings meant sleep was little, but every morning I woke excited for the day.
We were accompanied everywhere we went so we were safe at all times. My top tip would be that winter is cold, literally freezing, so take warm pyjamas and jumpers as houses don't have central heating.
I would 1000% recommend Projects Abroad, the care they provided for us was truly outstanding, and I enjoyed myself immensely, further making me want to be a doctor.
